One thing that has always intrigued me about Liara's character, specifically her vast intellect, is her ability to memorise and recall an abundance of factual information. For example, if Noveria is saved until after Virmire, Liara will reveal that she is fully aware of the situation regarding the Mu Relay, and the reasons as to why it has been lost for thousands of years. She will spontaneously reveal this information in the Virmire debriefing, similar to how Benezia will do so when she temporarily breaks free of Sovereign's indoctrination on Noveria.
This is but one example of Liara's amazing intelligence, however. I mean, consider the manner in which she is able to successfully deduce the facts concerning the Shadow Broker's past through mere knowledge of his species...
This is a really good point. I think Liara has something close to a photographic memory; some people just have a natural gift of perfect or nearly perfect recall, and it seems Liara has this (perhaps inherited from her mother, which might be a big part in Benezia's revered status among all asari). She's not quite Sherlock Holmes, since Holmes was a consummate observer as well as retaining an almost encyclopedic knowledge base in that drug-hazed brain of his, but she may be the closest thing that the Mass Effect universe has.
We see this on Illium too, where she just pops off the information on Samara and Thane without having to so much as glance at her computer. Shepard even comments on this: "You just remembered all of that off the top of your head?" "I'm a very good information broker, Shepard."

You don't think so? Consider the manner in which Liara is able to (correctly) extrapolate that galactic extinction occurs in cycles via the mere study of ancient Prothean ruins, and her aforementioned ability to deduce the Shadow Broker's past within a couple of minutes, via knowledge of his species and a cursory glance at the interior of the Shadow Broker Base.
I think that Liara is more than able to observe and study presented data, and arrive at logical conclusions via calling upon the vast amounts of knowledge and information that she has memorised. In a sense, I think Liara possesses vast intelligence in two differing ways: her ability to retain an encyclopedic-esque knowledge base, and the fact that she's capable of using said knowledge to analyse and study limited data, and produce logical hypotheses as a result.

It's indeed quite remarkable, Nate. One of the reasons I appreciate Liara's character so much. Blowing up people and sex isn't everything she knows or thinks about.
Absolutely!
It's quite amazingly fun to analyse and study characters that I genuinely care about, of which Liara is obviously amongst them.

Hélas, BioWare doesn't believe people want to play aliens.

They don't...it seems most want to play as themselves in RPGs...which defeats the whole purpose of 'role-playing' IMO but whatever.

Though doing so in a prequel would be... tricky.

I'd argue that making logical connections between known data points is a different skill than identifying small cues and making connections via observation. It's a small distinction, but one relates to intuition and the other to visual acuity and training oneself to see certain things.

I think that Liara could star in some form of prequel to the Mass Effect trilogy, in which she is the playable character in a game loosely inspired by Tomb Raider. As an archaeologist, Liara would explore remote Prothean digsites in an attempt to acquire and recover various clues regarding the Prothean extinction, in addition to valuable artifacts. The gameplay would consist of extensive puzzle-solving, with the occasional combat interlude against small bands of mercenaries or privateers.
I'd most certainly buy it!
I've wanted to see some Liara Croft: Tomb Raider fanart for a while now!
That, or Indiana T'Soni... Not sure which would be cooler.

Why is this? Would you not be interested in a spin-off prequel which stars Liara as the lead protagonist and playable character? Especially if the genre differs from that of the main trilogy's action RPG gameplay? If said game were to be executed properly, it could actually expand upon Liara's backstory quite effectively, and provide exposition on some of the expeditions that Liara had embarked upon prior to the events of ME1.
The thought of experiencing Liara's adventures whilst exploring remote Prothean digsites and ruins is something that deeply interests me, to be honest!

Okay, I now fully understand your argument, Sable, and I do agree with what you're saying.
Regardless, Liara is flipping brainy, and her vast intellect is something that my Shepard finds admirable and, to a certain extent, intimidating. Essentially, Liara is a genius!

Let's say ME3 will finally have squad banter, and Liara, Garrus, VS, and Tali are recruitable. What do you think the discussions they'd have with each other? Like what would Garrus and Liara talk about? What would Tali and Liara talk about? What would Ash and Liara talk about? etc.
The Reapers.
Though, when you think about it, Liara probably has some mad amounts of 'dirt' on each of these people, though I doubt she'd bring it up in civil conversation.
"Hey Garrus, how's your mother doing?"

Aside from the inevitability of them reminiscing about old times, I'd like to imagine that they'd attempt to take stock of how their respective lives have developed and changed since they first met during the events of ME1, and how time and, to a certain degree, Shepard herself has shaped them into the people that they currently are.
Imagine if Liara and Ashley were to enjoy a discussion about the former's current work as the Shadow Broker, and how her new career differs from her previous employment as an archaeologist. Ashley could respond with some form of opinion regarding Liara's new role in the galaxy, and how she would have never suspected that Liara would take control of such a vast and influential organisation.
The potential is quite astounding, considering the fact that these characters have been present across the entire trilogy, and are able to recount countless experiences.

The conversation would be different depending on what you did in your playthroughs, a sort of recap of everything that has happened. The highs, the lows, the strange moments and the funny ones. What bothered each individual character and what made them happy.
To hear Liara... or anyone really say what made them feel terrible and what made them feel great would be amazing. I'd love to hear what Mordin thinks about helping all those people, what his "biography will say."
End with a toast to Shepard or something, the one that drags them through the good and the bad.

Considering the fact that ME3 is the end of Commander Shepard's story, it would be quite awesome if said scene were to occur during the epilogue of that game. Especially if Liara is a notable absentee, and it is revealed that she is standing at Shepard's side as her lover and bondmate, with the pair of them looking to the future in the aftermath of the attempted Reaper invasion.

I think post ME3 Shep/Liara should involve returning to Ilos, the spot on the picture in her apartment.
You think that, post-ME3, when Liara has a future of her own to think about, that she'd continue to look to the past the way that she used to?

Ah! That's a neat idea. She'd try to ask personal questions without giving away that she knows more then she claims. But I'd imagine they'd also try to joke around, probably about past events. Garrus asking questions about when to keep fighting the impossible, and when to call it quits. Or Tali and Liara discussing how they've both lost parents, and yet try to remember and respect them.

I would empty my bank account for a
DLC/scene/anything that had some of the original squad members and a few
of the new ones just sitting around yakking about Shepard and all

This would be so awesome. I would go with Liara and Mordin everywhere just to hear them interact.

After learning about what happened to the protheans, and what they became I imagine it would be a nice summary of how the galaxy almost became like Ilos. Empty, hallow and stripped of it's potential as a beautiful civilization.
Plus given the momentos, artifacts and paintings in Liara's apartment I'd guess the past still holds a tight grip on her interest, even if her position as the SB keeps her looking forward.
