I’m happy to announce that a demo mod of Chapter 1 of “Betrayal at Krondor” is available for play-testing.
Anyone who is interested should let me know and I’ll give the invite for the shared DropBox folder (you must have a DropBox account to do this).

I am inviting serious play-testers to download these files to make sure the game actually works on a computer other than my own.  Since this is my first module “release,” I might have forgotten to include some files or something, and I’d like things to be ready to go before posting to the Vault.  Mask of the Betrayer is
required.

There is a text file with instructions at the download location, but here they are anyways:

These are the necessary files to play Betrayal at Krondor, and where they need to go:

1.  Bakhak.Hak and Bakhak2.hak files in the NWN2 directory HAK folder.

2.  CONTENTS (NOT the folder) of "Bak Music" in the NWN2 Music folder.

3.  Put the folder "Betrayal at Krondor" in the Campaigns folder.

4.  "Chapter 1.mod" file in your Modules folder.

5.  "bak.tlk" file in your the "tlk" folder.

6.  "owyn.bic' character file in the "local vault" folder

7.  "owyn.tga" file in the "portraits" folder.

8.  Put the folder "BaK GUI" in the ui/custom folder.

You MUST play the module with the pre-made character "Owyn Beleforte."  If you do
not, this module will be awfully confusing!  Don't forget the custom portrait.

There is an in-game manual in Owyn's inventory. Use it to find out about the gameplay, and it also has some beta-testing tools.

This is a beta-testing version only, and should not be voted on.  Any respectful and constructive comments about the gameplay are welcome on this post and will be taken seriously.  Thanks for playing!

I'm glad you|ve come to this stage of development!

I hope you find willing souls to playtest it (I would if I had the time as BAK is awesome)

I was wondering if this project was still alive. I look forward to its release. Sadly I lack the time to properly playtest at the moment. I hope you get enough volunteers to properly put the mod through its paces.

How many hours of play time could one expect, and would you be willing to consider varying levels of involvement.  I really liked BAK and think it's great to have it adapted to NWN2, but I am knee-deep in a module and pretty busy.  Nevertheless, I would hate to see this project held up due to lack of participation.  I was thinking that if it isn't too long, I could help out with one play-through.

The main thing I want to know is if I missed anything in the installation package. So you could just download and install the files, go through the opening cutscene to make sure the TGAs show up, move around a bit and equip some of the items to make sure they appear in-game and that the custom icons are there. For a complete run-through, I think that Chapter 1 could be between 4-8 hours, depending on how involved you get with some of the side-quests and fairy-chest hunting. A full run-through is less crucial at the moment, as I'm pretty confident in the final product. I just want to make sure the thing *works*!

Here's a question: I'm including a custom GUI file with the end of the file-name being "X1," obviously referring to MotB. Do I need to include one that ends with "X2" for it to work with SoZ?

It might be a good idea to post this on the official Bioware mod forums, as well. ;)

Can you post a bit of background, for these of us that don't know the original module?

Nice screenshots, I'm playtesting another module at the moment, but it looks great, so I'll try to play it when I can.

Edit: @Hekateras: What forums? These are the official Bioware forums.

I think that's what the ;) was all about. Sort of a snap snap click click grin grin wink wink say no more sort of thing, maybe. I had to look at it a couple times myself to prevent me from making some silly wisecrack in the same vein as you Arkalezth (how is that pronounced, by the way?)

Heh, that's a good question. That's the good thing about being Spanish, no problems with the pronunciation. I mean, I pronounce it as I write it (kind of, "th" is similar to the Spanish "z").

I did pronounce it that way, sort of a Castillan Spanish with that z being a soft "-th" added to the already existing th. I just wanted to make sure that, in my head, when I read your handle, that I am pronouncing it 'correctly' as it was intended to be heard. Thanks!

And we now return to our scheduled Topic Matter.

The OTHER official forums, guys. http://nwn2forums.bi...rums/index.html Which I'm only bringing up because batmanis already posted and threaded there about this project in the past, and the most recent update on it is from JULY. An additional audience full of potential playtesters right there.

I'm confused. Have I committed some sort of "forum faux pas?" I didn't know I could still post on those older forums.

Those forums were closed in July. This is the official forum now.

Yes, I thought you could mean those forums, but as Kamal said, they were closed some months ago.

Yup. And if I am not mistaken, there is a notification to that effect on those forums. I don't think it's prominently displayed, but it's there. And if you didn't know it, I wonder how many more out there are wondering just what the heck is going on and why folks aren't still posting there?

"Betrayal at Krondor" is a game made by Sierra/Dynamix in the early 90's, based on the Riftwar novels by Raymond Feist.  It was later novelised by Feist himself.  Here's a great video interview with Feist, which was included on the original CD release:

The player character is Owyn Beleforte, who is thrown unwittingly into a complex sequence of events revolving around the moredhel, Gorath of Ardanien.  Several characters from Midkemian folklore, like Jimmy the Hand, Prince Arutha, Pug, and Martin Longbow make appearances and some are even playable!  When I first played this game, I had not read any of the novels, so everything was quite unfamiliar, but the gradually emerging plot-line and superb character development really drew me in.  So, no experience with the novels necessary, but you may find yourself reading the novels after finishing the game like I did!  The game spans a series of 9 chapters; the demo about to be released involves just chapter 1.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm not familiar with the novels, but it looks interesting. I'll have to give it a go.

ArdaniEn. Ahem. ^^;

Moredhel is the Midkemian kind of dark elf. Not drow. Just tribal elves who've been at war with humans since forever, partially due to the humans' occupationist tendencies. Think pointy-eared Native Americans.

Important background info: About ten years before the events of the game, the moredhel united and tried to invade the Kingdom. They were ultimately driven back. It was a complete bloodbath for everyone involved, but especially for the moredhel.

Hope that helps things. :)

The original game manual had a nice summary of those events; I will probably include that in the in-game manual.  The character bios are taken straight from the original manual as well, so make sure you read those.  Arkalezth, you can go ahead and send me a message with your dropbox info so I can send you an invite.

Now I'm testing Path of Evil, so not much time left. Maybe when I'm finished, but I have a long module playlist, so I can't promise anything. Thanks for the offer, anyway, I think I'll play it, I just don't know when.

You are my hero oh mighty Remaker of BAK. I love orginal and demo taste good. If i remember in orginal BAK you can knock to all buildings in towns. Do you plan to include it?
I remember this funny conversation of locklear or james with deaf peasants...

Looka forward to other chapters. I think when finished you will make to hall of fame and top of it.

Hey lodoskrzydly, thanks for the kind words! (I posted this reply on the vault also) I can definitely make all of the doors available like the original- it would add an element of search/surprise instead of just spoon-feeding the doors that actually have conversations. All "special" conversations that occur in the Chapter 1 zones are there as far as I know, but if there's one I'm missing, let me know.

I think the "deaf peasant" convo is later in the game, perhaps in zone 3; but again, correct me if I'm wrong.

To answer your other question on the vault, this is a demo chapter only, the final product will be an actual campaign, and it will be easy to transfer and change the player and companions across chapters. As for the chapters without Owyn, I'm sure I'll figure something out- I'll probably write a script to store all of Owyn's stats, variables, and items, and then change the PC to the avatar of Patrus, employing of HIS stats, which are subsequently stored, etc.
