Can someone please help me try to diagnose severe crashing problems on my Alienware M11x-R2 laptop?  The frequency of crashes really makes the game more frustrating than fun and this is my last resort before I give up entirely.  I have posted my system specs, game settings, and a description of the problem below.  If anyone can help me resolve this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Game Version

    DAOrigins.exe v1.04
    DAOriginsLauncher.exe v1.01
    DAOriginsConfig.exe v1.03
    Retail or Digital: Steam

    Anti-Aliasing:  8x
    Texture Detail:  High
    Vertical Sync:  Enabled
    Frame-Buffer Effects:  Enabled

Issue Description

The game frequently crashes to the desktop with the message "Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working."  There is no further detail given about the cause of the crash.  It is not 100% reproduceable, but it does seem to occur somewhat more frequently when there is a lot of activity on the screen.  Alt-tabbing back and forth to Windows may also cause the crash, but only sometimes.

As an example, tonight I entered The Dead Trenches for the first time.  Immediately after the auto-save, I did Alt-Tab to Windows and the game crashed.  I restarted it and loaded my auto-save and the game again crashed immediately before it even loaded.  I restarted a 2nd time and entered into the initial battle and crashed midway through that battle.  I restarted a 3rd time and made it through the battle without a crash.

Sometimes I can play for hours and other times I crash within minutes.  It is really hard to predict.  If there is any more information I can provide that might help diagnose the issue, please let me know what is needed.  Thank you.

FYI, you do not have a High End video graphics card, not even a Mainline Medium one.  It is ranked in the borderline zone between business class and Mainline, so that these settings:

"   Graphics Detail:  Very High
    Anti-Aliasing:  8x
    Texture Detail:  High"

Are pretty likely to cause you trouble.  I can't tell you where to reset it to, but if you start from Medium, you probably can't go too far wrong.  Dragon Age is not using a current graphics engine, it's really pretty lenient, so a real Mainline card, such as a Radeon HD 5670 really can be set to high detail and Large Textures and what have you.

I understand that, but the game actually runs well with those settings when it is not crashing.  If my graphic settings are too high, shouldn't I see the effect in poor performance moreso than crashing to the desktop?  Nonetheless, I will try lowering the settings to see if that improves anything.  Is there any one particular option that would tend to cause crashing more than the others?

Turn off the Frame Buffer. I found that when the game was freezing for me disabling that solved the problem right up.

Well that and updating my vid drivers.

I followed all the suggestions here and the game still crashes.  I disabled the frame buffer and turned the video settings all the way down and it doesn't seem to make any difference.  I even reformatted my hard drive and re-installed Windows 7 and all my drivers from scratch, but it still made no difference.  What else can I do?

The crash log is below, although I'm not seeing any useful information there:

I'm having the same problems, none of the suggested help works. I have literally the same alienware build as the OP.

I can't believe forum staff have not stepped in here. This issue is old and well documented.

If you are running a multi-core processor of any sort,
try the suggestion in this linked thread to manually set core
affinity.
It completely solved ctd's for me and didn't affect gameplay
visual quality in any noticeable way.
Only hassle is you have to do it every time you start the game, but solving the constant ctd's is worth it:

Please re-examine the description of the forum (of all the forums on the site, for that matter), there isn't any "support" in here.  There is no one around whose official work includes "stepping in", sorry.  There are search options that the folks involved didn't choose to use; admittedly, the in-house function is just a terrible, bad joke, but either Google or Yahoo works just fine with a site: redirector included:

Don't be sorry. Not your fault.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will refrain from future criticisms of the non-existent support.

Hope my above answer helps someone.

For what it's worth, just as the descriptions of the various forums that include the word "Tech" or "Technical" in the names, including the very misleading name in here, all mention, EA handles official support on their site. Chris' pinned message is now incorrect, and in need of an edit (Raen, why don't you edit it for him? You can, can't you?) -- his links now point to DA2's Help pages at EA.

Thanks for your comments, certainly.
