I still do it too.  (though I skip asking Liara about her anger at the Shadow Broker as I prefer the LotSB version of that now).

Oh, you tried the new version? If so, why do you think it's better? Because of the exclusive romance dialogue if you ask why?

I'm definitely going to have to create a separate save once I get to Ilium so I can try out all the dialog options.

My headcanon has Shepard despondent after meeting Liara again and feeling like she's abandoned her (particularly when it was so soon after running into Ashley on Horizon), going to do LotSB right before the IFF, then finishing up the romance after the suicide mission.

Sorry, I'm jumping in on this discussion...

I don't know if Liara is neccesarily more powerful as a biotic. If a non-biotic Shep can defeat biotics without the use of powers, I think that shows incredible endurance and tactical prowess.

Gameplay mechanics are a lousy way of determing a character's powers and abilities.  Boss-fights, which are at the mercy of these mechanics, really demonstrate nothing, other than the obvious, that Shepard is a superb tactician and leader.

As an aside, I have no problem with Shepard being less-powerful than the people he commands, and I don't understand why people have problems with this.  The "Commander" part is what's truly exceptional about Shepard.

I was more or less saying that biotics are not automatically more 'powerful' than non-biotics. If you are skilled enough in your particular vocation, you could be more 'powerful' than someone else of differing abilities. But, again, 'powerful' is vague - I agree.

And I don't have a problem with Shepard being weaker than his/her team members. I think its their ability to lead and utilize their team that makes Shepard the commander.

So how do you roleplay the whole thing if I may ask?

I incorporate my Shepard's backstory into how I roleplay the rocky second chapter of the romance with Liara. Back in high school, a teenaged Kate Shepard fell in love for the first time in her life. Her relationship with her girlfriend was something that she cherished, and she wanted it to last forever. She doesn't fall in love easily, and she has to implicitly trust the object of her affections. However, when Kate enlisted in the Alliance, she and her girlfriend began the drift apart. Any time spent together was fleeting, and the eventual deterioration of their relationship was something that hurt Kate deeply. I think these emotional scars are yet to heal. The fact that the love between Kate and her girlfriend had decayed to such an extent was extremely traumatic for her, and something that she'd never want to experience again.

When Kate first arrives on Illium during the events of ME2, she's understandably terrified. She obviously fell deeply in love with Liara two years ago, something that was not easy for her due to her aforementioned anxieties. She has no idea how Liara will react when the pair of them reunite, and is constantly wondering if history is due to repeat itself with Liara. After her first coversation with Liara, she is crushed. She's convinced that the pair of them are drifting apart, and that she's going to be forced into enduring the same degree of pain all over again. She's horrified that, once again, a relationship with a woman she loves is dismantling itself, whilst she is powerless to stop it. Kate sinks into mild depression, and begins drinking heavily.

Upon asking Liara about her anger at the Shadow Broker, she almost bursts into tears when Liara opens her heart, and reveals that she has endured two years of suffering, all because she was unable to let go. Liara's fears that Kate would hate her, and the guilt that has tormented her, is something that moves Kate deeply. She can see that Liara is clearly pained. What does Kate do?

She...is unable to properly comfort her. She can clearly see that Liara still loves her, but is simply incapable of standing up and giving her a hug. She's fearful and terrified that, if she attempts to force the relationship or pressurise Liara at all, it will fall to pieces, and she will be forced to endure the grief that has tormented her since she was a teenager. Kate is attempting to keep their relationship in some form of stasis, as she's reluctant to comfort or press Liara at all due to her fears that the romance will explode.

This is the reason as to why my Shepard does not comfort Liara when she opens her heart, and reveals the extent of her suffering. Her old anxieties are boiling away beneath the surface, and she's worried that history will repeat itself.

I hope I didn't bore you guys! XD

It's always interesting to hear how other people RP and think how the story makes the most sense.

Thanks!

She's a Spacer/War Hero. After the end of the relationship with her first girlfriend, she eventually attempted to move on to another woman, and start a new romance. None of them ever worked out, and she often ended up having meaningless sex with these women. This obviously changed when she met Liara, though.

After overcoming and enduring the adversity during ME2, their love for each other is stronger than ever!

EDIT: Thanks, Stealthy and ryn. :)

Yes, I do like that.  I like how (with the Paragon version) Liara starts to say, "I wasn't sure you would feel the same about me" but stops herself at "I wasn't sure you would feel..."

Also, Shepard is a bit better.

Also, nice post LET-dawg.

Agreed!  My shep's got a similar backstory (with the broken heart), except that she's an earthborn/sole survivor, so she handles things a bit differently.

Can someone tell me how to get the romance exclusive dialog on Illium? I'm sure it's been answered already but I'd like to try this in a future playthrough.

Aw...right there is yet another example of Liara's fear that Shepard will hate her, or that she no longer loves her. :crying:

Thanks, jlb-dawg.

you mean before really starting LOTSB?

If you didn't get Liara's confession during the Illium cameo, she will tell you it when you give her the SB data regarding Feron. Shepard will ask who Feron is and Liara will tell the story, pick the renegade option and if you didn't move on to another LI Liara will say "Cerberus knew about you and I".

I think you have to trigger LotSB without selecting the "I couldn't let you go" dialogue path.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Lizard, who also provided a more accurate answer.

You don't need to replay ME1! :? Just have a save before the Illium cameo and activate LOTSB ASAP.

Sometimes the journey getting there makes Illium and then LotSB all that more emotional.  I do have saves though when I just have to play through a certain part again.

I'm running through on a higher difficulty, trying to do everything as I see it in my headcanon, so that I can better experience the emotions involved. You better BELIEVE that once I'm done with this playthrough, I'll be keeping a few choice saves around just in case!

I usually save before every covo with Liara in ME1/ME2/LotSB.

Ditto. In ME1, I have a save before every single romance conversation, the initial meeting on Therum, the locker scene during the Normandy's lockdown, and the love scene the night before Ilos.

In ME2, I have a ridiculous amount of saves. There are too many to list here!

I mostly don't use the LOTSB dialogue, because I want to separate the backstory between Shepard and the Shadow Broker out of the conversation. I want the scene to be just about her and Feron, and how Shepard wants to help.

I want Shepard to give Liara the data because he simply wants to support her. He's not sure if she has moved on, or wants to move on, etc. and might have an interest in Feron. But he comes there anyways, because he cares, and wants to help. He's not there because he wants to convince her to join his crew, or try to force the romance on her, or for any selfish gain. He's simply there because he wants to help Liara, even if she chooses Feron.

But if she tells him about the backstory while talking about Feron, then the scene becomes about Liara, Shepard, and Feron. Shepard now has a personal and selfish motive added to the scene, which is to investigate and take down the Shadow Broker for working for the Collectors, and trying to sell his corpse. Which is a selfish motive that I don't want. However, if Shepard was told this months in advance, then it doesn't really matter. It's just Liara and Feron, and Shepard wanting to help.

I'd planned on doing this, but I've been really bad about about it.  Last night I did Noveria and took tons of notes on what people said (Little Wing!  <3<3), but didn't actually make any saves.

Maybe next time!
