Unfortunately the bugs related to romance mean you'll pretty much still get romance trapped whatever you say (Never managed to avoid the Liara vs Ashley or Liara vs Kaidan scene even though I always told the human I liked Liara)

Ahh well, the "I feel bad for him/her, but I'm glad you chose me" is one of the sweetest of Liara's lines in ME1 imo

How do you do that? I have never been able to get the "pick one" scenes despite trying each and everytime I replay ME1. lol

I had to actually work to get that scene, I never knew it was even possible till I saw it on youtube :)

Essentially you have to flirt with both, and when the human brings up the other you have to shy away from an answer without being harsh. Same with Liara, then it'll pop up eventually.

Naturally I always pick the sweetest options when talking to Liara but when I talk to ashley/kaidan I always clearly let them know I'm not interested in a romance, without being a jerk (aka choosing a really harsh renegade option). Only time I've ever missed the choosing scene is on my very first playthrough. Back then I did Feros before Therum and Ashley died on Virmire (So there were no longer two people to choose from)

On my latest (femshep) playthrough I chose two neutral options when talking to kaidan just after Eden Prime. I'm wondering if that'll change anything.

I also pick the sweet options with Liara... However, when I started playing ME1, I was going to go Renegade, so I made my Shepard look angry all the time (angry-looking eye brows)... When I decided to go Paragon, it looks so funny when Shepard says nice things and smiles, because his eye brows are saying "F**k You!"... Lol, it's sort of half happy, half pissed off :P

I've recently been playing through, and absolutely adoring, Dragon Age: Origins, and I thought it quite noteworthy that Leliana will mention that she is in love with the Warden. In actuality, I thought it was an absolutely beautiful piece of dialogue!

Do you think that Liara will ever openly declare that she is in love with Shepard? Do you share my belief that the writers are perhaps waiting for the epic romance conclusion in ME3 before doing so, as it will therefore possess a lot more emotional impact? Any thoughts?

I do think that it's quite interesting to note that Liara has not used the term "love" yet, and that the potential exists for it's eventual utterance to be amazingly resonating on an emotional level. I can't wait!

It is curious that she hasn't used that word.  I guess they didn't want to use it in ME1 since it would have felt rushed?  But doesn't Miranda (of all people!) mention love in ME2?  I hope that the romances will be allowed to be fully realized in ME3 (Proposal?  Bondmate ceremony?  Little blue baby sonogram?  EEEEE!!!)  I think you're right in that waiting until after ME3, when the threat of the reapers is finally over and they can focus on living their lives - and therefore their love - makes a lot of sense.

Ultimately, though, my headcanon already has all of this anyway.  Seeing it in beautifully rendered graphics will just be icing on a delicious (blue-frosted) cake!

She does saw something along the lines of "is this what it's like to be in love?" (or something equally groan-worthy) in ME1.
While I hope she's a squaddie, I think the writers have their work cut out for them in that regard. There are a ton of returning characters; they can't all be squadmates. In her favor, Liara's the best biotic and introducing another is redundant. Plus Feron can do the job on the ship - it would be hard to come up with a believable storyline justification for her to read reports on a ship while her lover is saving all of existence while Feron is around.

Liara will undoubtedly be very important though - and perhaps the Shadow Broker's ship becomes your hub, which means she'll be talking to you constantly anyway.

I'm still leaning towards the idea that for a majority of ME2, she's going to be the main "quest-giver" from the Shadow Broker's ship on Hagalaz. Then, some ****'s gonna go down, the Broker's ship is gonna get destroyed, and she'll become a squadmate for the remainder of the story.

You know, that makes me thing. I wonder if BioWare is going to do a 'Normandy SR2' with the Shadow Broker ship.

On one hand, that could be a major role change for the Shadow Broker. However, on the other hand, I don't think Liara has the ability to rebuild the shadow broker's actual network. Maybe part of ME3 would be rebuilding the shadow broker network after an attack.

I'm more of wondering who's going to say "I love you" first.

Amazingly, I have been thinking the same thing (Also adore Leliana in DAO). Especially the "You are my leader and my friend, and sometimes I think that m-maybe, we can be more than that" part. Then it ocurred to me that Liara never actually said she loved Shepard. While it's not THAT important for her to say it, as everyone knows how Liara feels towards Shepard, it would be nice (and a great scene) to hear Liara say the 3 words.

On the escapist there is a show called "Extra credits" where some people talk about video games in general. The latest talk they had was about "True female characters". They show Liara quickly for a few seconds when the narrator talks about "There is as much depth to be found in understanding why a character agrees or  follows gender norms from there society, as there is in finding out why they reject them.".

Thoughts or comments on this?

Link.

Over over?  Or "I've finally gotten Shepard's body back" over?

'Tis a bittersweet ending, either way!

In ME1, in the ward, there is a special spot where you can get a cinematic with Kaidan and Ashley. In there, Shepard will say that humanity have this thing called love while "listing" things that humanity is bringing to the galatic community. Sounded like other species don't have that concept or something.

Might explain why Liara haven't said it, it's just not something Asari do. Also, Asari have no problem sharing their feeling with their telepatic powers, which actually make the "saying" more powerful...but crap for the player.

If it's going to happen, it's going to happen in ME3. ME1 occurs over a month, as I recall. It would have been too rushed to have her say it then. LoTSB is something similar. Sure, Liara/Shepard are back together, but just barely. After all of the crazy stuff that has happened (shepard being dead for two years, liara taking over as shadow broker), it would seem like liara/shepard need some time just to figure out what the hell is going on. I think that the intermission between me2/me3 (in-universe) is going to be used for that (or at least we can assume that's what they did).

Liara regaining squadmate status is something that I'm not particularly bothered about, to be honest. What concerns me the most is that her character, and the romance by logical extension, receives the attention, development, screentime and recognition that it deserves.

I wouldn't want her to be a squadmate if it were detrimental to the writing of her character, and the possible story role that she might possess in ME3. Ultimately, the wellbeing of her character takes precedence.

Ya. Getting to play Liara in LoTSB was fun, but the combat wasn't my favorite part of LoTSB (not saying that in a bad way, although that last fight before you go inside the SB ship was a huge pain in the ass, on insanity). The best part was getting Liara's character squared away. If we have a LoTSB style mission with Liara, then that would be nice, but ultimately, I'm just hoping we get more good Liara writing. If they bring back whoever wrote LoTSB then i think we are in very good shape.

Yay! I'll complete it then, I was waiting...you know, is a shame when you start reading a great FanFic and you end in the middle of the story, because the author's still on it (*cough* looking at you, End of the Beginning *cough*).

I'll let you know when I finish it!

Shepard saying "beautiful women, this emotion called love" is immediately followed by "according to the old vids..."  She's being satirical by listing stuff that 50's style science fiction often showed aliens as wanting to invade Earth to get, but that the real aliens already have, from their perspective.

I'm quite sure that the other races of the galaxy are very familiar with love, even though I can't recall the word ever being said aloud in either Mass Effect.

I hope Liara uses it in 3.

Hey guyszzz. Sorry, it's been a while. But! I have a new (actually, we've done this before) topic for us!

I'm replaying ME1 right now, and I want to do things differently than my normal game.

What order should I play the planets? I got Liara first (for me, that's not an option, haha). I usually do Noveria next, but I wanted to know what the best course was in regards to a relationship with Liara.

Thoughts?

I usually go...

1. Therum (recruit Liara)
2. Noveria
3. Feros
4. Virmire

I do about half the side missions between Noveria and Feros, and the rest after Feros but before Virmire.
