Also, when you bring Garrus and Tali for the Council choice, oddly Garrus is voicing to save the Council, and Tali is voicing for you to forget about them.

I once had a playthrough were both Garrus and Liara told me to let the council die. Actually, I think the only person who ever told be to save the council was Ash (and she wasn't Paragon).

Father Kyle was an insane murderer

True; however, Shepard is the leader of a special forces team assisting Alliance law enforcement here and not judge, jury and executioner.
Besides, the plan was to wait for one hour for Kyle to surrender. Kyle doesn't have anywhere to run, and they could just go in and get him if he fails to show up after one hour. Edit: At worst they have one hour to fortify their position.

I'm not sure what Liara says here since I usually take Ash (whose continuous second guessing of my decisions may be the reason I don't like her very much - as well as the helpful "I can't tell the aliens from the animals" comments while talking to various alien ambassadors)

Bolded - Ah, good point. The mission is handed to you by Hackett, of course. Though when I played, I saw myself as SpecTRe Shepard instead of SA Commander Shepard. Who IS, judge. jury and executioner.

Italicised - I am actually very confused here. On my first play through, Ash disagreed with me a lot, but the play throughs after that (when I got the hang of what I was doing) she agreed most of the time. Maybe because I played with Garrus first and then Wrex after? Most of the time one squaddie will always oppose, right?

That's odd, why would Liara shoot someone over a trained soldier? Kaiden would be more likely to do it, surely.

In my last play through I had Liara and Tali with me. Tali was the one to do the shooting.

Maybe because Kaiden is the "other" possible LI and Liara wants to prove she has the guts too? :P

On one of my games I took Kaiden & Liara everywhere and she was the devil to his angel. She said to destroy the rachni while he said save, she shot Saren, she questioned my decision of trusting father Kyle, etc. It was weird!

You must've seriously messed up your game then. As far as I know, Liara always favors saving the rachni queen. It also says so on her mass effect wikia page... I'll try taking Kaidan with me to noveria on my next playthrough (Liara is, of course, always with me) and see what happens.

think im gonna do a run with me1 now. havent played it since jan 2010. i have no playthroughs where i killed wrex. and dont recall liara playing the devil's advocate. not sure i wanna hear her act that way. kinda biased when it comes to her character (my version of her anyways).

Yeah it doesn't really fit Me1 Liara's character, having her play as the devil's advocate. ME2 or Lotsb Liara however...

What does she say, exactly? Father Kyle was an insane murderer. I actually agree with her.

Father Kyle explains that it would be better if Shep leaves Kyle with his children to explain why he is going, so Shep agrees that Kyle will have an hour before the Alliance comes to pick him up. Liara then says something like "I hope you know what you are doing." Or something along that line. I was used to Ash, Wrex, etc saying that in previous games but it just seemed wrong coming from Liara. Well, in LotSB it wouldn't but in ME1 it does.

I blame it on Kaiden. If my game has a glitch then that is cool too.

Was Garrus more paragon or renegade in your playthrough?
I have to play ME1 again with Kaidan and Liara, I need his achievment anyway.
Maybe I will finally kill the Rachni Queen

Huh
To each their own, I guess.
I don't see Liara as a goody-two-shoes who abhors killing and always favours the "light" path. None of them are.

Has there been any serious analysis of Liara's characterization, growth, and role in the Mass Effect series? Y'know, outside of fanboyish adoration.

The one who warns you about Father Kyle seems to be determined randomly, just like when you're on Virmire, just before you enter saren's base there's a console that lets you open the doors and sound an alarm and it's worked by wrex when you have tali, garrus or another character who seems to be more of the console hacking type in your party.

Liara has her darkness in my game play as well but that is not why it made me go "What?".

Why it seemed odd is because Shep has talked Father Kyle down from his ledge and all he (Kyle) asks is that you leave him with his children so he can explain why he is leaving with the Alliance. He tells you that if he goes with you now, his children (the biotics) won't understand and it will end in bloodshed. So Shep has two options, do you trust him or say hell no and guns start blazing. My Shep feels sorry for this former marine (a Major who served during the Siege of Torfan) suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The last thing she wants is to have to kill either this damaged man or his followers.

My Shep says that she will trust Father Kyle to do the right thing and Liara says something like "I hope you know what you are doing". I have always taken Liara with me and she never said that except the one time I brought Kaiden. I really thought he would say that line, but no - she did. She would have seen that Shepard was giving Kyle the same "benefit of the doubt" that she gives Liara throughout the game (ie, Noveria for starters). That and Liara always appears to trust Shepard's decisions so the comment just seemed out of nowhere. But she said it and my Shep didn't talk to her for a few days. My Shep isn't perfect either and has her moments of "don't talk to me".

Looks like we might be going back to Illium. Maybe Liara might narrate what life was like there during those 2 years. And Liara's father is probably still there.

Thanks! That was interesting. I am hoping that we go to Thessia in ME3.

Indeed, but I wouldn't get my hopes up of seeing ANY planet that's not in flames.

Honestly I'm more... curious I guess? About the "I am your father..." kind of plot twist. But of course we already know it. It's Matriarch Aethyta coming up to Liara, saying "Liara, I am your father"

I have my idea for the twist as well...

Here's a question: why doesn't Liara save Shepard from the trial? Or is that beyond her power?

Given that Shepard agreed in my game play to go when called it wouldn't seem right. While Liara might not be happy that Shepard is going to trial, to be honest that is probably the safest thing my Shep's ever done. "NO Shep, you can fight reapers, but go to court? No way! That Judge Judy is evil!" Posted Image

I have a theory on that: she is there to save Shepard, from himself if necessary. However, she'd rather you were found Not Guilty, so she's in the courtroom with some ME2 survivors (Garrus and Tali are at the top of my list on that score). If they win the case, great. If not, it's Big Damn Heroes time. Unfortunately for every single being alive, the Reapers show up first. (I'm really hoping the prosecutor shouts "THERE ARE NO REAPERS!" just before one of them blows the roof off. *eg*) Thus, Shepard, Liara, the VS and a handful of old friends are there to help Shepard get to the Normandy 2.1 before the Reapers get to him.

If I had the most powerful information network and didn't know who my father is, I would find out.
Liara is tougher now, but meeting her father for the first time and asking question what happened with Benezia, could be really difficult for her.

And to why Liara doesn't save Shepard.
My Shepard wouldn't want to be saved, she would want to explain what happened and take responsability.

And for those of us who can see the fact that the trial's verdict is a foregone conclusion? Seriously, you'd think she'd be able to do something.

You know, I was gonna say something to the effect of "She wouldn't want that, because it would mean Liara was abusing her power to help one person", but I was going to continue and say that I'd be okay with her helping Shepard to break out of prison afterward, and I realized how hypocritical that would be.

I guess I think there's some benefit to going to the trial and pleading her case; that she only did it because the Reapers arrival was imminent, and she had no other choice; that yes, she would have done it with any other system with any other race of inhabitants, and it would have hurt just as deeply.  Inevitably, though, she'd know that it was futile, that the batarians would believe what they wanted to believe, and the Alliance would be quick to throw her under the bus to avoid war, but she'd have to try.

THEN she'd accept help breaking out of prison.  But only after she gave it a shot.

It doesn't matter what Liara seems to say to me, I can't resist her suggestions. My RenShep ended up saving the Rachni queen because of Liara's dialogue even though I'd decided before playing I was going to try out all the options my Paragon hadn't gone for. Shepard is so whipped...

Exact same thing happens to me everytime and I have 3 Renegade Shepards. :P
