Hello,

I just installed the Digital Deluxe edition for Mac, and it seemed to install fine, loaded up and played the long intro movie after choosing new game, and then it crashed to desk top.  I saw an error box for a split second and then nothing.  I restart the game, choose the new and it starts to go through the entire intro movie again.

I previously owned and played the PC version of the game, and apparently when I migrated my PC files over to my new Mac, it copied over my old save files, as I see my old saves.  It even shows Awakenings "enabled" although I don't have the mac version to install yet.  Also would like to have used the bonus items from my digital deluxe edition, but the code said it was "invalid" the first time, and "already used" the second time, but doesn't show it's available for download.

Any help?

UPDATE

I was able to load an old save game that transferred over from my PC saves. It seems to run fine, and now I have the bonus content.

When starting a new game, still crashes after the intro movie. But now getting an error box as follows:

Exception Raised:

Unhandled page fault on write access to 0xae000000 at address 0x1844084b

Do you wish to debug it?

Clicking on yes closes the error box and I'm back on the desk top. Relaunching the game and choosing New Game repeats the whole process.

Yargol, welcome to the Mac family. Since you can run an old save, I rule out graphic card troubles (which most often causes this kind of crash at this point). This is unusual.

You might try this:

Launch DA:O, and in the launcher screen (where you usually hit "PLAY" to launch the program itself), click "Restore defaults". This sets back your preferences. (not you custom key bindings, luckily) Then click "Play" and start a new game. If this works, you may wish to change video settings, game settings etc. as you prefer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried this and it still crashed. The EA support email response I got this morning suggests that there is something running in the background that is causing it. So I am going to try shutting down processes when I get home from work.

Could it be caused by a bad installation?

I am having the same exact problem, although I downloaded the normal version of the game, not the deluxe edition.

After pressing "New Game", and seen the intro movie, it crashes back to desktop and whining about exception rising and so on. I tried re-installing, but it didn't help at all!

I got a recently ('bout a week old) Macbook Pro, which specs are:
2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo - Processor
4 Gt 1067 MHZ DDR3 - Memory
NVIDIA GeForce 320M with 256 Mb VRAM - Graphics card

AFAIK, my specs are enough to run this game, but still cant get it work past intro movie!

E: The complete error message I am getting is; Unhandled privileged instruction at address 0x18455128. I also have tried re-installing the game (not manually tho'), and have the game patched to 1.04. Seems like I cant get it work myself so, please give me (and the OP) a hand!

Where are the files for saves and things like mods stored in Mac? I'm wondering if the issue may be with the saves/mods or content that transferred from my PC files when I migrated files. Perhaps it will work if I remove the fold files.

The file structure is basically the same with both systems:
/Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Characters/[$YOURCHARACTER]/Saves for the savegames
etcetc.../Dragon Age/packages/core/override for override mods
.../Dragon Age/packages/core/data or
.../Dragon Age/Addins for mods (.erf) installed with Modazipin (Mac) or whatever the dazip tool is called for Win
.../Dragon Age/Settings for the prefs files

Did you look up what /Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Logs/DragonAge_1.log says after the crash?

What you might try (worked with me):
backup all savegames elsewhere, remove savegames and all mods (or best: do a clean install).
Start the game BEFORE you install anything or move the savegames back(!), start a new character, save the game. So DA:O creates its own file structure.
See where the files are stored and move the old savegames to the same location.
Install the mods with Modazipin.

Basically, that's what I was thinking, Move all the old data elsewhere, reinstall and try creating a new character. Haven't used Modazipin before and not sure how to use it to install the mods. Although I'm not as concerned with the mods as the DLC, mods I can live without.

On a side note, when I loaded the old save game, I was blown away with how awesome everything looks on my iMac....WOW (and not the game, the exclamation). I'm not sure if it's just because the display is awesome, or if it's the whole computer. I have to install XP for work, so once I have that set up, I'll see about comparing.

It's the whole computer. ;-)

There is a dazip installer/manager for Windows (forgot its name) and Modazipin (which can be found somewhere among the community projects here) does the same on the Mac side. I think the DLC installation is done by DA:O itself. Since you have the Digital Deluxe version (which I have, too), these things should work out of the box. If there are any problems, there is a "sticky" thread in the PC tech forum that deals specifically with DLC troubles...

I got it working in a very odd and funny way. I was trying to manually uninstall (move the BioWare documents and such to my recycle bin), when I had them all there, I tried to delete them. It however didnt let me, as some of the files were running (?), I thought alrightie, and moved them to my desktop.

After this, I tried running DA:O, and everything worked, after intro movie, no crash, everything is working just fine. It brought a smile to my face knowing how a weird way like this actually helped.

I venture a guess that you had a crash before trying to delete the files, so some DAO process that wasn't terminated properly due to the crash was still using these files. Which is why you coudn't delete them.

