So how do you roleplay the whole thing if I may ask?
I incorporate my Shepard's backstory into how I roleplay the rocky second chapter of the romance with Liara. Back in high school, a teenaged Kate Shepard fell in love for the first time in her life. Her relationship with her girlfriend was something that she cherished, and she wanted it to last forever. She doesn't fall in love easily, and she has to implicitly trust the object of her affections. However, when Kate enlisted in the Alliance, she and her girlfriend began the drift apart. Any time spent together was fleeting, and the eventual deterioration of their relationship was something that hurt Kate deeply. I think these emotional scars are yet to heal. The fact that the love between Kate and her girlfriend had decayed to such an extent was extremely traumatic for her, and something that she'd never want to experience again.
When Kate first arrives on Illium during the events of ME2, she's understandably terrified. She obviously fell deeply in love with Liara two years ago, something that was not easy for her due to her aforementioned anxieties. She has no idea how Liara will react when the pair of them reunite, and is constantly wondering if history is due to repeat itself with Liara. After her first coversation with Liara, she is crushed. She's convinced that the pair of them are drifting apart, and that she's going to be forced into enduring the same degree of pain all over again. She's horrified that, once again, a relationship with a woman she loves is dismantling itself, whilst she is powerless to stop it. Kate sinks into mild depression, and begins drinking heavily.
Upon asking Liara about her anger at the Shadow Broker, she almost bursts into tears when Liara opens her heart, and reveals that she has endured two years of suffering, all because she was unable to let go. Liara's fears that Kate would hate her, and the guilt that has tormented her, is something that moves Kate deeply. She can see that Liara is clearly pained. What does Kate do?
She...is unable to properly comfort her. She can clearly see that Liara still loves her, but is simply incapable of standing up and giving her a hug. She's fearful and terrified that, if she attempts to force the relationship or pressurise Liara at all, it will fall to pieces, and she will be forced to endure the grief that has tormented her since she was a teenager. Kate is attempting to keep their relationship in some form of stasis, as she's reluctant to comfort or press Liara at all due to her fears that the romance will explode.
This is the reason as to why my Shepard does not comfort Liara when she opens her heart, and reveals the extent of her suffering. Her old anxieties are boiling away beneath the surface, and she's worried that history will repeat itself.
I hope I didn't bore you guys! XD
