It makes me giddy, thinking about Liara attempting to learn and cope with the rituals and practices of Christmas celebration.

I had a picture of Liara stuck in a tree with a big giddy face on but the skin tones wouldn't blend and the bristles of the tree were IMPOSSIBLE.

Either way hope you're all having a great day. I got 2 mass effect posters so I'm just plain set. :wizard:

Well, it seems they still celebrate Christmas in the future. Nothing is said if the Counsel races have adopted it, but they now wish for “peace and good will towards all creation.” Still, I wonder if Liara would have to do research to know of the holiday's existence and day.

Smart gal like her? If she's taken a class on pre-spaceflight species it's likely that she also took one on the traditions of Citadel-residing races.
Such a bookworm

For those of you who have written anything involving Liara, how did you portray her? I'm having a difficult time reconciling her apparent naivete with the fact that she has lived for over 100 years. Sometimes I'll have her say something and I'll think to myself "Really? In 106+ years of life, she's never encountered that sort of thing?

So is she naive? Just sheltered? Simply out of practice after 50 years on digs?

100 doesn't mean human 100. Asari probably aren't done their education and living on their own at 18. She has also consciously removed herself from society in many cases to avoid the frustration of social interaction.

There are people who've lived their entire lives without travelling farther than 50 miles from their place of birth.  There are people who've never met someone of a different skin color face to face.  There are academics who've never held a day job in their entire life and have no idea what a 'mall' is.

Sometimes I take more liberties with her character, because I personally find the sheltered idiot personality incredibly annoying.  But I have no problem believing that she's never had certain experiences.  There are people like that.  Some of them on these boards.  It happens.

Hmmm I just realized that none of this actually helps you portray her character, instead we're just giving justification for her actions.

Try having her frustrated or indecisive on what to do in certain situations. She likely may have done some of the things that you encounter, but from past experiences being so poor she doesn't know what to do when confronted with a similar problem again.

I think she's only inexperienced when it comes to humans.  There's really no indication how she behaves around other asari...I imagine she'd be more confident.  ME1 basically picks up Liara and plops her down in the midst of a completely different and new culture for her.  I'm not surprised she acts the way she does.  She has little knowledge of humans (especially considering that they are the new species) but she also doesn't want to offend anyone, so social interactions with them seem to end awkwardly.

I don't think Liara is that naive, or I doubt she could have been too successful as an information broker.

I think Liara has encountered a good bit in her 106 years.  We know she's fought off merc bands/pirates so she's had some contact with the darker aspects of the galaxy.

When I portray her, I just focus on her inexperience with humans.  Outside of that, I don't try to show her as equally inexperienced/naive.

I think my problem was that I had built up her backstory where for the entire past 50 years when she was studying the Protheans, she was out on digs on her own. So that in turn made her a little too socially awkward in my opinion. Thinking of her as just more awkward around humans, particularly one in which she fancies, makes more sense.

Right. I'm not sure she was entirely alone on these dig sites, as she would probably have hired a team to help set up the heavy mining equipment and her electronic equipment. She might have also worked with other scientists on occasion. She just lacks experience with both humanity and with having to deal with someone she's attracted to (Shepard is both).

To contrast with the others, Garrus probably has experience with humans due to working for C-Sec. Wrex may or may not have experience with humans, but he's not attracted to Shepard and wouldn't care if he ever said something offensive while speaking with the Commander. In ME1, Tali wasn't supposed to like Shepard (though, that's been retconned in ME2, I guess) and she definitely doesn't have romantic feelings for mine as she's female. I doubt Tali has had much experience with humans, but she might have had some during her Pilgrimage.

I have a feeling Liara's only real experience with humans was possibly getting shot at by them in merc bands.
