As for what Liara has studied, all we know is that her interests lie with the Prothean extinction question. It's possible that she was familiar with their industry but I don't think this was her sole focus. It seems as if her Ph.D. work and subsequent papers focused on developing a theory that would explain the sudden disappearance of such an advanced race as the Protheans. Thus, I think she studied anything in regards to the Prothean pre-extinction era....industry would be one part of that.
Also, I believe Therum was a human mining colony and it appears the miners found an old Prothean substructure within one of the mines and then Liara's archaeological team investigated. Therum is actually littered with Prothan ruins, according to the codex. Now I wonder why a team headed by an asari was given rights to study them? Unless they've already been picked over by human lead teams...I don't know.
Liara's ultimate goal is to figure out what happened to the Protheans. However, to do that, she's got to try and find the ruins first. Also, in order to understand why they went extinct, Liara will need at least some background information on how Prothean society is organized.
Searching for Prothean industry is a method to systematically search for Prothean ruins. The pollution produced by eezo production is a quick way to detect whether Protheans have developed the area. Industry is capital intensive enough that there would be mining companies and government regulators on-site, so that would give her leads to follow to find more clues about what happened.
The mining rights to Therum are currently owned by human investors. However, they don't necessarily own the whole planet - mining rights only cover the area of the actual mineral deposit. It's likely that the Prothean ruins were not included in the concessions, because of scholarly interest, and because old ruins would be a pain to deal with - structurally unstable, potential hazmats laying around after 50,000 years of neglect.
I'm not trying to force this theory down anyone's throat. I think that her first place to look would be industry for two reasons: the facilities would be in communication with major government and corporate interests. Furthermore (this is the really big part) if Liara can recover the highly advanced Prothean eezo refining processes (remember, they think the Protheans built the mass relays, they would need immense amounts of eezo to do so), that would be a major win for the Asari economy. Liara needs grant money to do this research, and the easiest way to get that is to say 'well, we can recover this eezo tech which will make the Asari economy more efficient'. As a matter of fact, one of the major disagreements (that I'm writing) between Liara and Benezia has to do with funding for a major survey of potential eezo refineries.
I see Liara as doing all of her own analysis. However, she can't do everything alone. For instance, she'll need to outsource analysis of Prothean computer equipment. I envision Liara discovering some electronics, then having them sent out so they can be analyzed by electronics experts. By the same token, if she's looking for contamination from eezo activities, she would outsource that to a lab equipped with spectrophotometers, and a nuclear reactor (for neutron activation analysis).
