Aethyta is aware of Benezia's involvement, though. Additionally, she also calls her a "screw-up", implying that she believes Benezia was at fault. Whilst Aethyta is certainly not representative of what the average asari or member of the public believes, I think it's a good indication of what the general opinion is. Furthermore, during the Therum debriefing, the Turian Councilor does indeed refer to her as a traitor.

I just think it would be easier for the Citadel Council to allow Benezia's reputation to be tarnished, and paint her as a willing accomplice of Saren. Had they attempted to exonerate her with vague excuses regarding Saren's charisma, the media and public are going to begin to ask questions, something which the Council is keen to avoid. In the wake of Sovereign's attack on the Citadel, it would have been alot easier to paint Benezia as Saren's aide, and bury the issue quickly and cleanly.

Lastly, Maeko Matsuo and her guards become aware of the fact that Benezia was concealing active geth in the crates she was transporting, and comments as such after Shepard fights them in the Port Hanshan garage. Han Olar also witnesses geth kill the guard at Peak 15, again linking them to both Saren and Benezia, who was a known presence in the Hot Labs, and became eventually known as an accomplice of Saren.

Not going to comment on Aethyta atm because I want to think a little more on my response. As for the Turian Councilor he takes the most negative route for everything so I don't think his view is an indication of the stance the council is taking for Benezia as a collective. I get what you are saying for the attempt to exonerate Benezia due to Saren thing but the council uses that as an excuse many times to flat out tell Shepard she is crazy. If Shepard could be swayed to worshiping at the alter of Prophet Saren why not Benezia?  As far as the media and the public the only two media representatives we get are Al'Jilani and Wong. Al'Jilani has an obvious agenda so much so that it discredits her and Wong seems to be more into less over arcing issues.

Most of the Peak 15 incident would have been covered up by the corporations to keep from having an investor panic.  Even if it weren't the Geth were still the visible antagonists at Peak 15, and Matsuo is a security guard I don't think she'd be allowed to explain in detail Benezia's involvement, again for fear of investor panic. Han Olar is also crazy so his word (while true) would not be the best source of information in the opinion of most.

Side stepping this just a bit because I feel I may be violating the rules of the thread: While I am stoked about Liara being the Shadow Broker and all what practical purpose does she serve in that role? The SB deals in information sure but at this point there are no more lackeys for the Reapers to call on as they are on the way here (still think it would take them a long time to get from the outer halo to the spiral arms but hey this is sci-fantasy) . I know this is an assumption of sorts but really Saren was a happenstance of sorts but the collectors were working for the reapers for 50,000 years and nobody figured it out until Shepard walked head first into it. Even T I M was not certain he had a hunch based on the collector interest in Shepard and in any information he likely got his hands on from Shepard's fight against Saren. To that end what useful intel can the SB give? Aside from the fact Liara knows what threat they face but that is not new information. How does being the SB give Liara an edge information wise?

-please note I'm not bashing Liara's new position I just want to know where BW is going with it.

Also, I may have found the optimal way to incorporate LotSB into ME2:

Step 1) Do the Observer quests on Illium.
Step 2) Go immediately to the Captain's Cabin and save the game
Step 3) Play LotSB
Step 4) Restore the Captain's Cabin save
Step 5) Headcanon in "Shepard wakes up from an awesome dream"
Step 6) Finish ME2
Step 7) Play LotSB again

I tried that once, but it felt like I spoiled things. It just wasn't so good playing it before the end of suicide mission. Instead, I try to space it out.

1) Go to Illium and do the Hacking quest.

2) Talk to Liara and learn about her bloodthirst for the Shadow Broker. Being disturbed by the sudden change by Liara, you leave, and don't return for a very long time. You feel like she's a completely different person now.

3) Then you return before you do the IFF mission, and do the Observer quest, hoping to talk to her. Save your game before you begin.

4) After the IFF mission (and maybe after Legions Loyalty mission), go talk to Mordin. He'll explain how it's unrealistic to be thinking about fighting for people you never met, and instead thinks about fighting for his nephew. You decide to do the same.

5) Save your game, then reload to the Observer save, where Liara tells you the truth, and that she couldn't let you go. This is your flashback.

6) Your crew is then taken, and you go through the Omega 4 Relay.

7) The picture scene begins, and Shepard thinks of Liara, and fights for her.

8) After Suicide Mission, Flash Back to a save from ME1, where you and Liara spend your first night together before going to Ilos.

9) Then do LOTSB. Shepard will remember Ilos after looking at the painting.

I'm still wrestling with how to go about LotSB in my next playthrough.  The delay that you mentioned between doing Liara's quests could probably help, but given that the LotSB starter email comes right after finishing the Observer quest (right?), I can't see my Shepard waiting to respond to it.

I have so many freaking ideas working through my head I've gotta get them down on paper...

However, I should clarify that the ability to have children should be purely optional, and it should only occur following the defeat of the Reapers. Some Liara fans may not like the idea of having children forced upon them, and it would be pretty irresponsible of both Shepard and Liara if they were to start a family before or during the forthcoming Reaper war.

There's also the vaguely-worded asari life cycle that might mean that Liara can't have children for another couple of centuries until she becomes a matron. But in that case, she might have mentioned it in LotSB...

In the secondary codex it states that a maiden can have children if they mate a LOT with the same person and that they can basically mentally will themselves into a matron.

Actually, you can give her the data the moment you meet her, if you ask her to give you intel first. This is the worst way, since she hasn't even told you about the Shadow Broker yet. I've also heard the "about us" line won't appear if you do it this way.

I doubt Aethyta even met Liara. She might have caught sight of her a few times on Illyum but I doubt they became acquainted.

Considering how focussed Liara was on finding the Shadow Broker and possibly Faron, I imagine her daily routine consisted of little else than commuting between her apartment and office. I doubt she'd take time to visit Eternity Lounge and have a few drinks.

