And thus we come to the same problem as the wooden automaton that is mShepard or butch automaton that is femShep. Yet people still insist that voiced PC is more "alive." I take their word for it, but if I had my choice I'd kill it dead.Piecake wrote...
I'm glad he doesnt sound like a gruff, take-no-names baddass, because then it would have sounded extremely odd if you were nice and diplomatic. I think a regular sounding (or 'neutral') is the best way to go because it can still be believable no matter what personality/direction you take your character in.
You are making quite a leap from what I said and a 1-2 sentence line. What I meant was that he simply had a regular sounding voice - meaning not too high, not too low, meaning that he could pull off being the nice, diplomat or the take-no-names badass, and everything in between.

Yeah I agree, its not exactly geared towards wide screen monitors/TVs. Its not a major issue but I'd like to see a reason given for why the UI has been changed.
I could understand on TV's and the consoles, but there isn't much of an excuse on PCs. I like the semi transparent map, but much like the other aspects of the UI its seemingly positioned towards the center of the screen too much and not up against the corner out of the way.
And for some reason the health bars over the hurlocks with the sword symbol and label? Whats up with that? I know they were in Origins, but again, in that DA2 shot the text is massive and the health bar is massive compared to DAO- its looks like something ported over from the console, as that stuff is much smaller and less obtrusive on the PC in Origins as it makes sense since you're likely playing closer to a monitor and don't need the massive chunky floating thing to get the relevent info.

It's not a leap, it's just common sense. In order to appeal to a wide audience, you have to get a vanilla voice.Piecake wrote...

Considering that the marketing seems thus far to have been directed towards the male console player, it's not really a surprise that it hasn't done anything for me.Piecake wrote...
And hey, if you think the game will suck, it wont take much for it to exceed your expectations. Either that, or you'll end up with a self-fullfilling prophecy kinda scenario.

you implied with your automaton remark that we'd get no acting, no personality, and the same monotone throughout the game no matter what personality direction we took our character. That is an assumption and a leap. Could that assumption prove to be correct? It very well could, but i'd still prefer that to no VA
My point was an actor with a regular sounding voice can pull off(you know, act) the nice diplomat and the take-no-names badass and still sound believable. Clint Eastwood and Batman's bastard child wouldnt sound believable as a nice diplomat. Just as the flamboyant male character from Will and Grace wouldnt be believable as a take-no-names badass.

I know this is a late quote. But yea - i agree. Isabell is probably most beautiful character ever made by Bioware and in that picture it makes Hawke looks like a Borg. Or Varo'then from War of the Ancients, when he was speaking with Azshara.
They could at least make his eyes slide down for a second, as she was turning around.

The more I see about the game, the more I'm convinced that I will need to spend a lot of time customizing my tactics and focusing my micromanage on a mage Hawke. Honestly it seems less oriented toward "cooperative"/pause&play/party based gameplay (but maybe I'm wrong). It is certeanly more action oriented and more fast.
I really agree with Laidlaw when he said that it's difficult to explain in words how much the game has changed while remaining faithfull to the original in many ways.
Obviously it has not a lot to do with BG legacy and it's a little bit sad to hear Darrah speaking of that style of gameplay with dismissive words (at least the tone sounded dismissive). Chess is the better game ever

As other had said, his mind just went to a happy place. I'd also like to point the fact that the shot never goes below Hawke's waist.

Didn't Mike Laidlaw respond to this by pointing out that in that game you only have one class: Batman.
Still, DA2 to me at least, looks like it wants to be an action game. More than Origins anyway. And Arkham Asylum has some nice animations in it that don't look all floaty and WIZ BANG ZAP DASH like Rogue HAwke has got going on.
Really, when I bring up Arkham Asylum, I'm just bringing up the fact that the animations there have some heft and "oomph" to them while still being fast. When Batman punches someone it looks like he's actually punching someone hard. Its...dare I say, visceral. DA2? From what we've seen? Not so much.
Edit: Oh and here is some more déjà vu : I'm still waiting for some narrated PC gameplay walkthrough footage.
The problem is we still need to see a decent amount of gameplay footage. I agree that so far the animations have looked really quick (lol like Hawke is trying to remember what he's doing before each attack) but I'm still going to reserve judgement until I see "minutes" of "clear" gameplay footage.
So far I've only seen like 3 attacks in a row...........
Thing is, they're not quick. They took Origins animations and removed the middle frames. It goes from still pose to still pose with no connection in between. As much flak as Origins animations seem to get, at least they flowed naturally from strike to strike. If you need to speed up the swing, speed up the swing, don't remove it entirely.

