I think some level of electronics skill would come in handy when going through the architecture of ancient space-faring civilizations, no? Aside from when it all goes horribly wrong and you hit the wrong button, encasing you in a bubble field to await rescue.

I think so...they do use highly advanced equipment at these dig site.

Though, I believe there is an actual tech team there with her helping her operate and fix this equipment.  However, I'm sure she picked up some thing from watching them work and asking them to explain things.

The Asari, like every other space-faring species has to have a high level of tech ability, or they would never had got off their own planet, seemingly before any of the current species in the galaxy.

Well there must be tech savvy Asari otherwise how did they make it into space in the first place??

And yeah I agree Liara would have learned a fair amount of tech skill in her capacity as a Scientist and that's where her Electronics skill comes from.

But anyways, what I mean is I want more asari that have nothing to do with sexy. Example, the detective in Samara's recruitment mission. I want more like her, in which she's more of a tough, normal person, doing a normal job, and doesn't care about being sexy. Or an asari who's famous for making this kick ass gun, or car. Or an asari who's lazy, eats too much, and plays too much WOW.

@Rynluna ooh what are they? I never really use her electronics skill, as I usually have her in my squad with tali or garrus.

Yes, but they're not known for it. That's my problem. They're more known for sleeping with everyone, or being a sexy mercenary. Or they're known for "talking things to death". I want that to change.

@TMA I'm sure they exist, we just never come across them cause it's not part of the story. However I agree it would be nice to meet such Asari or hear about them over ad's or news announcements

Also keep in mind that a society that is constantly exposed to tech will be generally tech savvy. Think Amazonian tribe that has been cut off from the modern world vs the average nobody on main street USA.

TMA at least they have 2nd tier attributes shown as well. You know they're big on art, culture and refinement. Though it would be nice if it was further explained.

What can you say about the salarians, krogan or turians? Not much beyond the first codex line really...

I personally would love a LOTR style book for Mass Effect. Pure, straight up nerd-dom and universe facts driving the story.

edit: Heh, tma makes a good point and gets a bunch of responses immediately.

It is unfortunate that certain aspects of the asari are played up (their comfort with sexuality, the fact that they can mate with anyone...basically the sex and reproductive stuff) while others are downplayed (the fact that they were the first Council species to achieve space flight, the fact they are probably the most influential in galactic government).

It's a gender thing...the focus with women in our society tends to be in the realm of sex/reproduction.

I would so buy the hell out of a book like that.  I was recently looking around for an ME1 art book and they're going for anywhere between $100 and $1000.

I know one of them is "ECM is hot!"
I just love her battlecries, period.  Especially the new ones we hear in the DLC.  "Charging biotics!"

Yes, I agree! I hate that they have been given this stereotypical view by the writers/developers, basically reducing them to a race of strippers, ****s, and whiny women taking advantage of everyone else.  How about showing us what they study in school, their day-to-day lives on Thessia, their homes, their government. The list can go on for pages.

Yeah, but they're trying to make exceptions. Example, the polite Krogan who works for Mr. Thax, and the dock worker Krogan who says poetry, etc. I'm just saying I want the same for the asari.

Which is driven by male dominance. Had Mass Effect been written by a team of women, and/or a good number of women been in leadership type roles on the development team, this most likely would have been different.

It's also unfortunately a target audience thing.  More boys play video games than girls.  Make sure you raise your daughters to play video games, so we can get some decent writing!!

I agree, but there is something else to consider. All of that misdirected focus doesn't necessarily harm the asari. There are benefits to being constantly underestimated, especially in politics.

Besides, strong asari are sufficiently represented in both ME1 and ME2. Benezia and Samara may have low-cut tops, but they're extremely powerful figures. Liara kicks some serious ass in LotSB. It's not as if the asari are portrayed as a weak race.

People are just prone to stereotypes. I was happy to see that the most polite character in the game was a krogan. Liara says that the asari are unfortunately looked upon for their sexual freedoms compared to other species, but I imagine turians are often viewed as being militaristic, salarians are viewed only as techs, and the hanar are overly polite worshippers of the Enkindlers. Every species is more than a stereotype, but people can't resist thinking about stereotypes first.

I was looking more from a meta-perspective and not looking at possible in-game benefits.

I think the original critique was against how the asari are portrayed in general, not how individuals are portrayed.  They may not be portrayed as a weak race, but on the other hand, their strengths aren't played up either.

@Rynluna ha lol thanks, I must just give her some electronics skill on my current playthrough just to hear that.

And whilst I'm totally in the 'taking the emphasis off sex/reproduction when it comes to Asari/women in general' I just couldn't term it as well as other's have already.

I noticed in this interview with Patrick Weekes that he mentions a Sylvia Feketekuty as part of the writing staff for LotSB. This would be the first time I've seen reference to a female writer on the staff.

Eh, well I would rather be known as a gifted in tech species rather than the species that likes to sex it up.  lol!
Just saying.
