I've read in several places on the Wiki that some or all equipment oculd be upgraded by either selling it to themerchang in camp going away then coming back and buying it back. Or by placing it in the party storage chest and doing the same thing.
I've tried both methods and they don't seem to work for me. Is this a console only thing or something I'm on PC.
If it is no longer possible to do this what level should I wait to do the DLCs then to get the best versions of gear?
Also while I'm on the subject of DLCs on my previous main character I did Warden's keep but never got any new skills do you have to do something special?

The storage chest works only on consoles, but the buyback should work on PC. Of course, the highest possible level depends on your level.
To get the Warden's Keep skills you need to drink the potion in the room just before you meet Avernus.

What is the level requirement for Tier 6 or 7? My rogue is level 16 but Duncan's Sword is still Tier 5 while i have numerous tier 6 and 7 items.
I'm currently playing a level 11 character and was about to go start doing the DLCs but didn't want to cheat myself out of stuff at end game.

I think lvl 18 gets you top tier in origins

Tier 7 = level 19. Wade at Soldier's Peak is the best merchant for upgrading your equipment. Some unique items DO NOT upgrade (ie Cousland family sword, Nug Crusher)

Thanks everyone!
The Cousland family blade doesn't upgrade? wow so is there any point in keeping it in my inventory? Hmm maybe there's a story dirven upgrade for it yet I have yet to make it to landsmeeto n one of my characters.

I read that it does upgrade, and wasted over an hour trying to upgrade it at every merchent in the game. Then I read it doesn't here. Ticked me off cos I had already sold it to Levi before reading about weapon upgrading.
P.S.: Wade is not at Soldier's Peak, he is in Denerim in Origins and at Vigil's Keep in Awakenings.

I think when she said "Wade" at Soldier's Peak, she really meant Mikhael Dryden- I've upgraded a few weapons and possibly armors through him. And I have the PC version and am still able to do things like upgrade Duncan's Dagger to tier 7 in Party Chest, yet I have issues with upgrading Duncan's Sword beyond tier 5, even Mikhael hasn't worked. Gorim is also capable of upgrading weapons, but he's also lowered weapons a tier or 2 randomly, I think the whole merchant/chest tier upgrades are random and you just need to keep trying to get it eventually upgraded.

@Davester, if you have a PC, there's mod that will add a 'magic chest' to your party camp that will do free upgrades.

Yes, on PC it is the blacksmith at Soldiers Peak you can sell to, and buy back upgraded if you are appropriate level. He won't upgrade stuff if it has runes in them, so you need to take those out first. Some stuff he won't upgrade at all regardless.
So save before you sell, see what he upgrades, then load and do your business.

@Davester-oni: I had some troubles upgrading some equipment on PC too. E.g. Duncan's Sword. Finally I found out what works (at least for me but maybe it helps you too).
Make a save just in case something goes wrong (so ESC > save game).
Sell the item(s) you want to upgrade to Mikhael.
Quicksave and reload.
Buy back the item from Mikhael.
This way the items were always upgraded (ofc only if they are upgradable). Another method I tried before was changing the level and then buying them back, but that did not work for some items.

You don't need to reload with Mikhael as he re-tiers every time you ask, so just keep asking to see his wares until the item of interest is tier 7. Levi is cheaper to buy back from but with Levi you do have to either reload or go to camp and back.
BTW - the tier an item changes to is semi-random. The range goes up as the pc becomes higher level. You need to be level 12 to have a chance for tier 7 gear. Of course, some items do not change tier. My rule of thumb - ask Mikhail 3 times and if the item stays the same then it is probably not upgradeable.
