So while everyone's all in a flutter about the impending BW announcement, meanwhile those following the Cerberus Daily News will have heard that a new sentient biotic insectoid species - the kirik - has been discovered on Ekram. Currently the Citadel authorities are arguing whether to 'uplift' them and "grant them rights and protections no dolphin or viyak ever had". Story starts here:

12/07/2010 - Biologists Document New Insectoid Species With Biotics

So what do you think, a potential new species for ME3? What will Cerberus do with this new find? How do ther rachni fit into the picture here? New biotic pets for Shep? :D

Who joins me in voting for uplift?

Very interesting. Wonder if they will make an appearance in the games at some point.

Overlooking the fact Kirik is similar to Kirk they sound like a potential recruit for the Reapers if there are as many of them as there is of Rachni then we’ve got the world’s biggest bug problem. I think if you killed the Queen you get the Kirik if you helped the Queen then the Kirik are your enemies. But I’m not surprised by the fact they have biotics the Feros planet had mind control so with lower lifeforms anything is possible it seems. Maybe we’ll find a bug that talks next.

The kirik and the raloi: these bad boys will appear somewhere in ME3.

The last thing I want are bugs with biotics attacking me. The raloi however... do they fly? Because if so I want one in Shepard's squad to act kinda like a UAV. Strap a machine gun to it's back too.

I have this feeling that these may be the mooks of ME3 (like the geth in ME1 or the collectors in ME2) - and we'll have to deal with enemies that buzz around in the air.

Because uplifting the Krogan turned out so well... Eh, it'll be interesting regardless if they're in ME3, but hopefully they'll be more than the new mooks now that the Collectors and the Heretic Geth are pretty much out of the picture.

Unintended consequences of NOT uplifting. I cite my source as one planet named here as Pandora. Where due to their technological phobia they are soon to be vaporized. They have no fighting chance, and most likely won't without outside interference. Now do we doom an entire species? Or invite it into the fold and deal with the consequences later. We must not condemn them before they have been given a chance.

Besides I could see heavy exploitation if they are not uplifted.

Condemn? We're just letting them follow a natural path of their own evolution. We should leave them be and see the planet and those creatures protected from outside influence.

IF we can do that. How are we to stop outside forces from bothering them? A citadel quarantine didn't seem to stop the Yahg as evidence of the shadow broker. It's only a matter of time before they have to join us. If they are not given the means to protect themselves from the hostile galaxy they could end up the next vorcha. An abused slave species to be used for nefarious reasons in the underworld.

I suspect they'll both be enslaved by the Reapers thus becoming new enemies to shoot.

Anyways, screw kirik! I want to uplift the vorcha!

Birds eat bugs. Big birds eat big bugs. Big bugs evolve biotics to protect from big birds.

'nuff said.

MOAR BUGS!  They go "squish" when you shoot them!

Seriously, they could add little green men for all I care.  They already included the asari, so the line has been crossed.

Looks like the kirik have been doing some uplifting of their own:

"We told the kirik we'd have to leave if our swarm-queen -- that is, the Citadel -- pulled us off-planet," says head researcher Dr. Andile Ndiaye. "When we started back to base, the colony lifted our groundcar right off the road because it wanted to keep talking."

12/11/2010 - Citadel Representatives to Evaluate Kiriks' Intelligence

Somehow I can't see this story ending well ...
