People are just prone to stereotypes. I was happy to see that the most polite character in the game was a krogan. Liara says that the asari are unfortunately looked upon for their sexual freedoms compared to other species, but I imagine turians are often viewed as being militaristic, salarians are viewed only as techs, and the hanar are overly polite worshippers of the Enkindlers. Every species is more than a stereotype, but people can't resist thinking about stereotypes first.

ding ding ding. People see brad pitt and they say hey! good looking dude! They don't say "oh he's a big fan of architecture and actually writes a number of articles..."

Mass Effect universe is no different. Bringing this back to Liara... wouldn't you say she is the opposite of the asari stereotype? A shy, reclusive maiden instead of one becoming best friends with a stripper pole? Her lab coats are COMPLETELY covering of her entire body, and she's nothing if not awkward in relationships?

@Rynluna ha lol thanks, I must just give her some electronics skill on my current playthrough just to hear that.

It's actually quite useful to give Liara a decent amount of points in Electronics.  Not only does it beef up her shields, but she gets to use the Overload power.

Also, I have played with an Adept that took Decryption as a bonus and between the two of us had every major tech ability without needing someone like Tali to be in the squad always.

Eh, well I would rather be known as a gifted in tech species rather than the species that likes to sex it up.  lol!
Just saying.

Well, I think it's safe to assume Liara agrees. :P

Besides, strong asari are sufficiently represented in both ME1 and ME2. Benezia and Samara may have low-cut tops, but they're extremely powerful figures. Liara kicks some serious ass in LotSB. It's not as if the asari are portrayed as a weak race.

I think the original critique was against how the asari are portrayed in general, not how individuals are portrayed.  They may not be portrayed as a weak race, but on the other hand, their strengths aren't played up either.

Yes, my issues are not with individual Asari, they involve the Asari in general. There are a lot of areas that should have been worked into how the Asari are portrayed on a higher level, like their spirituality, and their passion for art. You see a little of this in the Samara arc but again its completely overshadowed by the sexy outfit with lots of cleavage and the bad ass commando aspect.

@jlb it just never occured to me to do it, though now you say it you make a very good point. I just usually focus on filling her biotic powers, especially barrier.

I do agree that the presentation of the asari needs to shift, and it would be preferable to focus on individuals that are accomplishing something and use their intelligence in order to do so, such as Liara. It would be alot more worthwhile to depict Maiden asari doing something constructive with their lives, and filling occupations that require use of intelligence and mental aptitude. In a multitude of ways, Liara is a Maiden that most should seek to imitate. Despite her relative youth, she has already become an acclaimed scientist, been a member of the team that saved the galaxy, and also assumed the role of the most powerful information broker in galactic politics. Considering the activities of other Maiden asari, Liara's achievements are impressive, and extraordinary.

Additionally, Liara's comments in Chora's Den show that she is disapproving of the manner in which the asari's comfort with their sexuality is exploited by club owners. I think she shares Matriarch Aethyta's belief that Maidens should be doing something constructive with their skills and abilities, rather than wasting their youth working as strippers or mercenaries.

You know, it's really funny how her dad said that, when she's the type that probably did that life. I guess she looks back, and feels like it was all a waste.

IIRC, Aethyta does mention that she was "shaking her ass in some sleazy bar" when her parents killed each other, which was when she was around 100 years old. We know nothing of what caused Aethyta's perceptions and ideas to change, but something obviously caused her to begin advocating progressive reforms to asari culture and society.

I find it quite interesting that Liara represents what is Aethyta's ideal asari Maiden.

Maybe that's what inspired her. Seeing her daughter, and wishes she was more like that in her youth.

Oh, well, you know, like father, like daughter...

Aethyta must be extremely proud of Liara, though. Even before she became one of Nos Astra's most respected information brokers, Liara was a renowned Prothean expert and archaeologist. When Aethyta witnesses her daughter accomplishing so much, and using her talents, skills and intelligence to the best of her ability, it would induce such an incredible sense of pride.

I just hope that Aethyta, following Liara's sudden disappearance from Nos Astra, doesn't believe that Shepard abducted and murdered her. After all, I'm sure that eyewitnesses have confirmed that Shepard was the last person to be seen with Liara.

If Liara and Aethyta meets again then by god I hope it doesn't end in some sort of side-mission where Shepard has to use his persuade skills or else the meeting will go to hell with both Liara and Aethyta pissed off at each other and Shepard.

I would actuelly love if that was the case. Could lead to an interesting scene with all three characters meeting each other. Aethyta could be trying to track Shepard down in order to get answers regarding Liara.

I wonder if Aethyta knows about Liara and Shepard being an item? Speaking of the paparazzi...do you think their relationship was well known outside of the SR1?

Yeah, that's true. I'm just reluctant to put Aethyta through any more heartache, to be honest. The fact that she is estranged from Liara is something that clearly hurts her, given that she's drinking alcohol as she wistfully stares at Liara's photograph.

I think so, yes. News and gossip travels fast, and I'm sure that Commander Shepard's personal life was a hot topic following the Battle of the Citadel. Additionally, certain individuals seem to know of their relationship, such as Kasumi and Tela Vasir, as scamper mentioned.

I don't think that Shepard and Liara's romance is a secret by any stretch of the imagination.

But it would such a great way to kick off the first family re-union! With Shepard's future "father"-in-law trying to kill him! :P

Argh!

Actually, try to imagine the emotion of the scene if Aethyta were to have Shepard pinned against the wall, angrily demanding that she tell her of Liara's whereabouts. Just as Aethyta is about to really lose her cool, Liara steps into the room, and warmly smiles at her estranged father.

This reunion has the potential to be so emotional. :)

Exactly! This is why I would like if Aethyta tries to track Shepard down, the following reunion scene could be so heartwarming.

Does Vasir mention them being together? Because I didn't notice a difference between non-romance Shepard, and romance Shepard.

I'd always assumed that this line was romance-exclusive:

"She was certainly into ugly. No offense."

That, and Cerberus were also aware of their relationship, given Liara's dialogue at the beginning of LotSB.

Heh, imagine if Aethya struck at Shepard, knocking him unconcious. Liara walks in to see this random asari who 'killed' Shepard.

No that line is also with the friendship version, or at least I remember hearing it.

Cerberus knowing could be because they were spying, but anyways, I think it was known in the media already.

Oh the drama! ^_^

But really. A scene where Aethyta tracks Shepard down could be dramatic, heartwarming and with a little mix of humour at the same time!

Yeah Aethya and Liara's personalities would be clashing at first, I imagine a bit of humor would fly back and forth.

But after that initial wall of humor/confidence breaks down I'm sure the two of them would have a very serious and touching moment.
