Ah, another point....part of what makes Liara 'Liara' is Ali Hillis and it won't be her voice in the movie :crying:

True. :crying:

Liara's voice is one aspect of her character that immediately appealed to me during the first meeting on Therum. It's wonderful!

What would be worse than however they might portray Shepard is how they would show Liara after Hollywood got their hands on her.

Another point....I hope they wouldn't play down her geeky-awkward ME1 nature in order to turn her into a sex-bomb or something.

The only way I'm watching the movie is if they stay the hell away from Liara and instead focus on some other important event in the Mass Effect universe.

This.

And also stay away from Shepard. Not even a pre-ME1 Shepard. My main shep is female so, for me,  most likely they won't even get the gender right.
I don't know. Perhaps the First Contact War might be interesting, featuring some random kickass space marine of course....

Ummm ... have you >seen< Liara's ambient elevator animations in ME1? She's already a sex-bomb. Just a geeky-awkward one who is endearingly oblivious to her own sexy.

Just a minor quibble - I do agree with your overall point. I'll also chime in with no interest in the ME movie, unless it's a no-Shep prequel.

Yeah, that fic tried to tell the entire Shepard/Liara romance story after ME1 (including having a child I think too) as well as wrap up Liara's parent issue.  I'm always wary about this (as a fanfic writer) given that there still are two more games coming out and anything you write about will become AU.    Therefore, when I get up to the LotSB stuff in my fic, I'm going to end it (momentarily) and not continue on to avoid potential conflicts with the canon that will be established in ME3.

Though, if others like to write like this then more power to them.

Actually some of my favorite stories were written early in an unfinished canon (at the time) and later rendered AU. It's interesting to see the directions where some of the characters could have gone. Often the author comes up with something more interesting than what "actually" happened. It's also fun reading early drafts of the canon stories to see the characters in their formative stages.

Before the Star Wars prequels came out, Tim Zahn put it this way: "We expanded universe authors are basically playing in George Lucas' driveway. We'll just have as much fun as we can before he backs out with his truck..."

I noticed her ambient animation for the first time the other night.  I had just finished a conversation with her and something else drew my attention away from the monitor.  I turned back and saw her running her fingertips from her collarbone down to her hip and I had a  moment.  She doesn't do it very often, but it was definitely ...  odd to see

That's true...I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just anal about such things myself when I write.

One of my fave FemShep/Liara fanfics is actually completely AU, to be honest....I still enjoy it, though.

Hey, at this point I'd take anything Tim Zahn has written over Lucas.

What?! Is it a regular animation or kinda like legion's robot dance where it's maybe-once-a-playthrough

Regular animation - not every elevator ride, though. I can only imagine it was some standard asari animation that was tacked onto Liara because she's an asari ... 'cuz it's a little OOC, but entirely hilarious. Almost easter-egg like.

Kind of how one of the asari dancers on the video playing at Hotel Azure in LotSB looks just like Liara. Coincidental Liara-lookalike? Using the Liara-model for expediency? As a joke ... or a nod to people in the old Liara thread who were insistent that any Liara DLC should include Liara dancing in that outfit like Kelly does? Whatever - it's still there, and really kind of funny.

Zahn should be drafted to write an ME novel. It's definitely his kind of universe. Plus we need a Lazarus project for Brian Daley, another person I was thinking of when I mentioned AU stories that were better than canon.

As far as the movie is concerned: Not many video games have stories that could almost directly be transferred to the big screen, with even people who haven't played the game being able to understand and enjoy it, but ME 1 certainly is one of them. So that would certainly work, maybe better than if someone has to write a new script. ME 2 on the other hand is an example of a story that can only work (somewhat) in video games. If that was made into a movie, then the audience would be scratching their heads, and critics would rightfully denounce it.

But if the movie features Shepard, then I will certainly not watch it anyway, because it wouldn't be my Shepard. Furthermore, Shepard would almost certainly be shown as just another cool! and emotionless action! hero, and there are enough movies like that already. But even if some other character will be the main hero, he (and of course it will be a he) will be just like that too. And I don't even want to know how they would portray Liara or the Asari in general.

But who knows, maybe it'll be surprisingly good. Perhaps it will be less like ME 2 and more like LotSB. I doubt it though.

When I was watching, she did it twice consecutively.  I've never seen it on the elevator, though (I'm beginning to wonder if my elevator rides are bugged, since I can't talk to anybody, and I know I've seen videos of conversations being initiated on the elevator)

Shepard can initiate no conversations during an elevator ride. Only the companions will talk among themselves occasionally, though way too infrequently.

We get onto the subject of the writers a occasionally, but this needs saying, and just thinking it made me happy: somewhere out there, a computer-nerd workaholic BioWare employee is eating dinner and contemplating the best way to implement the awesome Liara content slated for ME3. So, Thank You, cnwBWe - you'll likely never read this - you're probably busy scripting something cool - but if I ever run into you and have any idea who you are, I owe you a pizza and a 2-liter bottle of Mt. Dew. Go forth and compute, my friend.

Yeah, this fic looks like it was written before ME2 came out. It's truly epic in scope (300k+ words, I think), and it has an amazing amount of detail, not all of which I'm a fan of. One of those details was the wedding scene, which really played up the Asari sexuality with Liara wearing a barely-there wedding gown. It may be possible that such a dress would be what the Asari wear, but I didn't enjoy yet another instance of Asari sexuality being played up. It seems to cheapen them as a species.

I read this one... I just wish I could remember the name. I didn't mind the sexual elements there, though, since they were... well, only being displayed among asari and heavily trusted others; sexuality as a means of pleasurable bonding more than one of display to all.

It's called Rising from the Ashes.  I certainly didn't mind the sexual elements, since even in-game it's stated that the Asari are very comfortable with their sexuality, it just felt like it was over the top.  (Wouldn't mind seeing some fan-art of Liara in that wedding dress, though...  :innocent:)

Thank you for the link; I suddenly remembered everything I disliked about it (the somewhat overwrought beginning, Pressly being demonized, Ashley being weirdly elevated, etc). Though maybe a lot of this is just the clash between how I perceive my Shepard and how the one in-story is presented.

Oh no, I agree.  Though I can definitely see a bond forming between Ashley and a FemShep, it seems a little flimsy.  Tali's relationship to Shepard is even more tacked-on, though.  I like it because of the sheer scale of it (and holy crap, I didn't realize that it was a full 30+ chapters long!), and the amount of thought and detail put into the story.

That said, I don't know how much I enjoy the story itself, and therein lies the problem with any Mass Effect movie that centers around established characters.
