Regardless of gender, I see it as Shepard who proposes. Liara needs assurances that Shepard is coming back, and what better assurance than the promise of a wedding?

This, pretty much.  Although it would be interesting (and quite touching) to see Liara propose.

I"d seriously fall off my chair if that happened.

Liara: Shepard, there's...something I've been meaning to ask you
Shepard: What about?
Liara: About us Shepard...
Shepard: Is something bothering you?
Liara: You know how we talked about this before... in your cabin..
Shepard: You don't mean you...
Liara: I do. Shepard, will you marry me?

*Gasps*
*Falls off chair*
*Wakes up 30 minutes later*

You kept her waiting for an answer for thirty minutes?! Shame on you! Shame! ;)

I think that by now, the characters of mass effect are used to having Shepard stare at them before giving them an answer. Kind of like how Ash, Kaiden, the Geth, and Saren all patiently wait on Virmire. Even though you only have time to save one, you have all the time you need to choose which one.

Permanent bondmate could be an interesting part of the ending. I think it could fit with the guardedly optimistic (well, at least that's how the paragon path plays out). I figure that me3 is going to be hell for shepard/liara. Earth is burning, and I expect Thessia will be in trouble, too. But it was never easy. Benezia. Shepard dying. The Shadow Broker.

My favorite thing about Liara's romance path is that she and Shepard are equals. By that, I mean Liara (at least, as of late) hasn't just been cooing over how great the player character is (although the ME1 opening to the romance "actually, I believe we were talking about my interest in you" does tend to bother me, because the romance arc gets in the way of her character). Shepard's dialogue indicates that Shepard has respect for Liara. LoTSB has cemented this equality, I think. Shepard and Liara hasn't always worked out perfectly. I like how LoTSB wasn't an instant payoff. But Shepard isn't looking at Liara just as another NPC. The relationship between them (even if she isn't romanced) is really, really well done. I like how at the beginning of LoTSB -- Liara is the one who storms in and rescues Shepard and co. I think that makes up for the damsel in distress meeting on Therum (which really, really bothers me).

I don't think Liara is going to be that nervous anymore, their love has been reconciled and is stronger than ever after LoTSB if you go that route. I think Liara would know better than to ask until after they were both done 'being big goddamn heroes' as Zaeed likes to say.

I also (in my headcanon anyways) don't see either of them needing to ask the other, I think it's just a given should they make it to the end.

Someone always has to ask, trust me. My wife and I had been planning out our lives together, including children, and I still had to propose.

For everyones sake I hope Mass Effect III really pulls it all off. We all want to see a good show for Liara and Shepard's LI, guess we find out this December lol. As far off as it is I remember waiting for Mass Effect II and just as long of a wait. Came fast.. hope this feels the same. This is the last of the trilogy games on my list to finish, and its my top favorite. Would like to finally finish the list and most importantly see Liara and Shepard make it out alive and get married in the end of ME III.

I'd love Liara to propose but what about the rejection dialogue?
It'd hurt to listen to.

I wouldn't mind a cutscene for that, only if you have been faithful the whole time!

There won't be a rejection dialogue:pinched:

Liara: Shepard, will you marry me?

Dialogue wheel text:

Yes! (As in "I thought you'd never ask")
Are you sure?                           I will (Neutral - Shepard just answers the question)
Of course (As in "Finally, I was afraid I'd ended up proposing you")

Safe to say if it turns out Liara would only propose if you stayed 100% faithfull to her (EG reaffirmed romance in Lotsb and no other LI in ME2) there wouldn't be anyone who'd actually reject Liara at this point. Plus that would be a great kind of 'bonus' for those who stayed 100% faithfull. (Like me! :wizard:)

I would like to have Liara propose with a lot of nervous stammer and eye twitching.
And Shepard doesn't know what she is trying to say, that would be so adorable. Posted Image

Add a Joker interrupt at the moment she get the words right

Now that would be something to see. Although 'nervous liara' was thrown out the window (or.. shot out an airlock) in ME2. I rather doubt she'll make her reappearance now. But that would be great. As for joker interrupt, as long as he doesn't completely kill the mood and mess up the romantic moment like he did in ME1 (Darn you Joker! Darn you!) that would be awesome.

