I don't understand why the V\\\\O of Garrus refused to give an interview, his facebook is all over with ME and Garrus stuff.:(

Is that true??:o

This is epic. Pity you couldn't get Brandon Keener though.

Sovereign is suprisingly up-beat. Was expecting him to speak in all caps and talk about how he's the vanguard of destruction.

And I lol'd at the response Douglas (Legion) had to "How did you land your role in Mass Effect." Legion is a pimp.

Well technically he didn't refuse to take part. He just didn't respond to me. I posted the request in his discussion area of his Facebook. I would have loved to have him on board but if he's not interested I'm afraid there's nothing I can do. It's a shame though as this article is really one of a kind.

Hey, this is neat.
Although it didn't get off to a great start...
Q: How did you get the part?
A: I auditioned.
A: I auditioned.
A: I auditioned.
A: I auditioned.
A: I auditioned.

-_-

But it's great that so many actors are taking part and I'm sure better questions will come soon. :D

I'm glad you brought this up. See, that's the difficult thing as I don't want to axe any answers neither do I want it to be repetitive. So yeah, I understand the opening part is indeed repetitive but as it progesses deeper into the interviews I ask some pretty interesting questions to each person. I hope you stay tuned!

Part 2 is going live soon.

It's a fantastic read and, comapred to part one, contains more unique questions for each of the main cast. Also, you get to read the official character specs Bioware gave to D.C Douglas before recording for Legion. Very interesting! There's much more but I don't want to ruin it for you.

Thanks for part 2.

Fred Tatasciore sure loves long answers.

He sure does but i'm just glad that he's willing to go so in depth about it. It would have been dissapointing if all the answers were too short and too bite sized.

I'm surprised how much he knows about Saren. He even knows what he did during the First Contact War. I love how seriously he takes his roles.

Gideon Emery is not separated from Yuri Lowenthal.:P

I really liked that 2nd part, but I'm disappointed with Jennifer Hale...

Reading through part 2 right now. Finally! The first was expectedly boring given its introductory nature, but this one is absolutely fantastic! Can't wait to read the whole thing.

Great questions, by the way! :)

Note: Reading Fred Tatasciore's comments made me realise yet again just much we missed a personalized antagonist for Mass Effect 2. Saren was a great adversary.

Fred Tatasciore said...

Using this cat and lizard idea, there’s a stillness, intensity, and intelligence inherent to him, which only makes him a stealthy and wise warrior. As a man, he has tremendous honour, no matter how Machiavellian. He is efficient, genius, and strongly directed.

Fred Tatasciore said...

In Saren’s character, there is a method in his madness- he needs to serve The Council, and eventually, The Sovereign effectively. He has brutally efficient methods that get the job done. He is a soldier to the end. He lost his brother in the First Contact War, and sees humans trying to dominate. It is for these reasons and more why he dislikes and distrusts humanity (and even has little regard for life). So in his sadness and unbroken and calculating resolve, there is tremendous humanity, and I tried to play that by keeping this hidden under his cold austerity, not tipping the hat too much (hopefully). We find out he is a cold beast with a heart of gold. He has hidden empathy, and justifiable reasoning.

This guy GETS it. He must have done tons of research to get the kind of insight into Saren's psyche as he describes above... you can tell he loves Mass Effect lore. A shame he probably won't have as prominent a role to voice in ME3.

Thanks and I agree about the first part but it sadly it couldn't be avoided.

Thanks everyone! Part 3 is yet again a great read. :)

Part 3 is a great read, you ask some good questions.

Sounds like a tough job (ha ha "sounds"), and it is sad that not all of the actors get to meet each other.

So Mark Meer plays all the vorcha? Why do they give the lead actor so many different roles? :P

I think this part is my favourite. Now because it had the most epic answers (I think p2 has them), but because it was "intense". Lots of questions, lots of answers. My only wish is Mark Meeer and Jennifer Hale to be more talkative. They must have at least as much to say as Fred Tatasciore. (who is a really mannered guy, as I see:o)

Two minor mistakes:

1. In your question to Vanessa Marshall you made a typo: aAsari

2. You didn't seperate Steve Blum from your question. [in your last question to him, at the end]

Edit - just finished reading Parts 2 and 3.  It's getting more and more interesting.

I just realised how absolutely mission-critical Ginny McSwain the director is. She's like the Phantom of the Opera in that, although she uses someone else's voice, it's her that we hear.

The actors came from 2 extremes (both equally good IMHO). On one, which includes like Saren (edit - I have more and more respect for this character, his VA portrayed him more as a hero rather than a villain, that was fascinating), they really seem to develop their own ideas on the characters in advance. On the other, such as Grunt, they deliberately come in as a blank slate. In all cases though, they praise Ginny.

I'm not sure if it's normal for actors to praise directors as a professional courtesy, but it's fascinating to read. I also think the editorial decision to have each Part of this series focused on individual topics rather than individual actors really help highlight insights like this. Thanks Retroplayer.

Quoting a Stargate (SG-1/Atlantis) director: "The squeeky wheel gets unemployment".

This is a very impressive project. Great questions, good answers. Looking forward to part 4. And yes, "Saren" is more awesome than ever.