I remember one of my female friends getting pissed off at how her Shepard does this "Yeah Baby" smile when Shiala starts pulling the moves on her.
She does not want lesbian sex, the game should not assume she does.

The game assumes a horny male teenager (isn't that redundant?) playing.

Well, in DA:2 selecting "That's it?" (the option in question in ME1, I think?) would have a <3 icon or something similar, thus doing away with that of issue.
If you help her the sleezy smile you give her is unavoidable.

This is something I have brought up often on the forums. It is unavoidable and forces something onto your character without you, the player, being able to choose how to react. Man or woman, heterosexual or not, in a comitted relationship with a love interest or not, you stand there looking interested. There shouldn't be instances like that. Because I help someone, I automagically am interested in them wanting to hook up with me -- no.

The thing is, whilst not one for making such sweeping statements, I think that 'relationships'/'reactions to people' is one of the areas Mass Effect falls down on heavily. Whilst yes you can have moments of approving/disliking what people say, it never tends to stick and then you meet up with people later on and its as if your BFF even if last time you met, the person said they were going to leave as soon as they could. Then there is the often talked of issue of you only being able to get more dialogue with them if you romance them. I just hope that in ME3 if there is a potential meeting with Shiala and Gianna Parasini (another one who can push herself on you if MaleShep, although it's more quick/abrupt and I don't recall Shep reacting to that in same way as they do Shiala) that you can brush them off, though at same time should obviously also be the option to take it further for those who do want to as wellDeviija wrote...

To bring what am saying more on topic. In counter to the above, DAO didn't suffer from that thanks to the approval system. If you got them to be in the disapprove their reactions to you were different to if they were friends/loved you. And there was no real moments where people bushed themselves onto you without you being able to react. I imagine it will be more of the same, maybe even more with this new friend/rival system. Take the line we've seen Isabella throw in the video, I doubt they are going to have Hawke grinning like a cheshire cat when they get round to polishing it. Though I doubt his (or for benefit of Lady Hawke being in that position 'her') will remain in the current 'neutral/blank stare into the distance' look either because they are going to have to accomodate for both the people that think Hawke would be interested in what she just said and those that aren't. So to some extent it's a bit of a fine line they would have to tread to get it right. Lean to much on the interested line and you get the similar response you have for Shiala, lean to much on the displeased and you get those who think he should be interested finding it unbelievable.
So to that extent the best expression (IMHO) would be a 'stunned' look, mouth slightly ajar with Hawke wondering if she meant it the way s/he thought she did. The same expression Shep should've had in the Shiala incident.
Stunned expression allows for various interpretations of it. Stunned in a 'ooh like the idea of that' or stunned in a 'oh my god, she did not just do/say what I think she did' kind of fashion. Granted they do tend to leave to a different expression afterwards (grinning or look of disgust) but thats when you pan the camera away from the face so it leaves it up to the players mind which way they meant it. Looking at that cut-scene it can pretty much do that once she goes off screen, as I imagine that is when the camera will pan back to normal view.
Just my views on it anyway.
One thing that I would really love to hear is the full version of Hawkes theme, the one that is often used in the trailers that I read somewhere is called that, if that is true can't wait to here it in full.
Another thing that definitly sounds interesting is the whole concept of the party working properly as a 'team' to take enemies down rather than just a group of individuals. Sure in DAO you could set the tactics up to do something like that, but it sounds like they are taking it to a new level in DA2 specially if it anything like the Legends Teaser that was linked yesterday with Mage casting a spell on arrows the rogue was firing.
