From this thread.

Hmm..

They used a guy as the model for her arms, yeah. But he must be a guy with a wiry build because they don't look all hulked out or anything.

I guess I have to hunt down Anarya.

In fact, I demand more assless chaps.  It would be funny just to see Aermas have a hemorhage in the forums

I vaguely remember a Gaider quote involving ass-less chaps. Hm, can't remember what it was in reference to.

And I have no qualms with men wearing loincloths and/or having a nice breeze around their.. privates. I'm an equal opportunity gamer.

With this Dragon Age 2 system, they've created unique armors and body types for each character

I'm afraid i'm not seeing these unique body types. Hawke doesn't appear noticeably different from Carver. Or the templar guy. Or any other human male shown. The females shown so far also don't appear different, even from the regular mook NPCs. Even Aveline's supposed male arms don't look different from Ladyhawke, down to the ridiculously overdone normal maps.

If there is some actual differences there (that go beyond what the same body would like when put in different clothes with different support, padding etc) they're so small it apparently requires close scrutiny to spot. But as such the benefit is largely just theoretical.

*suddenly amused by the idea of starting a meme that confuses David Gaider with Tobias Funke*

Even if it's just one per race and gender it's a sizable step forward from one size not fitting all.

Seriously though, I can't see how DA2 is a regression of the portrayal of women in computer games. They based Aveline off of a male model for starters and it really is only Isabela who is dressed in any way that could be considered 'inappropriate' by the more prudish players, considering her background I consider her outfit very much in keeping with her personality anyway.

It is not prudish to not want to have Isabela flashing her ass-cheeks at you during her rogue flips.  If they made a male companion that was wearing nothing on his nethers but a loincloth, would that not disturb a few hetero males who just didn't care to see the junk with such regularity and at inopportune moments?

Yeah prudish isn't the right word for Isabela although it is close to it (and that includes your example). I am more saying how some people have a very low tolerance for seeing a character dressed in such a way and will react more negatively to that appearence, however Isabela dresses the way she does because it fits with her personality and is a visual representation of who she is. Those asking/wishing she would suddenly be wearing pants because they can't bear to look at her/converse with her without them just baffle me, and it's one reason I do very much like the companion outfit system (as I feel it only enhances their personality).

Okay I'm not wording my point very well, but I'll take back prudish regardless.

Your loss. ;)

Ah.
See I'd have preferred her wearing some booty shorts and a tight shirt. The flap is just there begging to be grabbed or snagged onto something. It also in my mind is just weird that someone who fights with "quickness and wit" would have loose bits hanging about. (Same with her  hair and that headscarf). [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie]

See, that doesn't seem much less sexual to me and somewhat less unique (I've seen that combo many times before). Don't fear the legs! As for the loose bits, well, just watch a Zhang Yimou film or something quick fighters are often portrayed as such for one reason or another and it certainly shows off the outfit with her speedy moves.

Frankly
I probably won't recruit her but that's more to do with the fact that  she seems to be somewhat Zevranish to me and...well I didn' like Zev. I might giveher a chance but she's not going into battle with me in that getup. And yes I understand the whole clothesbiast thing. People do judge rather harshly on appearences. I'm not going to pretend I'm too enlightened to do so.

Fair enough, although you are a crazy person for not liking Zevran! I do sympathise in regards to judging by appearence, I wasn't taken by Aveline when I first saw her but she has grown on me. Hopefully Isabela will grow on you too.

Gah Yughio? I was thinking Egyptian mythology!

Taking away player choice means you have fewer options to make the game suit you versus what suits some artist at BioWare.

I can completely sympathise with the view, but I think that's being overly fair to DA:O, very few of those choices were palatable. I'd hazard a guess that even if it were one suit per companion there would be more that I was happy with in DA2, if only because it resolves the gorilla problem.

You can't.

Haven't you read the latest memo?
Based on class and gender, there will be 2+ (So 2 minimum) sets of clothing available for each segment of the story in the game.

DAO armours are technically separate body type per race per gender per armour (class)  As such, i'm really not seeing any step forward here, but it's possible i'm misreading what you mean.

@Apollo

Less legs? Do you *know* how booty shorts look? I'm not trying to be offensive.

And there's plenty of ways to make booty shorts and a tight shirt look unique. And frankly I'd expect her to have some spikes on the bottom of her shoes.

Though yeah I'm not too enamored with her current look. It's just...urgh to me right now.

Though leave my love of Yugioh alone! Interstingly enough that's what lead to my interest in Egyptian mythology.

Alrighty.  But thus far I can only shake my head at the appearance of the companions I've seen.  For the love of the Maker I hope we can at least mod them.

Whoa, whoa. Are you serious? Do you have a reference or something?

If this is true, then it is very disappointing. I realize we only have one clothing slot, but we should at least have a crap-ton of outfits to choose from.

Yeah, and it's CRIMINAL that we don't have an NPC we can NAME any more.  We need a dog!  THEY'RE TAKING AWAY MY CHOICES.  It's a slippery slope, I tell you.

Frankly I find this entire argument silly.  There are threads on here complaining that it was ridiculous that you could make Wynne a blood mage.  More choice != worthwhile choice.  We get a lot more possible hairstyles now than we did in older games, but usually there's still only one I like.  If I'm not even that lucky, I just do what I always did before: tune it out and enjoy what there is in the game to enjoy.

I detested Zevran when I first ran across him (only NPC I ever killed instead of recruiting), but I wound up liking him better than Alistair after a while.   I thought *all* the leather armor in DA:O was murderously ugly, but I didn't refuse to use the rogue companions as a result.  (They were too much fun and too useful to leave behind all the time.)

The stuff you can customize in Bioware games fluctuates all the time because they're always fiddling with things.  In Jade Empire you could only pick between a few static character appearances even for your main character, but it was still a really awesome game with great aethetics.

Of course I do, I'm wearing some right now. B)

My point was more at the fact you can see more of Isabela's legs in her current outfit, I mean you don't get a full unobstructed view of her butt and what not, especially in fast moving combat. The main thing the outfit shows off is her legs.
