If you read the last book, the description of the game isn't a spoiler at all. There is convergence among plots to move Shepard back into the Alliance.

My guess it isn't a red herring. If EA outsources their web stuff to a 3rd party company and its similar to the one my husband is dealing with with the retail company he works for, then its probably their inept vendor that leaked the information. "Oh that was the production server? Ooops"

I don't think the tentative back-of-the-box description is really a spoiler. After all, most people here kind of guessed that the whole Reapers-attack-Earth-and-Shepard-has-to-Unite-the-Galaxy thing was bound to happen.  No more revealing than the back-of-the-box text for ME1 and ME2, really.

Mass Effect: "As Commander Shepard, you lead an elite squad on a heroic, action-packed adventure throughout the galaxy.  Discover the imminent danger from an ancient threat and battle the traitorous Saren and his deadly army to save civilization.  The fact of all life depends on your actions!"

Mass Effect 2: "Entire human colonies on many worlds are vanishing.  As Commander Shepard, you must assemble the galaxy's deadliest team to save mankind against impossible odds.  They call it a suicide mission.  PROVE THEM WRONG."

So yeah, you can figure out the basic plot of all three by reading the back of the box.  No reason to panic.

Ugh.. because they mean entirely different things. Earth being attacked isn't surprising - we already suspected the Reapers were going to do this for their human-reaper.  Actually "destroying Earth" though?  I'm sorry if planet destruction ala Death Star attack wasn't what I was supposed to think there - I don't see how I could have interpreted it any other way *shrugs*.

When you say something is being destroyed that can also refer to a process.  It's like telling someone who doesn't use a virus scanner yet views internet porn all day that he's destroying his computer.

Mass Effect one was so amazing and mysterious because they didnt give up all the information about it.

ME2 they showed way to much like they showed the collecters before hand. I was in no way surprised when I saw the vid of the collecters.

I was instantly reminded of the first time I saw the geth or even sovereign on Eden Prime and how the intro of the collectors failed in comparison because all the info about them had already been given up.

This is exactly why I went on media blackout after the announcement teaser for ME2. I didn't want to know anything more than what they told me in that trailer. The same will be for whatever they show at the VGAs. It'll be enough to give me a vague idea of what to expect and then I will know nothing from that point on.

As it was, I was pissed that Miranda and Thane were on the cover of the game because to me at the time that was a spoiler.
