not to be arrogant or anything, but it may be the rules. it used 3rd ed. DnD wich was dumbed down(read: simplified) to the level of kindergarden.
i am unable to get into any 3rd+ ed games, anything after ToB is just, meh... maybe it's the fact that your character can be a fighter/mage/druid/bard/barbarian/sorcerer/goat/bluewhale... just plain old max 3 multiclass with simultanious xp progression or dualclassing at 7 or 13 is more my taste.
and the point distrbution doesn't allow good rolls anymore... i felt betrayed by the fact that mostly 17 and 18 roll couldn't be aquired with a lot of patience anymore.
not to mention that anything after IWD2 lost any kind of tactical gameplay that made me feel awesome when playing... there's nothing quite like bringing down Firkraag at level 7-10 with the right tactic.
or being able to get through some tough battles nearly untouched because you used deep tactics rather than 6 fighters hack away.
not to mention ToB battles on epic scales, 30 min+ battles (which was a great turnoff for many) really got me in a great mood.
3rd ed was dubmed down for the masses, lack of tactical combat and party interaction was a huge failure of NWN, alas it was just a multiplayer client and a toolset(with an SP demo tacked on).
