I started off with an mage, mostly because the other mages the game gives you for your party lack in the crowd control optimization department.

Aura has a pretty good build, but its dependent on some Awakening spells.

You can play the game for the first time with any character you want. Mages are said to be easier, but tbh if you play for the first time you won't notice the difference anyway. I started with an (elf) dual-wielding warrior, which, according to some threads, would be plain suicide, and had absolutely no problem completing the game, even knowing nothing about "power" building or "power" gaming. Since then, I have been experimenting with many possibilities, sometimes even choosing unlikely party setups or character builds, and have managed every time.

Choose what you really like or what fits your (fictional) character. It's a role-playing game after all, not a tactics simulation. You'll learn on the way. The game is more forgiving than many people say. To quote from someone else in a completely unrelated thread:

"I know you want to build up DAO to be this tactical mastermind challenge of playing that only erudite scholars can play, but it isn't."

I just started playing Dragon Age Origins Ultimate. In my character build, I had the option to choose a voice for my character. During gameplay, my character doesn't speak, but other characters do. Is there something to toggle the character speech on? I can pick a dialog response, but my character doesn't speak. Is he supposed to?

Nope. The character's voice is only used in battle or when you tell the character to move somewhere/do something.
