Really, when you think about it, this doesn't come as much of a surprise. I think we all knew that Earth would eventually be in danger.
Of course Earth would eventually be in danger, as well as EVERY OTHER major planet in the galaxy. So the problem isn't about Earth being in danger, the problem is why is Earth the main focus?

Shepard is human, the reapers are after shepard who is human, obviously they will target humans since they already were, so it makes even more sense that earth would be the focus of mass effect 3, and also your a human, the one behind the controller and to add some more this isnt dragon age where you play as different races, so if you dont like it, cry me a river, I think bioware has done a AWESOME job leaving earth for last, I cant really wait.
But essentially Bioware has turned the Mass Effect trilogy from being a game based on galactic struggles and extinction cycles to just another Space Marine game in which you must save Earth from galactic invaders. Haven't we done this dozens of dozens of times before in videogames? So is this the Bioware version of Halo's "Finish the Fight"?

ME 3 better not force a humanist attitude on my character.
Too late, it already started in ME2....

Did you guys play Mass Effect 2? Notice that whole "they're kidnapping humans" and "building a giant mechanical human" thing? Maybe listen to Harbinger's one-liner summaries of every species?
If you didn't see this coming - or at least aren't surprised - you simply haven't been paying attention.
The point is, why does ME3 have to have an Earth focus? Hell, why did it have to turn into a human focus in ME3? Yeah, I know, it is because the humans killed Soverign in ME1 so now the Reapers want to take out humanity. While that is all dandy, it is also so genric especially coming from a developer such as Bioware which has been known for unique stories.
Bioware could have built a plot that featured all of the races being threats to the Reapers in various ways. It was already highlighted in ME1 how the Turians have the fleet, th Asari have the diplomacy, the Salarians have the intelligence, and the Humans has the quick wit.
Instead of ME2 being about human colonies vanishing, it could have been about Human, Asari, Turian, and Salarian colonies vanishing as the Reapers views these races as the main threats as they all pose unique assets that the others do not (like Turians having the intelligence and Asari having the fleet). And by destroying these races, it would make the rest of the extinction easier as the Drell, Bartarians, Krogan etc....would be naked without the council races.
The council races were established in ME1 as well as their history and why they're council races in the first place. Bioware could have extended this in ME2 and with ME3, focus the game around having all of the four major council homeworlds Sur’Kesh (Salarians), Thessia (Asari), Palaven (Turians), and finally Earth (Humans) being destroyed by the Reapers. The game could have centered around those 4 planets as you must travel to each planet (in no particular order) and liberate them from the Reapers with the final battle taking place somewhere beyond the galaxy's horizon out in dark space.
THAT would be much more of an epic game on galactic scale. The type of game I have imagined ME3 to be before ME1 came out. That way the game isn't about Humans or any other particular race, but about the galaxy as a whole and how it came together to thwart off the biggest threat the galaxy has ever scene. But by making the focus on humans and Earth, that epicness is lost and is just another "Aliens attacking Earth!" videogame. Hell, why not have the plot twist being that the Reapers are actually originally from Mars so that way the class "Martians attacking Earth" genric storyline more complete.
