However, I think that Liara doing work on constructing an actual electronic/bioweapon to use against the reapers is pushing the suspension of disbelief. She's a Prothean expert, not an engineer. I think that BioWare has set her up to make some major discovery of a Prothean device.
Wow I never even thought of that...that would actually be an awesome way to win the war! I posted on a different forum how I thought killing ALL the reapers would require a virus because you can't exactly go to each reaper and kill them off... That would be awesome though -- your idea I mean.
Liara was one of my least favorites in mass effect 1. Because mass effect 1 was a relatively short game (if you don't spend HOURS upon HOURS going to the different planets and driving in a friggin mako), I felt like you got liara relatively late in the game. Plus she kept doing that mind meld thing which, after the 4th time, gets incredibly annoying to see the same images over and over again.
but it all changed in mass effect 2 when I downloaded LotSB...AMAZING. THAT was the liara I wanted to see. She's gotten tough! And she's gotten more...street smarts (is that it?). she was always smart -- but now she's aware of everyone. I really hope they bring her into ME3 as a squadmate. She would be amazing.
*minor spoiler* In case you didnt download LotSB
I loved when she beat up the 2 guards and kept on running after the spectre! shes gotten strong!

Don't worry, basically all the regulars in this thread have LoTSB (it's effectively 'required reading' for the Liara fanbase).
Right after the shadow broker boss fight, Liara is discussing what intel the shadow broker has. He knew that the collectors were protheans. Liara has a line to the effect of 'he was looking for something else out there'. I think that 'something' is going to be some kind of Prothean device. I'm hoping that it's not a lost superweapon. I liked how the Conduit wasn't a total deus ex machina. It was a tool that Shepard had to use to beat saren, but it wasn't an instant victory over the bad guys.

I've
started writing a fanfic of my own. A few weeks ago, we discussed
Liara's backstory--or lack thereof. I've gotten a couple pages into a
fanfic about Liara's backstory. Just finished the opening, which is an
argument between Benezia/Liara right before Liara is enrolling in the
University of Serrice Ph.D. program. This is actually pretty fun to
write. I'm hoping that this piece will be a fun what-if that can shed
some light on what circumstances gave us the Dr. Liara T'Soni we all
know and love.
All I can say is that is a fantastic idea! I hope I get to read it ../../../images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png
It's coming along fairly well. I'm focusing on Liara's time in grad school (overlapping into her post-doc years). I want to focus on Liara's decision to become an archeologist. This will include discussions/conflict with Benezia, Liara in school, and her first research dig. I'm debating whether to end with an epilogue set before she travels to Therum.
I want to focus on several things: I'd like to discuss her relationship with Benezia. We've seen the Benezia's fall from grace in ME1. I'd like to show her before that fall. I'm trying to show Benezia (from Liara's perspective) as a basically good person, who cares about Liara. However, Benezia is conflicted about her role as a Matriarch and her role as Liara's mother, with the central conflict between the two being Benezia's dislike for Liara finding her own path. Other themes are going to be Liara's relationships (or lack thereof) for several reasons. First is her struggle being a pureblood. I'd also like to expand upon what Matriarch Aeythia says in ME2, about how the Asari youth are busy screwing around, that they're not getting anything done as a species. The final major theme is going to be the role of Prothean history in modern galatic society. I'm basing the Benezia/Liara conflict on Benezia chastizing Liara for looking to the past and ignoring the problems that current society faces. Liara believes that since modern galactic society is based upon Prothean developments (or so they think), that it is necessary to understand how their culture utilized the mass relays and the Citadel.
Right now I'm working on the Benezia/Liara dialogue. Trying to get the 'voices' of the characters perfect has been the hardest part so far. I'm interested in how other fanfic has handled this, but I haven't read any other fanfic yet (I don't want to steal plot points from other writers). Also, Shepard is not going to be in this story. At all. There is a lot of good Liara/Shepard writing out there, but I want to have a story that focuses just on Liara, so that I can get a better idea of who she really is. Plus, Liara's backstory isn't likely to be expanded upon in ME3, so it's not like I have to worry about canon overriding my story.
