Anders has been mentioned in several threads, but I thought it was about time he had his own thread. This image is from the developer diary released earlier today.
So what do you think? Is the male character next to Aveline Anders? Why or why not? If it is him, what's his purpose for being in the game? If not, who the heck is it?

I'm hesitant to believe it's truly Anders, if only because Bioware seems to have a fetish for that type of face and hair color. I would however squeal like a little school girl if he did turn out to have a cameo of some sort in the game.

I would not be able to tell you if that is Anders, and neither would anybody else that doesn't have the Bioware icon under their name, but this man certainly has a remarkable resembalance to the him.
Still, he could just be a random NPC despite his extravagant clothing and closness to two other party characters. He could be part of Isabella's crew as well.

If that's indicative of new mage clothing then I am excited! I'm disappointed that we haven't seen Nathaniel in any DA 2 screenshots yet but won't complain if that's Anders. We need to have a good looking, sarcastic, blonde party member still (actually, Varric might fill that role a bit this time around).

The outfit reminds me a lot of the Tevinter magister robe. I like the boots! Gosh, I love all the footwear in this game so far.

I definitely won't complain if it's Anders, either. Having him made up for not having Alistair in my party for DA:A.
That being said, the Anders look-alike in this shot isn't carrying any sort of weapon. That doesn't make much sense to me, unless he's being held captive by the templars yet again.
I don't see Meg with a weapon either though, so who knows if that means anything.

Unless they are completely retconning Awakening, it can't be Anders.

That's pretty much how it has to be for any important character from DA:O or DA:A, since you could kill/not recruit most of them, if you chose.
Either that, or he shows up in the game before Awakening takes place.

I didn't really like Anders, and I think that man is probably some sort of gov't official in Kirkwall. He looks a lot more "vaguely officious person" than "mage escapee" to me.

Also, this shot looks like it is somewhat early in the game (judging by Aveline's lack of armor), so Alistair may still be off with the Warden.

I'm not convinced it's Anders, because there's just something off about his face. The cheekbones seem to sit higher up and his cheeks appear more sunken in. Also, his hair doesn't have those loose strands on either side of his forehead. I'm not even sure his hair's in a ponytail. I can't recall seeing any side shots that could give us a definitive answer.
Still, my thoughts could be shot down "Well, they're using a different morphing system, so those in DAO or DAA who will appear in DA2 will not look exactly the same, hence the slight differences." *shrug* I've just gone ahead and dubbed the guy Gismo (Guy In Sexy Mage Outerwear) until we know his real name. Don't hit me, that was the first thing that popped into my head.
If this guy is Anders, it could be just before he's taken back to the tower for his 1-year of solitary confinement punishment (I remember seeing some templars surrounding Hawke and the crew, so this theory is plausible, if only slightly). I think that's what he said happened after his 7th escape attempt. I also read somewhere that in one of the DAA epilogues that Anders runs off with who we assume is Isabela. I've never gotten that slide and the one I do get is where he's all "kthxbai ... oh no, bad templar men ... okay, being a Warden wasn't too bad," WHOOOOOSH "so glad to be back at Vigil's Keep, I missed you so much." Guess my fem!Warden made quite the impression. He hasn't left her side yet.
Whoever this guy really is, he's definitely a cutie. I'm such a sucker for male mages who have ponytails (if that is indeed one), a love of kitties (I've got two of my own) and a slightly pervy sense of humour. If only I could travel with Meg, Nate, and Anders. That would make for some really interesting banters.