I don't know, if you propose to someone you love, wouldn't you be a nervous wreck?
I would totally freak out and stammer! I'm an idiot when I'm in love, it's embarrassing.  ^_^

I wouldn't know since I'm not married (and not planning to for years to come) but asking a (in my case, girl) out on a first date seems to make you closer to being a nervous wreck than proposing for marriage. With proposing you've already been with that person for quite a while (well you should) and so the question should come a lot easier.

In Liara's case, I doubt she'd still be nervous around Shepard after all that's happend.

Speaking about nerves: Has anyone ever paid good attention to Liara's expression while Shepard is staring down a krogan battlemaster on Therum. Liara's really afraid of being dragged off to saren and there comes the human, just standing in between her and a krogan battlemaster (which are pretty much feared throughout the galaxy) and just staring him down. While Liara's face says something like: No way, is he/she really willing to fight that krogan to protect me?

Great moment :)

You know, I've seen this sort of thing before.  "Damsel in distress" bothers people as a plot device.  Unfortunately for those that feel that way, no matter how much society attempts to emasculate men, rescuing the damsel in distress is written into our genetic code.  We will always be that way.  And since ~99% of gamers are male....well, you can figure that out.

Yeah, I noticed that on Therum.  I'm sure I enhanced the effect when I chose the renegade conversation option which was something like...

"We don't have time for this idiot!  Kill him!"

So, not only did I fight and defeat him, I made sure to utterly and forcefully disrespect him before doing so.

Honestly, 'rescuing' Liara didn't bother me that much. She got herself trapped in what I felt was an endearingly klutzy manner, which befits her character when we first meet her. As for 'saving' her, well, we 'save' damn near every member of the crew at one point or another. Tali in the Wards (and again on Haestrom), Garrus on Omega, Ashley on Eden Prime. Not every recruitment mission can be as easy and straight-forward as Zaeed's.

I agree on "endearingly klutzy".  I also agree on everyone needing saving at some point.  I guess Samara didn't need saving as much as she just needed assistance.  Thane didn't need much help nor did Kasumi.  Pretty much everyone else gets their ass in a crack at some point.

Back to endearingly klutzy.....it was amazing the way they wrote Liara's character from "nervous librarian" in ME1 into "wise but young woman who's way tougher than she looks, but still the same sweetie" in ME2.

That change was really brought home when she leaped out that window and started chasing full bore after a Spectre.  I was cheering her on while I was picking broken glass out of my hair

Yeah I hear broken glass in your hair can be unpleasant.
I pretty much applauded her (Liara's) courage at that moment. If vasir would've stopped running and fought her 1 on 1, there's no way Liara would've won.

But Liara wouldn't have been alone.  Shepard's M-98 Widow would have some say in this.

Vasir wasn't running because of Liara, Vasir was running because if Liara caught her it'd tie Vasir up long enough for Shephard and the two heavily armed individuals s/he was with to unleash firepower on her.

As far as that arc goes I REALLY enjoyed when Vasir would charge off, to charge back into Vasir. I was literally talking to the computer going 'Yeah, I can do that too ****!' funny.

True. But all characters execpt for Liara demonstrate some level of competence even when they get ambushed, trapped etc.

-Ashley ready her weapon and prepares for a last stand.
-Tali throws a grenade and kills a few badguys when she realises the deal in the wards is a trap.
-Jack just met a dead-end.
- Garrus was also preparing for a last stand in ME2.

I could list more. But my point is Liara is perhaps the only character who truly ever had a "damsel in distress" (emphasis on distress), first impression are important and Liara sorta gave the feeling of being completely helpless on her own. The fainting sure as hell did not help.

yeah :?.... I think when she faints after mind-melding to learn about the Virmire beacon is one of the few times where I simply tell her to shut up.
