Personally, from a storytelling perspective I think it makes more sense to not go and get Liara from the SB ship right away. If Liara were capable of "doing her job" from the Normandy, she'd have done so right away. If Feron were capable of "taking over" the SB role, he'd have done so already. And having either of those be the case would have rendered the emotions after the Shadow Broker battle trivial. She would have simply said "With this, I can help you from anywhere in the galaxy. Let's go back to the Normandy." There wouldn't have been the internal struggle with what she wants (to be with Shepard) and what she knows she has to do.
With the SB resources at her disposal, Liara is uniquely equipped to properly direct galactic resources - more so even than most of the governments. Additionally, with feelers throughout the galaxy, she's the best way for Shepard to learn where to go next, and what's keeping who from joining the fight with the Reapers. Liara's gonna be needed right where she is for as long as possible, much as it pains me to say.
As for how/why she eventually joins the squad, the Reapers or Cerberus will wise up and figure out that taking out the Shadow Broker would be the most crippling blow they could deliver the resistance. Speaking from my own personal desires, I actually would prefer a situation where Liara escapes without Shepard's assistance, although there'd be a period of time where we wouldn't know for certain if she escaped the attack or not. Cue emotional reunion, get suited up, and kick some Reaper ass!
I think it makes the most sense for Shepard to go to the SB base asap, but not necessarily to recruit Liara. Shepard will need a place to regroup and forumulate a plan for what she's going to do/what allies she will go to/etc. and she can use Liara as a rescource there.
I will accept this compromise.

*Liara is pleased to see you soon!*
