Giving rogues teleportation mutant super powers so mages don't have a monopoly on badassery is a ridiculous over compensation.

Again, it's not actually teleportation, it is just a reperesenting the swiftness of the rogue.

They even did it in Awakening.

Shhh ******. As discerning customers it's our job to always assume the best about everything, no matter how minor and no matter how much evidence supports that view.

I'm fine with more responsiveness as that could potentially make things more tactical even, but the fact that the animations and speed with which they're seemingly achieving this makes the entire thing look quite comical and cheesy to me.

I think I see what you're saying.  Something like this maybe?

*pause game, assign various commands for the party*
*unpause*
*BRIEF EXPLOSION OF WTFPWN*

Oh, yeah see that strikes me as the very definition of responsive.  If the cooldowns are too short (or removed, like in the exaggerated Varric portion) or abilities are simply over and done with in a flash, I could see that becoming a problem, but those things can be balanced.  But more importantly I'm sure I can't really judge that just be watching a brief gameplay clip or two.

Well that's just the thing, I was always thinking about that when people said the combat in Origins was unresponsive, and I was going, "huh?"

I'd like to point out that if you're not planning on discussing points, but rather feel the need to just jump into the thread and toss off what you no doubt see as a pithy remark, you will be warned. If you just want to feel clever and aren't planning on contributing to the discussion, it's best that you rethink that urge.

Do we know that?

No, but COMMON SENSE says it is.

Also considering how Rogues in Origins could summon Bears while in a Cave,  Warriors could be anti-mages and in Awakening spirit warriors, Why is it that you raise a fit over THIS?! Oh right, because everything about Dragon age 2 is crap. Posted Image

Some of it was responsive, like ranged attacks.  Some of it wasn't, like melee ones - where we got the shuffle shuffle swipe unresponsiveness, or just whiffing on engaging the target entirely.  The most controversial introductions to DA:2, the teleporting and the charging, seem to be a direct response to this.

We can dispute the aesthetics of it all day.  But to me when it comes down to it, I'll just be glad my warrior is attacking the target I want and the rogue is getting the backstab off without shuffling for what seems like an eternity.

Actually, I think Gaider has confirmed that for story reasons it is exactly this.
For me the problem stems from it being a basic class ability.  I'm fine with specilisations giveing rogues and warriors magical abilities, I just don't like the over the topness in the vanilla class.

good.

question: regarding the issue of clipping, what are the methods you're using to avoid it, i'm no expert on the matter but is it a matter of accommodating the animations in the way that clipping is reduced or does the armor design also change to reduce clipping issues in some cases?
i'm sorry if i'm being very clear on the question.

Well, let's be fair and admit that whether Flicker or it's corresponding talent in DA 2 is stupid is a matter of personal opinion.

If it is a graphic animation intended to communicate the swiftness of an assassin type character I guess I would be okay with that. I didn't have a problem with it in Awakening. I just don't want teleports because it seems like a lore buster of the set of rules that were created for the Dragon Age world. When the rules of a given created world are improbably broken, the result often ends up being a contrived feature.

Pretty much.

I'm fine with micromanaging things  and enjoyed doing as such in Origins. But with the speed of the new system I wonder whether things will develop so fast when unpaused that instead of being able to watch things develop and actually see the animations when you unpause its just BAMWTFBBQPWN! and you're left with your guys doing something completely different because they already burned through the given command and now their tactics have taken over and they're running away into a crowd of Chalkspawn.

Well, given I plan to play a tactics-heavy game (as in the pre-programmed ones) that's not a huge problem for me as my uses of pause will be more scattered and deliberate, but I definitely can understand how it would be worrisome for pause-and-play enthusiasts.

It sounds like Nicholas Boulton who voiced Vaughn from the City Elf Origin

I think I heard he also voiced Ser Bryant?  But yeah, it does sound like him.  Wonder what the female voice will be.

Yeah it was a little too long-winded to be pithy, you're right. My point is that I agree with the point that the rogue animations make me think Hawke should have blue-skin, dodgy parentage, an X-gene and should currently be dead.
It's quite frustrating that an opinion about the design direction gets shouted down and dismissed so quickly by lots of people on these boards, it's hard not to make a cynical reply about it after a while.

Edit; I'm just assuming that vaguely passive aggressive post was directed at me. If it wasn't then I apologise.

Then why isn't it represented as a swift move? Teleportation tricks and stop-go animations look ridiculous. For combat to feel responsive you need fluidity in animations, and the rogue fighting shown to us is anything but fluid.

Sweet!

Flemeth is definitely badass. Hawke's VA is good. I did find the rouge gameplay a little... off, though. The speed of normal attacks seemed a bit slow.

Got to admit i'm not digging the whole now you see me now you don't teleporting thing, does seem a bit weak but then again it would be hard to make rogue attacks realistic in a party based dynamic combat game. To get that you'd need something like arkham asylum.

Ah thanks NC! that makes sense :) it was just a little disturbing to see in the interview though considering Isabel just hit up on him lol

hawke's thinking to himself:

"God dammit, if only my sister wasn't right behind me!"

"Meh. You go on now, I got me important hero-type stuff to do."

I think it looks excellent, animations and all.