In the Shadow Broker Video Archive, there's a clip of Aethyta looking at a portrait of Liara. Aethyta clearly knows who Liara is, but whether Aethyta is her father or not, i don't know.

I had noticed that too kn LOtSB. Who knows during the 2 years period. I'm sure she had off from looking, thought about Shep. I wonder in ME:3 it will be the same some years later. Earth is invaded the Reapers had returned. Shepard, LI and the team, other races talk and fight back etc...

(Sorry on PS3 making me have errors.)

Yes, Liara is so distracted she doesn't even realize Nyxeris is a traitor until you do Liara's side missions.  I doubt she knows Aethyta as anything more than a bartender if even that.

Liara doesn't know about Aethyta, but it seems as if Aethyta knows. I think the devs are trying to send a message with that video.

nahh I think there are thousands and thousands of videos in the shadow broker base...recorded by order of the former Broker to keep track on interesting/important characters. The videos we saw are probably simply a collection of characters our Shep supposedly has searched for.

So if Liara is not really looking for the video of Aethyta I dont expect her to see it

The VI clearly said it had queued up the surveillance footage "you" (i.e., whoever last used the terminal) requested the last time the terminal was used. Liara has surely been through every single terminal there, so she must have been the one to request footage of Aethyta.

I'm not sure if you all already know this but, if you go to Illium and talk to "Matriarch Aethyta" after getting drunk (approx 3 drinks) she looks completely different. Try it, it's weird, and.... What does it mean?!?!?!?! You're pretty when i'm drunk???

That only happens after the "Mystery Drink" actually.

I'm guessing it's the "Beer Goggles" effect.

I thought Liara had selected the videos that Shepard might be interested in but I'm not sure

Well, I theorise that Liara will use her new position as the Shadow Broker to aid Shepard in three different ways:

1. Provide a reliable and trustworthy alternative to the Alliance, the Citadel Council, and Cerberus. Unlike those three entities, Shepard and Liara's relationship is one of mutual trust and respect. From what is presented in Admiral Hackett's dossier, it seems that there are factions within the Alliance that wish to apprehend Shepard, and interrogate her regarding her work with Cerberus. As a result, I think that a possible reconciliation with the Alliance is extremely unlikely. With the Citadel Council, they were always second-guessing Shepard's actions and decisions during the course of ME1's events, and often did not believe her altogether. Combine this with their current refusal to recognise the Reaper threat, and I think the Council may hinder Shepard's progress in ME3. Cerberus is pretty much self-explanatory. The vast majority of players and Shepards are reluctant to continue working with them, and it has been shown that the Illusive Man cannot be trusted on multiple occasions.

Shepard needs someone that she can trust, is willing to aid her during the forthcoming war against the Reapers, and also possesses the resources to fund the mission. That person is Liara.

2. Utilise her resources, and connections within galactic politics to assist Shepard in recruiting the galaxy's various races and factions, and also prompt them into recognising the Reaper threat and aiding Shepard's war effort. With certain governments and intragalactic political organisations refusing to acknowledge the existence of the Reapers, and are therefore consequently completely unprepared, it will be vital to provide the necessary information to recruit these various factions to aid Shepard's war effort, particularly the three Council races. Their support could prove to be vital during this Reaper war, Liara now happens to have top-level access to their governments, which is crucial. Additionally, history has taught us that intelligence and information is of utmost importance during wartime, and Liara now happens to be at the control of the most powerful and influential information network in the galaxy. Again, these are all tools that will be of great use for when the galaxy's races need to fight back against the Reapers.

3. Finally, I think the vast reach and sphere of influence that Liara's network possesses will be extremely useful in hunting for clues that could help defeat the Reapers. This was alluded to at the end of LotSB, when Liara informs Shepard that the Shadow Broker was scouring the galaxy for clues related to the Protheans, as he believed that they could provide something that would assist the galaxy's inhabitants against the Reapers. Furthermore, groups and individuals may stumble upon technology or research that could be vital to defeating the Reapers. However, as these people are likely to be ignorant of the Reaper threat's nature, it may not be utilised. Suppose the Batarian Hegemony or a Terminus mercenary group stumbled upon some form of ancient technology, and then proceeded to keep it for themselves, unaware of the forthcoming Reaper war? Under Liara's orders, Shepard may have to retrieve that technology from these rogue or untrustworthy groups in order to conduct a proper study. Again, I think this was foreshadowed with the information we have relating to the Leviathan of Dis, and the manner in which the batarians have kept it for themselves. Liara's information network may be vital to locate and collect this technology or research,

Obviously, this is all highly speculative, but I think these three reasons will be the manner in which Liara will aid Shepard.

And if she doesn't see if by herself, Shepard tells her. Or Feron. But someone does.

I fully expect Liara to have found out about Aethyta through the Shadow Broker's databases or contacts before actually requesting the surveillance footage. She'd have no reason to look her up otherwise.

Ah, that's a good idea.  I never thought of possible missions like that being part of ME3.

OK, let's say Liara does know about Aethyta.  Then, why hasn't she reaced out to her yet?  Will she ever?  If so, when?

^^ Liara would likely only have found out as the Shadow Broker. She would have been completely consumed by her new position and thought it only responsible to keep working on being the best help to Shepard that she could be. (and well the best help to the galaxy) And not run off to do something so minor in the grand scheme of things.

It will probably be when Shepard confronts her on it and says that she should do this for herself, it's not wrong to know where you come from. Then Liara will probably say what if Aethya doesn't want to see me... etc... /paragon interrupt hug. Go see Aethya.

That would be nice. This would be Liara's personal quest, if they do such things in ME3.

I agree that she's too busy atm to do much about it.
