I still don't understand why people are judging the entire game based off of the combat aspect. Sure, the animations are different, but the best things about Dragon Age are the RPG elements, such as decision-making and reactivity. To tell the truth, if I saw a trailer showing the gameplay of Dragon Age: Origins, I wouldn't be too impressed. The combat is alright (sometimes even fun), but it isn't the greatest.

People have different opinions on what constitutes both the best things about Dragon Age and what RPG elements even are.  Hence threads like this and others.

You have severely overestimated the awesomeness of working at a nuclear plant.

Shuffling around is better?  You must really hate most games with stylized combat.  No more ridiculous than KOTOR and Jade Empire.

Seems to me the the real 'hardcore fans' are story-driven fans rather than 20-ft high finishing leaps fans.

The funny thing about this is a lot of the folks I see not caring about the 20 ft high leaps (an exaggeration) are those who are just happy if the story is good and will enjoy the combat regardless. The people threatening to boycott the game etc. Are the ones overly concerned about leaping (or rather, not) and what have you.

If only it were possible to be both.

sadly it is not. If Bioware developed its fan base off of 20ft high jumps and teleport attacks maybe.. but thier roots lie in D&D

I'd go with "overstylised". It looks a lot like the animatic, funnily.

Eh, its over the top to the extent that it reminds me of something like Kill Bill and the Crazy 88s fight scene. Now I love Kill Bill, but when I'm thinking of "dark heroic fantasy" thats not what I'm thinking of.

Yes it is.

It's easy:  You just have to honestly believe the concepts are not mutually exclusive.

Doesn't D&D have a jump skill that can be used in combat? and don't it have several spells and magical abilities letting PCs and enemies teleport ?

just sayin'

You have a new avatar.  I think I need time to adjust.

In the meantime, to the OP:  I wouldn't say "dislike" because of course most of us haven't played it, so you'll never really know until you do.  What makes me squick a little is not the mechanics I'm seeing but the aesthetics which is going in the direction of comic and over the top.  Something dies inside me (a small something, but something) when I see a mere mortal swinging a heavy, ridiculously jagged metal sword like it's made of plastic.  Rogues flipping and teleporting, same thing.

the shuffling wasnt that bad, I think alot of it is marketing to make you think it was bad to justify the new direction. I thought the speed was fine. but then again I dont like hack and slash speeds and gameplay

There is a middle ground to be had between Origins' shuffling and magically teleporting around at the speed of light  complete with speed lines. That middle ground is called Arkham Asylum. ;)

I despised it.  It was only slightly behind ridiculously slow two-handed animations on my list of "things I really hope they change about combat in DA:2."

They didn't need to justify some of these changes to me.

That's cool, I understand completely.  I thought many of the attacks could have used more speed, but it's basically an aesthetic preference one way or the other.

This is not happening.

I really hate that film.

But yes, it's the one element that I feel really jarrs with the previous experience. But I can see why they would push it overboard, in terms of perceptions, and I find I judge such things upon how comfortable with them after long periods. Maybe it'll grow on me in a way sutblety wouldn't. A concern for me, but not a biggy.

In that category system of mine? Um... I think you were a reactionary or conservative. Depends if you thought DA:2 should be as close to DA:O as possible, or incorporate more traditional RPG elements from older games.

Because a number of people thought that this would stick to the more classic RPG style of combat in Origins, and a change from that to whatever DA2 is probably going to be a big change, and even if it's good (Which in my opinion it likely will be) there are going to be people are pissed that it's less like Origins and Baldur's Gate.

It's true. My warlock can teleport attack, but only jumps 12 feet high and 40 feet across.

Reactionaries!

...the distinction is significant because these two groups are likely to be critical of the changes for different reasons, and suggest different alternatives.  Such labels are rarely entirely accurate or universally applicable though.

The much vaunted 'teleport' attack is just flicker, but that little detail seems conveniently forgotten most of the time.

The dash attack isn't a teleport.

Eh. I'm not fond of it because it just looks ugly.

I don' care about the jumping and teleporting so much (favorite game is KH2 were you do that in spades) just doesn't look right.
