Man falling off cliff: "Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!"

Mass Effect has enough trouble playing to the RPG and the Shooter crowds, now you want to add online play and disrupt the class balances? People overlook that one of the biggest pulls of the ME franchise is that as Commander Shepard you are the hero you are the guy with the skills and leadership and badass persona to do the job, be the center of attention, and save the galaxy.

All of that goes out the window when you introduce online multiplayer. It'd turn a 10/10 franchise of epicness into... meh Halo was better. More importantly though it'd take resources away from the features that made ME into the premiere game it is: story, cinema, and... well actually that's it - that's what really sold the series. I'd much rather see the money they put forward towards mplayer be used for making sure they get the best script, the best VAs, the best art and scenes, and some continued DLC after the trilogy's final release. Beside's, EA is now the head publish of the upcoming Old Republic mmo - LucasArts transferred pretty much everything except the licensing to EA and BW and for all intents and purposes that appears to have some RPG elements akin to Mass Effect involved with the dialogue tree and companions.

Basically, just let ME3 become the single player masterpiece its destined to be.

You make a very good point.  The individual story of Commander Sheppard would not be feasible in a MP setting, and it would rob the series of the personal commitment so many players have invested in this epic narrative.

No, I don't think that Mass Effect can be a multiplayer and single player games. It just won't work in my thoughts. Though I think that Bioware can make another game that's not Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

AC: Brotherhood is a good illustration of the damage that adding multiplayer can do to your single player game. It is a fine multiplayer, but the single player component is subpar.

Spin off is okay, but keep that stuff out of ME3.

Okay, now I actually read the article (after commenting first, Slashdot style). He is just saying that the games need an online, connected component. Multiplayer is just one manifestation of that. DLC and dynamic content is another. We are already seeing that in Bioware games.

This is a case of a bad headline.

Definitely not. Then again, its pretty much inevitable, since that multiplayer programmer they hired last year has been assigned to the studio responsible for ME...

Nope, thank you.. if they kill any more RPG and insert some action i can´t buy ME3, even if i loved the story in the first two parts.. and Multiplayer is certainly no RP for me... not with the Shooter Attitude it already got in ME2.

To the EA guys blabla... i better won´t comment anything.

needless to say, it is very very bad idea on mass effect game. it's not some crappy FPS games like black ops, or halo reach. some of you don't understand why these games are crappy when it comes to review. don't believe all ****ty review todays. actually, it is effected on more commercial.

anyway, I think that mass effect should keep the traditional way what it has been for ME 3. but co-op could be possible if thing would be happened. but I don't think so. please, Bioware. don't make this crap because most games have MP? it's not even necessary for such a great game like ME.

They thought Assassin's Creed couldn't pull off multiplayer but I think it turned out fine. It was addictive for a couple weeks but wore off.

If they go with that approach, it's a desperate attempt to gain some CoD and Halo fans but will fail humorously. The trilogy itself shouldn't have multiplayer in there, I don't care what anyone says. It has no place, that's what spin offs are for. When companies, look at Bungie's Halo Reach, go for multiplayer, they tend to spend more resources and time into building that aspect of the game than the actual story. Bioware will unfortunately lose a lot of fans if they go this route with ME3.

While the article in question didn't specifically state that ME3 would have a multiplayer component it does reflect the new philosophy  on game design prevalent at EA.  This isn't the first time this idea has been discussed either.

Here is an article discussing this very idea back in May (pre E3):

http://news.softpedi...er-143415.shtml

I think we have all come to terms with the Cerberus Network, but my fear is that it won't just stop here.  There is a lot of discussion in the industry that all action related big budget games should include a MP component because of the success of COD, Halo, RDR/GTA, etc.  I have heard rumors that the Montreal Studio was staffed to work specifically on MP projects.  Since the only MP game in development by Bioware is Star Wars the Old Republic (being developed out of the Houston studio) it stands to reason that this new team would work on one of the other two blue chip Bioware franchises, namely Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

Since Dragon Age will be out in March of 2011 and there hasn't been any press describing a MP aspect to that game it stands to reason that the Montreal team is working on a Mass Effect MP title.  The real question is, will this be Mass Effect 3 or a spin off.  Only time will tell....

As much as I love the ME games, if I heard the 3rd one would be a multiplayer Halo-fest craphole I wouldnt even bother.

Go ahead and make a ME multiplayer game, just finish up what you started first and dont pull a "Old Republic".

There should absolutely be multiplayer in Mass Effect 3. As long as it's a separate mode that doesn't take away from the normal 60 hour adventure, it just adds more bang for my buck.

Mass Effect 2 could have been more successful. Wasn't there a statistic that 50% of all players didn't even finish it? And you don't even see it anymore on the list of top games still being played. The vast majority of gamers love multiplayer. Those are always the most popular titles. I have no problem with the series going more mainstream to gain a bigger audience

If multiplayer does show up they would do well to have one of the other studios develop it in tandem with the single player development, taking the fewest resources as possible away from it. I have to admit though, I would love to see some co-op, but keep it simple, don't design it around coop.

Just allow someone to import their Shepard then don't even acknowledge them. Please don't try to write in a character for them, just say they're a new human spectre or a corsair or something and leave it at that. If they have to they can use the muliplayer conversation system developed for SWToR, but it'd probably be fine without it.

If that article really speaks for all of EA, then it's a dark day in video game history.

Single player games are the only way a developer can convey an idea directly to a player without interruption or obstacle. There is practically no way to do that in multiplayer.

Example: I just got WoW: Cataclysm, and I've been trying to enjoy the story (which is pretty good) but it's really hard to do when there are 30 idiots around me spamming their abilities while the story character is trying to talk.

But I don't mind that, because I know that those types of multiplayer games will always be like that and I'll just have to deal with it, and if it ever gets overwhelming and I get tired of it I can just switch to a great single player game like Mass Effect. If everything becomes multiplayer then I (and hopefully others) will be pretty upset and hope that EA will put some effort into putting more single player games out there.

No.
But I would be happy if there are plans to introduce new characters in a new ME game.
Or if BW would tell the storys of some of the already known characters like the creators of Star Trek did with the new Enterprise-film.
