My 2 cents

As stated by EA Games' label president Frank Gibeau on the IGN article, EA is planning on ditching single player only games, and this is a situation that gets me very worried.

First I am a Mass Effect fan and second, it is still possible to make GREAT/AMAZING single player games.

I am worried now that EA will now make BioWare create a multiplayer part for ME 3 after this comment by Frank Gibeau.

I hope that EA does not ask BioWare to implement this so called, change, on Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect is a perfectly fine single player game, that is very good and does not need multiplayer, but I sure would not mind more quality DLC (like LotSB and Overlord).

Then again these companies, all they care is about the money, so with a multiplayer part of the game that is even more money they can get from DLC, with map packs and weapons and such.

So please BioWare, do no implement multiplayer on ME3 (and remember BioWare is making a multiplayer game anyways, so I hope that that game will make EA not want to put multiplayer in ME 3)

Thank you

Nowhere does Gibeau explicitly mention "multiplayer". Any supposition of multiplayer is on your part.

If multiplayer does come into play, I hope Bioware uses its strengths (great storytelling and character interaction) as the foundation instead of attempting to copy fads.

From the IGN article:

"It's not only about multiplayer, it's about being connected," he said,
"I firmly believe that the way the products we have are going they,
need to be connected online. Multiplayer is one form of that."

"I volunteer you to speak to EA's studio heads; they'll tell you the
same thing," Gibeau continued, "They're very comfortable moving the
discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative
or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget,
packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you're out. I think
that model is finished."

Mass Effect is simply 1 of the best singleplayer games ever, don't let EA destroy ME3 in the future like they destroyed the last C&C Tiberian Twilight.

Mass Effect 3 without SinglePlayer would be a Mass Fail!

The whole idea with EA is that every game they want to release (in the future) Must have an online component, that either being social networking options, or a DLC download system and the like. Nowhere, never do they imply every game they release will from now on have a Multiplayer option. I wish! Since NWN I havent seen a single good RPG with Multiplayer that isnt a MMO. (see my signature)

Though I feel not all RPG's should have a Multiplayer component, a new game with NWN style Multiplayer and a Toolset wouldn't hurt.

Just because YOU dont use Multiplayer, doesnt mean someone else wouldnt. Just because YOU dont like it, doesnt mean someone else wouldnt like it. Same goes with Online options.

I've played NWN multiplayer since 2003, and enjoy it so much, that I really can't play through the Singleplayer only RPG's for long. But MMO's are horrible, compaired to a less massive NWN persistent world.

All EA might want to achieve, is that Singleplayer fans and Multiplayer fans can get something out of a game. Future will tell if they sucseed at that - that's up to the developers of future games - but I do support the idea to try and support both Single and Multiplay. And Online options, which is the trend these days in the industry.

I'm a bit indifferent on the Cerebus network, or Dragon Age (origins/2) Online features.. as without a Multiplayer option like NWN i'm quick to loose interest.

Mass Effect is a finite trilogy, at least the first "chapter" is. To change it to a MP-only game is not going to happen. Since they need to finish the story.

NWN MP is great because most of it is user created, chances of something similar happening are quite slim.

Back then we were considered as "generally sensitive, intelligent people who respond positively to quality entertainment", not drooling cashcows.

He's not incorrect: online features (of which multiplayer is a part) are the future (we're pretty much already there) of gaming. Anyone who took a look at Xbox Live and didn't think this was going to be the case was fooling themselves.

I still can really do without all the Battlenet / BSN / XBOX Live stuff.

It doesn't hardly add anything even mildly interesting for me... and even the minutest resources spent on it are resources wasted, IMO.

Does he say that all games will be forced to have multiplayer? No.

Does he say that all games will sell better if they have multiplayer? No.

Does he say that multiplayer is one form of this "connected gameplay" that he believes EA needs to embrace in the future? Yes.

Can you be cynical and believe that this is just wordplay, that EA is secretly announcing a "everything gets a deathmatch addition" under a banner of extreme euphemisms and lies of omission? Yes.

Did you try to make me stupid but ended up making yourself look stupid? Well...:innocent:

It's really interesting to me how for some people "gaming" is a personal activity while for others it's a type of communal activity. I mean this is obviously a spectrum with all sorts of people in between, but I'm always thoroughly confused by the people that are vehemently against MP in general.

Sorry for the derail, I'm just thinking out loud. Bored at work and I don't wanna do meaningful stuff.

What almost all of you fail to realise is that Bioware the last 10 years ONLY have been doing single player games.

This has been most dissapointing for me. All since the multiplayer in Neverwinter Nights I have been waiting for another similar game from Bioware for 10 YEARS!!

I don't know what you are crying about...but it would definately not hurt to have multiplayer in a game. Ok...I am not saying that EVERY game needs to be a multiplayer game but also every game doesn't have to be single player, like you have been spoilt with the last 10 years.

Yeah..I know now FINALLY Bioware is working on a multiplayer game (SWToR) but it is a crap mainstream game for kids because they are a much bigger company now and they can only make super mainstream games to sell big.

I wouldn't ever play on a console for starters....

There is not much point of me commenting here however. This has all gone mainstream...

I now await titles from other companies...

But I'm still playing NWN in waiting for that.....

What you fail to realise is that you're wrong. TOR's been in development for, what, 3-4 years at least, right? Then they advertised for people with multiplayer experience, and since Mythic became BioWare Mythic, they've now got Ultima Online, WAR and DAoC.

I would say that BioWare have been doing multiplayer for some time.

I don't CARE if they have a game in DEVELOPMENT.

Well they should make Mass Effect 3 MP mode seperate in the game.. and definately NOT remove the singleplayer story, that's the most important thing

It seems ME3 will include multiplayer.

http://xbox360.ign.c.../1139585p1.html

"Fresh reports are suggesting that Mass Effect 3
will be announced at this weekend's Spike Video Game Awards - and that
the concluding part of BioWare's trilogy will include multiplayer."

BIOWARE, please do not focus on multiplayer for ME3. Finish Shepard's story, finish it right. Then if you want to continue the Mass Effect universe with a MMORPG or whatever, go ahead, but don't screw up the end of Shepard's trilogy. EA is rotten, don't listen to them.

I'm not wrong. Not to mention NWN came out in 2002, with the expansions coming in 2003 (And a DLC collection in 2005), so it's been, what, five years?

Eight years, but I still agree with you.

Also, they cut support for it. So they should really make a new one. They've already lost one customer over it.

Of course, they can always count on 2 million others to buy their washed-up products.
