I'm thinking the three arrows icon might mean it's an action that ends the conversation? Like:

(player selects "I can help you")
Hawke: "I'll do what I can, but first we have to get out of here."
Isabella: "Agreed, follow me - I know the way"
*conversation ends*

But that's just a guess.

It's a choice icon. It indicates you're making a decision, rather than selecting a tone.

FaceFX and facial expressions are one of the last things we add, because of the possibility that something will change and then we'll have to spend twenty minutes grumbling and cursing as we adjust the 'angry' emotion just so in order for it to look okay.

So the Hawke blank stare of doom will be out of the finished game? Or at least not as prominent?

Generally speaking, we add it in polish - so while I can't promise it won't ever appear, there's going to be a lot more going on with non-speaking characters once we get our polish time in.

Will this dialogue remain neutral amongst all Hawkes or change depending on tone?

Depends on the choice.

Terrible made up examples:

NPC: Will you save my kitten from that carnivorous tree?

PC Choice 1: No way.
PC Choice 2: Leave it to me.
Aggressive version: I'll handle it. Just stay out of the way.
Diplomatic version: Don't worry. I'll save your cat.
Humerous version: Why not? It's been hours since I've been attacked by a potted plant.

versus:

NPC: What will you have today, the usual?

PC Choice 1: The usual.
PC Choice 2: Nothing right now.
PC Choice 3: Pie.

In that case, since it's sort of a stretch to write different tones for, "I'll have pie." that would just be "I'll have pie." One version for all personalities.

I'm trying to picture John Epler's reaction to these kinds of comments after graciously coming here to explain something.  I can't decide between a facepalm, mild anger, or resigned laughter.

Or maybe I'm projecting my reaction onto John.

At this point, if I took any of this sort of thing to heart, I wouldn't be on the forums.

Brock isn't someone I ever take offense to anyways.

Actually, once someone has declared themselves to be unreasonable and decided it's their mission to be that guy who stands around at the party repeatedly telling everyone else how boring it is-- but never actually leaving-- it's easier to just tune them out than you might think.

@David Gaider How do you guys tune them out? I so want to know as whenever I see them post it just makes me want to facedesk. after a double facepalm.. which I guess really makes it a knuckledesk seeing as my knuckles will most likely hit the desk rather than my face.

You just roll your eyes and move on, man. It's not like they're fooling us into thinking they're fifty people because they've posted ten snide comments in five different threads, so relax. Image IPB

No. You're not seeing a very clear shot of him, there. I wouldn't read too much into it.

I can 99.9% guarantee there is a convo in origins where you got diffrent tones to choose from in a conversation. I remember where you could be an ass, or be more lulz about it.

Anyhow, this isnt really a thing of "taking away from origins" I'm talking about what's in DA2.

All the tones are in DA2, but we dont get to pick them even though they're made, unless we do X numbers of agressive/Diplomatic/Sarcastic remarks first. That's the issue, strange as it may be, im not acually being an origin elite here :P

Yes, we had lots of these. They were what we considered purely role-playing choices. They didn't have any lasting effect. You picked "Shut up, stupid shemlen king." when talking to Cailan, and Duncan was taken aback, and then the conversation went on exactly as usual. Those are the points in DA2 where you have tone choices. It's exactly the same.

The difference is that in Origins, when you actually made a choice that mattered, most of the time the choice was written to be neutral. "Alistair will be king." "Anora will be queen." No tone to the line at all, because there's not room for it among the choices. In DA2, you pick "Alistair will be king." And it gets delivered according to the dominant personality choice you've made.

If you're not able to treat each other with respect and avoid the name-calling and vitriol, you are not going to be welcome on these forums.

Couple of warnings and bans handed out. Be respectful to others with different opinions than your own.

I would hope that's the case.  Having different employees with different views, opinions and ideas = more creativity, better ideas, and a better game.  But yea, once the decision is made, thats it, you move on and offer your ideas/feedback in other areas, since there is no point in beating a dead horse

Crikey, yes, I would hope there were blazing rows about it.

Absolutely. On occasion we have throw-downs here that make the forums look like a tea party. If you want a group of people who are both nerdy and incredibly passionate about their particular nerdiness, you need look no further than the folks at BioWare-- not to mention that our personal stake in the game is slightly more than how fun it'll be.

That said, at the end of the day we can only make the one game.

It's just early storyboard / presentation, anything on there is probably gone into the abyss of the Writer's Pit and changed.

Nothing in it ever came from the writers. It was a high-level "This is the general look and feel we want to go for" concept thing.

I'd like to point out that if you're not planning on discussing points, but rather feel the need to just jump into the thread and toss off what you no doubt see as a pithy remark, you will be warned. If you just want to feel clever and aren't planning on contributing to the discussion, it's best that you rethink that urge.

Other people are entitled to their own opinions.

Just because someone doesn't like the direction the game is going is no reason to shout them down. Discuss points and leave out the personal attacks and flippant dismissals.

Are you quite sure you didn't have that opnion before watching the video?

I talked to Mike Laidlaw at comic-con and he assured me that the PC version would control very similarly to Origins but with some minor changes in the camera, etc.
So I've been holding out hope this whole time that he was being truthful and I'd get a game that played similarly to Origins.
Everything I've seen so far makes me not believe a word he was telling me.
They need to do a full blowout of how the PC version looks and plays and that may satisfy me. But so far, I'm getting very very worried about it.

I consider it bad form to lie to someone's face. It controls pretty much exactly like Origins did. If you played console, it controls pretty much the same as it did on console.

And the two control schemes are sharply different.
