Hello everyone,

I just picked up ME2 (never played ME 1), and I am hoping for a suggestion on what would be a good class to start with and recommendation of difficulty.

Typically in fantasy rpgs I choose a mage/wizard and like being a ranged damage dealer, but I'm not set in stone on doing that if their are other suggestions.

So normal or veteran ?  adept, vanguard, soldier, engineer, sentinel, ?

My initial reaction is to go adept and normal, but thought I'd ask for suggestions.

Thanks!

Sentinel on normal is a good start, with tech and biotics.

Engineer with the drone is also good.

I love the soldier, but you have to get used to using AR to get the most out of the class

Soldier is generally regarded as the best class for beginners, but you should be fine if you go with Engineer or Sentinel, like Praetor remarked.

If this is your first time play as a soldier.

Oh and if you want to go for adept on normal you should be fine, but again it would be best if you picked a class that has guns to fall back on. If you really want biotics then go for Vanguard. Its a good mix of biotics and guns.

Thank you!

Engineer sounds interesting with the drones. It appeals to me from a role playing stand point as well. Maybe I'll start there on normal and see how it goes. I'll check around for some guides. If anyone else has some advice, I'd be interested.

BTW - Are there significant plot difference between playing as a male or female?

If you wish to partake in the romance this game has to offer than YES. There are big differences. If that's not something that interest you than I would have to say no there aren't any huge plot changes in regards to the gender you choose.

Maybe I should run through a little of game with a tech oriented character and then once I am more familiar with biotics then switch to something else. Hmm.... looks like I have lots of options at normal.

Soldier is good becauase it lets you learn the basic shooter & squad command aspects of the game without worrying too much about worrying about anything else.

Sentinel is good because it lets you learn basic powers use, powers combos and environmental effects without worrying about anything else.

Both are the best starter classes because they are the most straightforward to use and to survive through the game as. Most of the other class has either some sort of drawback or quirk that requires a better understanding of the game's mechanics. The vanguard, on the other hand, won't help you play the other classes any better, imho.

Best difficulties to start in are normal or veteran, imo. Even if they are relatively easy for you, they let you learn the basics at an easy pace.

Vanguard is a good starter.

You should get ME1 and play it though as your ME1 decisions affect ME2 in big ways.

Happy hunting with your new Shep.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I need to dive in and just start learning the combat/squad commands.

Urgh. If you like being a caster be an Adept or Sentinel. If you like being a brute pick Soldier or Vanguard. Range? Go Infiltrator. Want to distract people with a summon? Engineer.

Soldier may be the best class but to me it is one of the most boring.

Since it's you're first playthrough, and going to be on Veteran or Normal, play the Adept.  Have fun tossing enemies around with your biotics.  Save the good-for-1st-time-on-Harcore/Insanity classes, namely the Sentinel, Soldier, and Infiltrator, for just that.  Vanguard is my personal favorite, hardest to get the hang of but most fun in my opinion.

Play what you want to play. Yes some classes might be a bit easier etc, but end of the day if you get down 3rd person shooter basics you can clear the game on insanity without using any powers and sticking just with a SMG and pistol. So you minds well throw the powers you want to throw instead of what makes it a bit easier to learn.

Oh and from the get go I could not play on normal, it is far too easy. The difficulty scales pretty well IMO on this game, though for some classes like the adept hardcore and insanity play totally differently due to defenses. If you want to play adept you may want to start off on a higher difficulty like hardcore. I'd rather have one hard learning curve than two separate learning curves.

Yeah, play what you like as while classes are little different, they all work just fine. It's more a choise what kind of style you like to play, than what should be played. Look the descrition of classes and choose what seem to be intersting for you. Different people don't allways like same classes.

Difficulty can be changed even middle of game, so don't worry about that. Change it to what you think feels good for your gameplay.

Adept is the most like the typical "mage" with decent crowd control.

Infiltrator gets to snipe things from far away.

Both are fun.

Well, I got to play for a few hours last night. I started at normal difficulty, but I think that I may crank it up to Veteran, as I'd like a bit more challenging combat. I decided to start with an adept the first time, but I may "roll" a second character and start over as sentinel, or vanguard to see how different it is.

Thanks for all the advice. Definitely going to be a great game!

If you can, you should pick up a copy of ME1 and start as a Soldier for your first playthrough, then lay an Adept with Assault Rifle bonus for your 2nd playthrough, then either move onto ME2 or play some different classes on ME1 first.

Play whatever you want, just know that Default/Quick-start Sheppard is a soldier, and that is the most objectively straightforward way to begin your ME experience. You can always try out the options later.

Vanguard is the most fun class to play, trust me, but you have to play him vanguard style not "shoot and cover" style.

Or you could be a completionist like me and play every class at least once...

Just saying.

LOL, I wish I could say I'll have the time to play it over and over again. However, realistically I'll only get to play through 1 time and it will take me a long time. Kids take priority over playing most nights. :)

I played almost all classes in insane, and vanguard and infiltrator are the most fun classes
