So I'm having what I believe is a pretty unique problem with Throne of Bhaal.  I'm playing the 4 in 1 Baldur's Gate Collection on my computer with Windows 7.  I have had Shadows of Amn installed with Throne of Bhaal and have played through all of SoA.  The only problem arose when I beat SoA and it prompted me to insert ToB into the disc drive.  I did, and... it doesn't read it.  It acts as if there's no disc.

The weird part is that when I quit the game and tried inserting and having it start from autorun.  That didn't work... but when I quit from THAT and tried running the game from the menu, suddenly ToB works.  Only now I can't access my SoA saves to import into the expansion!  Sigh... and of course when I insert SoA to redo the ending and go right into ToB, once again... "no disc" error.

Basically I have no idea what's going on, let alone what to do.  Sorry if that sounded confusing, but it's kind of a confusing problem to be honest.  Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks a bunch.

Haven't got W7 but some thoughts...

Can you disable autoplay on the disk drive and see if that makes a difference.

Or are some bits installed/running as administrator and others not?

If you go to the save game directory in Windows explorer is there a compatibility icon/option and does that show different saved games. If so you may be able to copy them from one area to the other and see if they appear when you start TOB.

Also check the baldur.ini file in the game directory & compatibility area to check all the disk paths. On Linux the TOB cd takes an age to be recognised, don't know if it's the same on W7 and you just need to wait.

I am using Vista and I have exactly the same problem. Either the CD will be read, but no saves from SOA will show up both in SOA and TOB or the CD won't be read, but SOA saves will be available to be accessed. It's frustrating. The first case happens when I run the exe as an administrator.

After a bit of search I found the solution on another thread. Here's the link:

I'm having the exact same problem. Can't gain access to Watchers Keep in SoA as it isn't reading the ToB CD in game even when it will read it from autorun. Please help! That forum link isn't working.

Right, I've tried all kinds of things. I have ToB installed. When I run ToB as administrator, it all works fine, but the saved files aren't there. I then went looking for the save folder and found none in the BGII - SoA directory. When I run it as my user, I can access the save files, but not ToB. Well wierd. I also tried loading the game from the disc, and despite my inserting it, clicking play, then Thone of Bhaal, it says the disc isn't there. Help!

The save files in Vista or windows 7 are a bit tricky - they're either in some application or some virtual store x86 folder. To see this, you'll need to turn ON 'show hidden files and folders'. You won't any save filies in the BG2 SoA directory - you might find some in games/..../..../ or in documents/username/baldur's gate/....../

The reason the link is no longer valid is that Bioware (due to being hacked) took all their old forums down e.g. made it so that the public couldn't view (see) the old forums. Have you tried loading the game from bgmain.exe or tobmain.exe?

Thanks for answering!

So where do I turn on 'show hidden files or folders'? I hate the lay out to new Windows. '95 was the best. I have a bgmain.exe but not a tobmain.exe, even though the game is installed. I can't find any saved game files for it anywhere on my computer that seems logical. I have dungeon be gone and solaufien mods installed, but don't think that should cause this. I installed SoA, then ToB, then the patch. Its a multiplayer game, don't think that should matter.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I downloaded and burnt the discs compressed into 4 discs for all games, does that make a difference to it? (Lost my old copy of the game! Still the original ToB disc, which might be a factor?) I've also not been able to get the CLUA Console working, not sure why. I tried a few suggestions from other forums but nothing has worked so far. I thought it might have something to do with the fact that it was compressed differently, since the baldur.ini file seems different to how I remember it.

If I uninstall ToB and reinstall will this screw with my SoA? I don't want the saved games to just vanish.  Windows 7 is stupid, why did they make it more difficult for you to access your own computer?

There's a guide here which teaches you to turn ON the show hidden files and folders in Windows 7:
http://www.bleepingc...utorial151.html

I've found this also:
http://www.tomshardw...rectory-windows

A quote:

I had to enable show hidden files to see the application data folder in MyDocs area.

Wayback Machine may have preserved the dead link to the Bioware Forum:
web.archive.org/web/20080430170851/http://forums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html

I am on Windows XP myself and have never had any problems.
(One annoyance, the Paladin protagonist was turned Neutral Evil, but not in a way that ShadowKeeper could fix!)
