I am kinda worried about how "dark" DA2 will actually be - "Dark Fantasy" does not mean just adding ridiculous gore effects to the game and it definitely is not having a hero who can single-handedly tear hundreds of enemies apart, that's High Fantasy like Lord of the Rings. It's quotes like "Press a button and something awesome happens!" that make me wonder how close you'll stick to a Dark Fantasy theme - Dragon Age:Origins already was very borderline Dark Fantasy a few times.

I am kinda positive that the story will be well-written again (but please, try to include a lot less plot holes!) yet there's still doubts...and the news we yet have aren't helping at all.

Thanks :)

I love the internet definition of a plot hole. It's hard to nail down, but it's typically something like, "plot device I didn't like" or "unanswered question."

Plot holes are pretty specific things.

It's really more of a marketing term than anything. I wouldn't expect it to be any darker than origins, just grittier, bloodier, and sexier ;)

I think the "press a button" line is used to much, pretty sure it just means "push a button and your character swings a sword or fires a crossbow instead of just starting combat with an enemy" Basically they meant combat would be more like mass effect and they just worded it poorly

They seem to be putting less emphasis on the dark thing than they did with DA:O in the marketting. Though that may be just because they've already established the setting..

To be honest, all Bioware RPGs seem to end with basically the same level of darkness, really.

I'm just going to go ahead and point out that "dark fantasy" is a VERY broad term.

I didn't consider DAO to be dark really, I mean visually it was very washed out, and dreary, but story wise it wasn't any darker than your average Brothers Grimm story really. The only part that stands out is the city elf origin, and that was just a vague allusion to rape.

It was always dark heroic fantasy, anyway, something which everyone always seems to forget.

Oh great it's this thread again. We've already been through this, most people don't think it's dark fantasy, the others believe what advertising tells them.

Dark doesn't mean lots of blood and a few mentions of rape. If BioWare didn't market DAO as dark fantasy I'm pretty sure none of you would have said it is, just like nobody will say Fable is dark fantasy even though it has the same ammount of "dark" as DAO.

I'll say it again, Dragon Age is NOT Dark fantasy. It's just a marketing line. DA is no darker than LOTR, Baldur's Gate, NwN, The Elder Scrolls etc. BioWare has always had BS marketing.

Dark fantasy needs an dark bleak atmosphere of depression. DAO has a high fantasy atmosphere of LOTR and DnD. Dark fantasy are A Song of Ice and Fire and The Witcher saga, DA isn't even close to their level of dark.

Then again, there's people that consider Harry Potter and Twilight as dark fantasy so...

Appreciating your comment Shorts, yet this thread is not about the many plot holes in DA:O - plot holes in general are parts of a plot that appear to be illogical.

DA:O was somewhat dark, but not nearly as much as the rather absurd ad campaign had made it out to be. DA2 may be just coming off as less dark because we haven't heard marilyn manson yelling at us.....yet.

Well, the Twilight series made me die a little inside. I would say it qualifies.

As stated above, yes, DA:O wasn't already "real" Dark Fantasy, then again, it IS a very broad genre. If I was to nail it down to one game, what about The Witcher? It seems to be pretty Dark Fantasy to me - and we can all agree that it was much darker than any Bioware game ;)

Heroic yes, most people people wouldn't deny that. But dark? You've gotta be kidding me...

Is the Witcher dark fantasy? I know it's fairly grim, but it's grim in the same way as that guy you knew who painted his nails black and drew anarchy symbols on his textbooks, like they've seen dark done in some film once and gone with that look. It makes me roll my eyes.

Mind you, I'm probably not terribly fair to it. The name alone winds me up.

Haha, indeed. It made the world a little darker, name another fiction that managed that?

Well, in order to get a darker game, there needs to be more blood and guts flying into the air.  Particulate matter will then absorb certain bands of visible light with thus darken the game by having less overall light intensity.  Wait... that was too literal wan't it?
:pinched:

As for Dark Fantasy, DA:O was darkish.  Depending on your choices it can be anything but happy (until said choice was completed and everyone seemed to go back on their merry way; I think that was more of an issue of having a non-linear chunk in a linear game.  Too many variables if you consider all possible choices AND order of said choices).  So considering there is the same writing team for DA2, I'm guessing it'll be close to Origins in terms of the tone of the story.

I meant the books. But I consider the game dark fantasy too, since it had a dark atmosphere of depression with very bleak outcomes of your choices. Dark Fantasy needs to spell out GRIM. DAO was as dark as LOTR (which is labeled as high fantasy)

Whoa whoa wait a second here folks. Are we using "dark fantasy" interchangeably with "good fantasy" now? I won't begrudge anyone their preferences, but I'm getting that vibe.

Splashy gore and black leather-clad darkspawn do not an ominous and emotionally draining tale make.  Clearly some people in positions of authority are confused about this fact.

Dark fantasy: Have sex with every woman you meet, and get a shiny achievement for it.

High fantasy: Seduce all the compatible love interests in your camp, and watch your lovers have a shouting match before forcing you to decide who you really want.

See the difference?

The Witcher = Dark Fantasy

Dragon Age = High fantasy with blood and guts.

Frankly, I found Arkham Asylum to be darker than Dragon Age... and the former got a PG rating. ;)

Going off topic here, but I blame "The Dark Knight".

For some reason producers of all forms of entertainment seem to be equating "grit" with "good". Rumor has it that the next Superman movie will be a 'dark' film, because apparently that's what sells.
