What do you think of fixed companion outfits? I like them as I think they add to the personality of the character. I also understand they're less resource intensive. For example, the developers have suggested that if Sten wasn't a party member, the qunari in Origins would have had horns. Because he was, and because you could dress him as you pleased, they would have had to make a unique Sten-only version of all the helmets in game.

At the same time, why not just get rid of his ability to wear a helmet? I mean, he's a guy with horns. That seems like a logical reason to not allow the PC to give him one.

I like them.

Add personality to the companions rather than just making them wear armor with best stats.

Also hawkes armor looks bad ass

I agree with your suggested alternative. I remember in Pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies players who were trandoshan couldn't wear gloves or boots. It didn't seem like an issue at the time, as they simply received bonuses to make up for it, and I don't recall complaints about it.

As far as the general topic goes, my approach is I evaluate it on a case-by-case basis.  If I like the outfit, I'm in favor of it.  If I don't, I'm not.

It's unbelievably bad. It drastically lowers the amount of customization in the game, and in an RPG that's a very, very bad thing.

It lowers the amount of visual customization (to none).  Statistical customization is not necessarily lowered.  We don't know.

I hate fixed outfits, because they always end up not wearing realistic armor (there are exceptions), it seems that they follow the line of "Oh My Maker! These little green velvet shoes are so awesome! I'm like totally going to wear them instead of those armored boots!"

It annoys me.

I'm in favour of them, although would welcome there being a change of clothes or two for each character over the years. Some kind of visual signifier that such a large amount of time has passed.

Seeing as they have talked up the runic upgrading system I can see no real drawbacks. Origins armor styles were hardly different enough or nice enough for me to wish I could dress all my rogues in the same leather armor for example.

It would have been a deal breaker for me if they were like ME2 with zero customization, but thankfully they aren't so I don't have a problem with them.

I like the DA2 version, as long as the character feel like their own person instead of being able to force Sten to walk around in his underwear. This also allows for unique companion models / animations.

Aesthetically the only people who got any real customisation were massive plate wearers, and that was only a few sets with various colours, and they were generally ill fitting.

Shale and Dog didn't wear helmets, or regular armour, either.. but yeah I guess Sten would have been different.

I don't mind the fixed outfits, as long as there is some variety throughout the game, like with Aveline's armour change.

There wont be. The outfits stay the same, save for a few exceptions.

I'd agree with this. And fully admit it's an assumption that it will affect stats. Still, I don't like...

My last DAO playthrough I gave Morrigan the mage helmet and DLC robes.. can't remember what the names are, burt anyway, now I'm playing a female mage whjo is wearing that set, and I keep thinking 'why am I controlling Morrigan?

So yeah, I can see the advantage too.

I really, really don't like it. I like the gameplay of acquiring gear for myself and my companions, and I especially don't like it after seeing what they're wearing to start the game. On the otherhand, haven't seen any armor that I do like so it may not make a whit of difference, unless there's some good old Ferelden armor (without fur and pointy bits) kicking around.

That could have made for a funny cutscene if he/she tried.

It is one of my most hated new features.

Although looking at the two armors we've seen Aveline in at least it isn't as god awful as ME2's reskinned latex outfits.

As for the qunari thing they should of simply made it that Sten couldn't wear helmets (just like in Morrowind how khajiit and argonians could not wear shoes or closed faced helms) or simply have qunari not have horns in the sequel.

Hopefully they'll have two types of outfits, sturdy adventuring gear and their man or woman about kirkwall look.

as long as there's one or two companions wearing full massive armor it's ok. That way I can rationalize people going in underpants doing backflips and throwing fireballs as long as there are three dudes or dudettes in full plate holding the line in the heat of the combat and taking blows so the backstabbing and magic specialists do their thing without being overwhelmed and slaughtered on the first round of combat.

I'm a sword and board type of guy, there's nothing I can do about it.

I don't mind it too much. I like the idea of each character having their clothing reflect their unique persona. However, I am hoping that over the ten year period the outfits do change some. I don't know may people who walk around in the same style of clothing for ten years but maybe that's just me. Overall though, I'm not opposed to the change.

Fixed outfits in a fantasy RPG are terrible, especially the ones we've seen.

In ME2 it worked because the outfits had a lot of character and could be justified by sci fi bull**** like hardened skin weaves and built in kinetic shielding. Miranda, Thane, Kasumi and Jack were all partially defined by their distinctive outfits.

Fantasy is different. Magic aside, we recognise leather armour as being lighter but less hard-wearing than plate-mail. Mages wear robes to not muck up their spell casting. It follows physical laws which we understand. So finding a slightly better piece of armour is a big deal to a fantasy character; pimping your crew in badass plate, dragon-skin leather or blood-mage robes is just cool. Removing that takes away from the game.

Plus, here it is, the outfits we've seen are crap. Pirate chick has a white shirt, rich dwarf has basic robes with like a cape, tough girl has a sleeveless vest. Nothing there adds to the character and so all we are left with is a limitation.

I would be surprised if Carver doesn't get a new oufit at some point seeing as Aveline does. He is also a warrior wearing only his basic 'civilian' clothes (like Aveline before she gets new armor) in the screenshots we have of him.

I have a feeling Varric, Isabela, and Meg are all going to stay the same though, at least.

If they allowed for several unique outfits, that would be fine. If they had it like Morrigan in Origins where you have one unique look per character plus customizable armor, I'd like that even more.

As it is in DA2, I'm not necessarily a fan. I enjoy my visual customization just as much as the statistical.

I know people who smells like they haven't changed their clothes in thirty years.
it would be cool that at the start of a new chapter you could comment on the odor of your companions

Isabella: ready for new adventures Hawke?

[persuade] I saw a nice Orlesian dress that would suit you, Varric can get us a 10% discount
[lie] My eyes are watering because I have a cold. It's totally not related to your sweat smell, honestly
[sarcastic] Watch out with that Antivan, he totally smells ambushes
[diplomatic] A nice bath increases dexterity, a mage of the circle told me it's an old elven ritual, shall we try it?"
