Frankly, I found Arkham Asylum to be darker than Dragon Age... and the former got a PG rating.

One dark thing doesn't make it Dark fanatasy, just like GTA isn't an RPG for having RPG elements.TheCreeper wrote...
It was certainly cynical in places, look at Ozyammar and how almost every good intentioned action could cause things to just go to put, never before have I seen helping a girl advance her education lead to a possible crusade
In DAO your choices are black and white: there's good or evil, and there's ALWAYS a better option where everyone lives happily ever after with sunshines and rainbows. Dark Fantasy would mean that ALL of your choices result in grim bleak pessimistic outcomes.
I'll say it again if BioWare didn't market DAO as dark fantasy I'm pretty sure none of you would have said it is, just like nobody will say Fable is dark fantasy even though it has the same ammount of "dark" as DAO. It's just a marketing line

Then again, there's people that consider Harry Potter and Twilight as dark fantasy so...
There are people who consider the Twilight books the greatest literary work of this decade.
To me, Dark Fantasy is an umbrella term used often in marketing, and the more often it's used, the more often it's misconstrued. Marketing terms are great for attracting attention, but basically, I'll like or dislike a game regardless of what boxes people want to put them in. I find the term itself pretty meaningless at this point.

Started with Blade, that. It's more to do with selling realism than seats. Well, originally. As you say, people are copying it without really getting that. Hollywood likes a good trend to run into the ground when it can.Pugnate wrote...
Going off topic here, but I blame "The Dark Knight".
For some reason producers of all forms of entertainment seem to be equating "grit" with "good". Rumor has it that the next Superman movie will be a 'dark' film, because apparently that's what sells.

What was dark? In my not very humble opinion....
The Elves were destroyed and ruined as a civilization. Conquered...twice...culture all but gone.
Mages breached Heaven and were cast out to become the darkspawn.
The Maker has literally abandoned the mortals.
Loghain. Human noble origion tells the tale best, but his actions are dark to me.
Many of the innocent people I tried to save died despite my heroes efforts.
Demons posses mages and make them abominations.
Templars stand ready to kill each new circle mage if there is a hint of possession at the harrowing.
Grey wardens are doomed from the start. Drinking the darkspawn blood means you WILL give in to the taint even if it takes 20 years.
Maybe I just love the setting lore, but its nice and dark to me.

Well you see. There's this amazing thing called "comic scans", with it you can read comics that are no longer in print.TheCreeper wrote...

By those definitions NwN, Baldur's Gate, LOTR and The Elder Scrolls series are also dark fantasy. So does the high fantasy genre even exist?bill4747bill wrote...

To the OP: Dark is a relative term and some even misapply it. I doubt you will even find 2 poster in this thread who would agree on it. I suggest you simply find out as much about the storyline as you can before buying. If you are really worried about it, wait and see how others like it (with similar tastes to yours).
SPOILERS FOR DA:
In my own opinion, I did not find DA overly dark. The outlook through the game was bleak, as it was supposed to be, but I didn't find it "dark". The only parts that really got "dark" for me were Hespith in the Deep Roads (*shudders at the memory of her little chant*) and the Alienage orphanage. Other than that, I was fine with it and I'm a Roses/Sunshine/Unicorn kinda girl.
And I'll say this to Bioware - thank you for letting there be nice moments, too, such as being able to save Connor & his mom. Just because a game is "dark" doesn't mean it has to be all tragedy and sadness. There's enough of that IRL.
I admit I worried about the "dark" when DA was coming out. I'm not worried about DA2. I learned my lesson.

I am not sure that dark fantasy only allows for negative outcomes for all choices, just a general mood of darkness/cynicism/pessimism.

The problem is, there ALWAYS an option where everyone lives happily ever after. Take the Connor quest as an example, you either kill the boy, kill the mother or EVERYONE lives. If the 3rd option wasn't present I would have considered that choice as dark. Though DAO still lacks the grim atmosphereMorroian wrote...