Depositing the files on the desktop achieves the same thing as deleting them, since DAO cannot find them any more and creates a new folder structure inside the Documents folder.

Glad everything works now.

I got mine running as well by re-installing after moving all my old files. However, I can't get the DLC that I previously purchased to re-install, so it's all missing.

Any suggestions?

I don't remember how it went, but try this thread, especially the first post and one further down on the first page: Mac tech support FAQ

Did you look at your "downloadable content" screen in DA:O? Since you have them already authorized, they should show up on that screen. Or so I think. It's a long time ago that I installed a DLC...

If the DLC are in .dazip format, you can use Modazipin to install them... the download link is on the same FAQ I linked to.

Thanks, I'll have to check that when I get home from work. Just about to leave. I did check the downloadable content, but none of the tabs work, except it's on the installed tab and just shows the bonus content that was installed with the Mac version of the game.

Yes, I remember you must install additional content first. As I said, dazips are installed with Modazipin.

Well, on the other hand for you it's still fresh and new. Which is a good thing, too...

Ok, got everything working a couple of days ago. Here's what worked for me.

1. Moved all old PC files out of the DA:O folder to another drive.

2. Uninstalled DA:O

3. Re-installed fresh without any of the old PC version files.

4. Started a new game, it worked with no crash after intro movie

5. Copied PC files back over, but only the files fir the relevant missing content, not the whole folder

6. Copied back over the old PC settings file

After all that, I had back any missing content, plus all new stuff from Deluxe edition. Old saves load, and can start new game with out crash.

Looks great!

Hopefully someone still checks this thread, since I have a similar problem! Well, sort of -- I can get through the intro movie, but the second the game hits the Chargen, it causes my system to have a kernel panic and require a pressing of the Shiny Silver Button.
This has persisted with and without Mac patch 1.03, with both vanilla and modded installations, through numerous installations on numerous different user accounts, and even through a complete wipe of my hard drive and reinstallation of OS 10.6.6 (erase and install, NOT archive and install, and I didn't back anything up from TM or other sources -- it's clean).
The obnoxious thing is that it's a recent development. I have previously played the game successfully on this system (MBP 2.66GHz i7, 10.6.6, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD).
I, too, have the Digital Deluxe edition.

Well, my problem was apparently with something I copied over from my PC saves that caused the issue. Sounds like there is something deeper going on with yours. I'm pretty new to Macs, so not sure what may be causing the problem for you.

It's particularly annoying now because it's suggesting that I have patch 1.04. Except it still says, "LOL HAI U HAZ UPDATE."

Yeah, IDEFK what's going on with this. No one can explain it. I downloaded a fresh copy of the installer, even, and it STILL does it. It just KP'd again about five minutes ago, as a matter of fact. Going to try changing my IniVersion back to an older one and see if I can force update it properly.

Of course, the EA tech support is utterly useless. "It sounds like you have a problem with your save games. Delete everything and reinstall." And when I say I just did that, and HAVE no save games, it's like, "I understand your frustration and apologize for the inconvenience. You are having a problem with your save games, you must delete them."

Sad as it is, I may have to dump the Mac version and go over to the PC, thus having to buy the game AGAIN, since that sounds like it's a little more stable, a little less abandoned in terms of actually doing things that make the game work (and has the FULL set of DLC, thank you so much BioWare for omitting a few things).

What do you do when it asks you to update?

Did you look up what /Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Logs/DragonAge_1.log says after the crash? (usually not helpful, but you never know...)

Basically, this is, IMO, a graphic card rendering problem, since the intro movie is prerecorded and the game crashes when switching to the 3D engine.

I think I remember this problem a way back (July or August 2010) and it was an issue with 1.03 and the Snow Leopard graphic card drivers not working correctly together. Are your graphic card drivers up-to-date? The problem went away when people upgraded to the latest drivers AND to patch 1.04.

What strikes me as strange is that this was an 1.03 error. It almost looks, from what you describe, as if you are on 1.03, but your system thinks it is 1.04. Now. There is a file where this is recorded, (When you re-installed, did you delete ALL files related to DA:O? Including prefs etc?) and IIRC you can change that back to 1.03 and force an update to 1.04. Maybe someone else remembers how that went or where to find the instructions. (Might be here on this board...) It could be that your 1.04 update failed somehow and your system thinks that you are still on 1.03. Maybe you ARE still on 1.03, even if something says different. This seems to call for either another update attempt OR a clean install (of DA:O, of course, not of Snow Leopard...)

(9 minutes later...)

OK, if your graphic card driver is up to date, you might want to try the suggestions in this and the following post:

http://social.biowar...4694924#4748280

Maybe try the second suggestion ("restore defaults") first. IDK if it will work, but please tell us what happens...
