I think that most of the Liara fanbase has accepted Aethyta as Liara's 'father'.

True. The latest GI Q/A article also says BioWare did notice the attention Aethyta was receiving as Liara's 'father' and they were thinking about giving Aethyta a larger role in ME3. Truthfully I think that was always the case as she's just got too much dialogue for an npc that's just not important for ME2's story. But a real family reunion with a "I am your father" a la Darth Vader would probably be too much. Not to mention Liara could probably find this information in the shadow broker's archives.

Also, wouldn't that mean Benezia has been a Matriarch before Liara was born? Can they still produce off-spring at that stage of their life? Could the Matriarch be her "grandmother" (for lack of a better word) .. then who is Liara's mother?

The 3 asari stages only seem to affect Asari wants and needs (for lack of a better word). Asari seem to be legally adult at the age of 60, liara mentions she's 106 and 'barely more than a child' which is because 40 - 50 years are neglectable in an Asari life. At no time is ever mentioned only matrons can have children, it is just that in this stage an asari feels the greatest compulsion to start up a family. So I think there's a strong possibility a matriarch can still have children, as can a maiden. Possibly as early as the age of 60 or before.

I like this explanation of things, except that the codex explicitly states that asari cannot reproduce until their 'matron' stage of life, which can be brought on early through repeated meldings, and is the subject of a short fic I'm writing, so I'm a teensy bit invested in that remaining canon!  ;)

Primary codex about asari: "When the Matron stage begins, they "meld" with interesting partners to produce their offspring. This ends when they reach the Matriarch stage, where they assume the roles of leaders and councilors"

Secondary codex about asari biology: "The Matron stage of life begins around the age of 350, though it can be triggered earlier if the individual melds frequently. This period is marked by a desire to settle in one area and raise children. The Matriarch stage begins around 700, or earlier if the individual melds rarely."

At no point is it explicitly stated that a maiden or matriarch cannot have children. However, I agree the the secondary codex about asari biology hints at the fact that asari are only fertile once they hit the matron stage, starting at the age of 350 or after repeated melding ending around the age of 700. But like I said, it's never explicitely stated that a maiden cannot have children. And if it turns out it actually is so...well, then Shepard and Liara have got a lot of work to do moving Liara's matron stage down a few 100 years:P

I'm sure they won't mind the activity involved with striving for that goal. ;)

It is pretty vague on the matter though. I never really figured that it'd be impossible to have children outside the matron stage. It really depends on what exact physical changes they go through during each change in stage.

The codex only states the asari goes through different stages of thinking if you will. They are restless and curious in the maiden stage, want to settle down in the matron stage and prefer to act as advisors and consulars in the matron stage. I'd consider it a strong possibility BioWare wrote the codex so as to not limit their possibilities in future games. Would be strange to write something in the codex about something being impossible, then wanting to do that exact same thing in a later game, only to find out that it's impossible. That's the only real reason I can think of why the codex is so vague at certain points.

Bioware clearly meant for Liara to be the flagship "female" lead for this franchise.

Story-wise, yes. But so far, the more conventional female characters have been featured in promotional material.

I'm hoping they did that to explain the changes in the Kaiden and Ashley models rather than because they're going to have a larger role in ME3 than Liara. Not sure what is happening to Miranda...

Makes more sense to promote humans.

Right now she's the only squaddie who's guaranteed to be in ME3, so unless it features Shep and two new characters (or non-squaddies), I imagine we'll see our blue rose getting some cover time!

Right, but I meant the only one who can make it onto cover art.  I'm stoked that Ash is gonna be back (even though I'm not a big fan of her 'beautification'), and want to see some squaddie banter between her and Liara!

How do you think the VS will react when they find out Liara is the head of the most powerful information network in the galaxy?

The VS misunderstands the Shadow Broker as being Liara all along and storms off. Just like Horizon. Good way to get rid of a character, eh?

Seriously though, most probably they would consider her an asset. The Shadow Broker is a very powerful entity, her connections would prove pivotal in mobilising the galaxy to defend itself against the Reapers.

Anyways, do you think there will be any chance of Dr. T'Soni returning in ME3? I really wanted to converse more with her about the Protheans. Their architecture, why they were the only space-faring species during their time, did they absorb other species into their own, etc. etc. An opportunity wasted :(

With either Ash or Kaiden I think there'd be some tension over the SB business. Ash and Kaiden were really straightlaced and probably not happy with the double dealing and Ash never really liked Liara anyway. I'm more interested in a possible double cross from Miranda.

I hope in ME3 all the different races get a lot more backstory and get really fleshed out but the imminent Reaper threat might veto that. For some reason I really want to see a femal Salarian, just to see how they talk etc. But the opportunity to talk to Liara about her culture and upbringing would be absolutely fantastic!

Having Liara and Shepard on the ME3 cover would be amazing. The ultimate Liara tribute :)

I wouldn't even tell the others who Liara actually is. Nobody needs to know Liara is the new shadow broker. So unless you actually want to put her in more danger (I imagine the old shadow broker has made some more enemies beside Liara) it would be better to actually keep that information to yourself, and make sure the Normandy SR-2 crew does the same. That just leaves TIM...

If you're wondering if she'll make a return in ME3 then yes, she's a confirmed (at least temporary) squadmember in ME3. And there's a chance we're going to be able to talk to her about the protheans again (though I'd rather talk about other things..) because the answer to stopping the reapers MAY lie in undiscovered prothean technology (Hinted at in Lotsb) If so then Liara would definately be a part of it and I think we'll get to see her prothean scientist side again.

I doubt we'll see Liara talking about the Protheans much in ME3, even though I'd love to hear her archaeology-speak.  The Prothean story is likely to take a back seat now that the Reapers are here. However, I do hope they introduce some Prothean relic as a key to defeating the Reapers in some way, even if it's just to have Liara get all excitable over it. >.>

Liara on the cover art would be great. What would be better, in my opinion, would be a variation with FemShep on it though. Now, a version with FemShep and Liara would fulfill all my hopes for the cover art! :D

Seeing as Liara stated the previous shadow broker thought the protheans had more things to use against the reapers, I'd be surprised if they didn't do anything with it in ME3.

In general, I agree with you.  I just had this great image in my head of Ash and Shepard walking through the Normandy to the communication room after escaping Earth ('cause you KNOW the VS is gonna be the first squaddie).

Ash: Where are we going?
Shepard: We need to talk to someone who has a better idea of where to go next.
Ash: Who's that?
Shepard: The Shadow Broker
Ash (pauses): Are you kidding me, skipper?
Shepard (gesturing): Come on in, I'll introduce you.
*Holographic scanner slides up around the two of them as the quantum entanglement communicator launches*
Shepard: Ash...  meet the Shadow Broker
*Liara's projection appears*
Liara: It's good to see you again Chief Williams
Ash: Bwah?

Too bad ash is dead in my canon play-through, you think Kaiden will say the same thing if it did happen?

Let me just fix that for you

Ash: Where are we going?
Shepard: We need to talk to someone who has a better idea of where to go next.
Ash: Who's that?
Shepard: The Shadow Broker
Ash (pauses): Are you kidding me, skipper?
Shepard (gesturing): Come on in, I'll introduce you.

Liara: It's good to see you again Chief Williams
Liara: Hey Shepard, good to see you. And hello to you too Chief Williams.
Ash: Bwah?

Can't have Liara greeting Ashley first, then Shepard 2nd.

You're right there, Rob!

@Eric: I'm sure he'd be pretty "Bwah?" about it too. ;)
