I just bought this game and plan on playing it as soon as my university finals are over next week. Just one question though - how long is it? Is it longer than Dragon Age, or shorter?

Since Bioware has said they'd never again make a game as large as BG2 I'd guess it is longer than DA: O.

Hmm. If I recall, it took me two weeks and six hour play sessions each day to beat Dragon Age, and even then, I still left a lot of quests unfinished and didn't get to hear a lot of the conversations.

You will find it longer than that, particularly if you want to do EVERYTHING.

It all depends on whether you play no reload or not and if you use mods. If you play no-reloads with mods as well, be prepared for a very long, but very intersting time. I must admit to addiction. My only addiction other than caffiene.

Well, I plan to save the as often as I can so that I won't keep having to play the same segments over. And, what mods are available? Any interesting ones?

Mods for BG2 are nearly as numerous as people on the planet, but here's a good place to start with respect to mods: http://social.biowar...3/index/3149243

However, as a first playthrough I would suggest using only the official patch and the G3 fixpack, which fixes hundreds of additional bugs.

You and me both!

Theoretically it's longer.

But it's not linear like all recent Bioware games, best speedruns are only hour long.

xx55xx, If you try every side quest - a good idea since it builds up experience points and gives you a stronger party - even vanilla BG2 could easily take you 100+ "game days", and figure 2 earth hours for every Toril game day. So, that's a week and a half unless you insist on wasteing time on side issues like eating, sleeping, and potty breaks Image IPB

Wow... 200 hours? I think I've spent only that much time on Rome: Total War over the course of the last several years, and that's only because of all the mods I've tried.

Try it, you'll like it! - if you enjoy role playing games. You could cut down on the side quests if you want to go faster, but that might make the end harder to win. It's complexity is one of the reasons people still play BG2 as it approaches its 11th birthday.

Many, many awesome hours of fun. Still the best, most immersive game I've ever played, hands down.

I don't think it's anywhere near that long. But it's long. Longer than DA:O, which I do in around sixty hours on average.

You're greatly overstating the amount of real-time this takes what with reasting and travel times between areas.

Don't forget the time (for an addict such as I am too), that is spend thinking about the game, planning new parties, hanging around on fora, modding the game (after enormous time spend reading about mods and planning what mods to take). Browsing through portrait sites to search the perfect portrait for your new character etc. It's at least half of the fun and takes me lots of well-spend time too!

My first playthrough of BG2/ToB took me an extremely long time... I wouldn't be surprised if I spent over two hundred hours on that run. It was pretty heart-wrenching by the time I reached the end.

To be fair, though, it look me a while to get the hang of things—the learning curve is considerably steeper than more recent games. Also, I was only twelve or thirteen the first time I played.

Nevertheless, the game is long... considerably longer than DA:O, if you're a completionist.

Heh, and when you factor all that in you easily propel time spent to exponential, nae existential, proportions.

IF you do everything, BG games are a lot longer and a lot more deep, just with less talking and quicker load times.

Not the first time you play it. You have to allow for the fact that a first time player is going to have to reload several times for many battles. Once you've played it, the real time will drop to the 100 to 150 hour range if you do all the side quests.

Hmm, 200 hours might be exaggerating for a single playthrough, but it is still quite a lot. On one of my recent playthroughs, I did damn near every sidequest possible, and it took me about 50 hours to do SoA and 15-20 for ToB. And this was after I had played the game multiple times, so I knew the shortcuts, what to do, etc... I'd estimate for a new player you could easily top 100 hours for your first playthrough.

And the awesome thing about BG2 is the amazing replay value the games have. I've probably done 8-9 full runthroughs over the last ten years (it's kind of an annual thing for me :P), which amounts to quite a bit of my life invested in this game.

A lot depends on your playstyle. If you don't look at walkthroughs, but do want to find as many quests as possible yourself then I think 200 hours is probably too low (takes a long time to talk to every person and explore fully all buildings and locations). Just buying / stealing / learning / re-learning spells would take you around 10 hours if you're into that. If you have no idea of where traps are and wish to play no or minimal reloads this cuts progress by at least 60% in many areas. I haven't played on anything but 60 frames a minute for many years, but a new player would probably want to start at 30. You might well also be determined to conquer a challenge that is really too hard for you - say main character hangs back invisible from party attacking a monster; collects valuable items on their bodies; goes home to raise them; comes back; goes home; comes back ...  This can radically slow progress, but there is a huge feeling of achievement if you can conquer an unknown, difficult obstacle without having to reload the game.

Man just reading that list gives me a wave of nostalgia- DA:O is seriously lacking in questing and story in comparison.

My brother has BG2 with ToB and SoAmn.

I never played! Always wanted to - actually gave it a try years ago, but got messed up with the controls. I'm reserving some special time for this, kinda like a project to dedicate to...

No, I've always wanted to create a party - 4 members, though there are so many cool classes... Would anyone start with a 4-member party, not even taking anyone who offers to join? COz I kinda have a pretty good and tight idea of what the part should be... But I'm all years!

If it's your first time, take the NPCs that Bioware offers. One of Baldur's Gate II's main selling points are the NPCs, and even if inner-party interaction isn't anything too special anymore nowadays, you still shouldn't miss out on it if you want to get to know the game.

If you are set on the classes you picked out, google for "level 1 NPCs mod BG2".

You can create all your own characters if you want to, but part of the enjoyment of the game comes from the character interaction, and if you create all the characters, you will miss out on that.  There is a mod that will let you alter the classes of the existing characters if you had some other classes in mind, and this will preserve all the dialogue.  If you're just a perfectionist who must play with every character having a stat of 18, then there is a cheat program that can do that for you as well.
