I never really paid attention to that before I read this post. Funny things is, I just finished Virmire on my latest playthrough and I did notice Rana Thanoptis (the asari scientist telling you about indoctrination) also had very shiny eyes.

When you said "ooh shiny" however, strangely enough all I could think of at the moment was Shale from DAO...

Shale and I share a weakness for shiny things.  ;)

I think they got the lighting right for Liara, but it's a bit distracting for Merrill. I think I missed some of her dialogue because I was too busy staring at her eyes. She is awfully cute though. Doesn't hold a candle to Liara, but still... >.>

Those eyes huh? Big innocent looking green eyes for Merrill and slightly smaller but still innocent looking blue eyes for Liara :)

Oddly enough, I didn't romance Merrill in my first play through (which I've only just finished) of DA2. I'd already decided to go for Isabella before I started playing. She's just more my type, I thought.

However, I'm not beginning to see a bit of a pattern. I felt bad for having to reject Merrill and so am going to play through again to romance her. What is it about the innocent characters that draw you in? I always used to find them mildly irritating. But Liara has changed that, I think. I see the potential for a vast amount of character development in them now.

LOL @ Liara's angry/serious face.

She can't pull it off.

Should've just had a neutral expression like Shepard and Kaidan.

She pulls it off just fine in LotSB.

Not really sure why they went for that expression on the artwork though.

Yeah, Kaidan and Liara are looking at me pissed right now on my computer.

Bad enough I'm playing a Femshep right now, and debating if I'm going to be romancing one of them, or none of them.

Imagine an entire fleet of machines destroying your planet, your race, other races, and everything else you ever cared about. I'd probably be pissed as well. Add to that the fact that all of this destruction might not even have been needed if the council (and other people) had just listened to you when you first warned them about the reapers and there's a reason to be furious.

@Centauri

Strangely enough I did the exact same thing. Romanced isabella because well, the only other female character (played male hawke) was a blood mage and slightly crazy. During my first playthrough I started to think merrill was actually rather adorable. Didn't know merrill would show up on my doorstep eventually since I never flirted with her. Just like you I felt bad for  having to reject her and in my 2nd playthrough (finished about a month ago) I romanced Merrill. Gotta say I liked it better than Isabella's.

I'm also seeing a familiar pattern in all 3 of my favourite bioware romances (Liara, Leliana, Merrill) in that all of them appear quite innocent and all of them have a darker side as well.

One last reference to the 'shiny eyes' thing. I just finished ME1 again and I noticed both the asari and the salarian councillors have shiny eyes in the 'thank you speech' just after beating the game. Thought that was worthy of notice since I don't count the asari or the salarian councillor as innocent people.

I personally would have prefered Shepard to wield the Vindicator. IF he did, that picture would be straight out of my personal Mass Effect canon! B)

Yep, Leliana, Liara and Merrill (although I've yet to complete that romance but I did find her adorable nonetheless). But, before that, I did rather like Bastila and Sun Lian. Had there been other options, however, that may have worked out differently. Now I'm going to be acutely aware of my romance choices in future games. >.>

I'm not sure if this pattern has anything to do with me personally or it's just the way I roleplay my characters. I don't self-insert but I do like to play similar characters in my RPGs, hence the repetitive naming conventions. I like a little familiarity in my protagonists, I guess. Personally, I do tend to prefer the stronger, independent females so my character and I both win with Liara since she's evolved into a tougher character over the course of the games. :)

I liked bastila as well but left her out my 'favourite romance list' because she occasionally drove me nuts with her "I'm a very talented jedi and you're... well.. not!" attitude (Though ofc it did change of the course of time). When I started playing ME1 I didn't know too much about the game, never mind it's romance choices. I romanced Ashley for a time (did Feros, Therum, Noveria, Virmire) and it wasn't until my 2nd conversation with Liara that it actually became apparent that I could romance her as well. Of course it wasn't much of a contest after that. Didn't even have to make the choice because Ash didn't survive Virmire.

I suppose if you're looking for sweet/innocent but also tough characters, Liara is the one you want.
I'm rather curious as to the development of her character in ME3 though. Now that's she's got Shepard back, and a great job (I remember her calling it a dream job, except for the location), will her personality slowly revert back to what it was in ME1? Or will the approaching reaper threat and the potential catastrophy looming over the horizon, in addition to her business as the shadow broker keep her personality the same, or change her to be even tougher and darker?

Lizard, what did you do to her? She looks decidedly un-Liara-like in that. :P

When she told my Shepard about her quest for vengance. I had him tell her that she was obsessed and insane.

I would say it's a justified reaction given what Shepard knows at the moment.

Well she is kind of obsessed...  Not insane, but definitely obsessed.  She broke my heart in that scene before I found LotSB...

My Shepard had faith in Liara and their bond! She was confused, sure, and a little upset but she just knew they'd be able to work things out. She knew there was a good reason behind Liara's behaviour, even if she didn't know what that reason was.

The dialog does not actually call her insane, just her vendetta.

Also: Okay fanfic. Althrough I felt you should have stuck with one point-of-view instead of describing what each character felt.

I probably would have if it wasn't so short.  I wrote it as sort of an experiment.  I have been writing mostly for fun so I have been experimenting with different ways of writing a scene.  Whether from true third-person or a limited third or first person.  It was fun to write though.

A good reason behind her behavior? Maybe, but I still think it's perfectly justified displaying som disbelief and concern when she tells Shepard that she had spendt her last two years getting revenge.
