Hey, thanks for your patience in responding to these endless questions. :D But uh.. still unclear--

So, when they say, "You can also tap A with a direction for an evasive roll, which is handy when you're surrounded by enemies," they're referring to this? What you're describing sounds like a talent, like Whirlwind or such.

Whey they say that you tap A and push a direction for an evasive roll, they are playing a different game. Or, more likely, making a guess based on other games that have the kind of motion they saw. ^_^

Evade is a talent. On the PC, you would press "3" (or whatever you mapped it to) or click the icon.

about distance...how much distance can a warrior cover in a closing attack? since we don't get ranged abilities (at least as far as i know) would a closing attack be an effective measure against archers and such?

It sure would! You can close roughly as far as a rogue can evade. Warriors can get up in people's faces quite quickly in DA II, and I find charging forward with a shield to be immensely satisfying. The audio team has done a hell of a job with the THUD.

So what's the point of being an archer then, if the warriors can teleport right next to you and give you a wallop?

This has been brought up a bit as of late, so, the enemy damage on the PC or companions is not front loaded, while the attacks performed by the PC or companions are front loaded? Hence, why you'd be able to flip out of a ogre attack or an attack by a hurlock when you see their arm raised about to strike?

Image IPBImage IPBI think you're thinking of Mana Clash.  Dispel Magic simply dispelled all active magical effects on a target.  Maybe it has upgrades to work over an area now?

Ahh maybe i'm confusing the abilities now but i was thinking of the ward which would drain the mana of everyone in its area to null, and (effectively) prevented any spellcasting as long as affected characters didn't move.

Image IPBImage IPBAh, that sounds like Glyph of Neutralization.  Within its bounds, all mana is drained, and it works like an antimagic field if you're familiar with D&D at all.  Which can be rather tricky if you don't pay attention.  Alistair was fighting a mage one time and I cast Glyph of Neutralization to make the mage useless.  Unfortunately, Alistair needed healing, poultices weren't doing much, and my healing spells couldn't penetrate the barrier I put up in the first place!  But I digress.

Enemies play very much by the "old" DAO rules for the most part, from the info we got in the dev answers thread.

I'll admit, I wouldn't want to be an archer facing down Hawke. That would be a brief vocation.

Though I suspect you've assumed that all characters control the same as the party character. Not so. Not even a little.

As someone who played a lot of Ranger (archer) and Dark Templar (soldier with charge attacks) in Age of Conan this strikes me as an odd question.

They do different things for different reasons?

*Hawke charges me*
*Hawke runs into a Booby Trap, is knocked back*
*Follows up with a Pin Down snare*
*Kills Hawke with a bunch of arrows*

It's not so much front loaded, so much as large attacks, like the ogre, have deliberate telegraphing so that you can respond to them. Though the party characters are much more snappy about getting their hits in. No more 5-counts before you -finally- fire your archery special move. Man, did that ever bug me.

My mind immediately goes to MTW2 (as I've been playing it a lot lately) and archers in that game...

they are good at long range, and when the melee fighters are charging in you run and hide and hope you have melee allies to intercept the tackle...

to use a football analogy (the world is coming to an end!)...
think of the archer as the QB looking to make a pass, and he's got his team in front of him blocking the tackles trying to sack him... he's only got so long before he has to get rid of the ball.

Archers, in comparison, only have so long shooting before they are in trouble - even with some people blocking for them.

If i understand it right the NPC warriors can't do that -- they still have to shuffle around whenever they try to catch something.

That was shown pretty well in that leaked gameplay video where the player mage would kite huge bunch of darkspawn without any of them ever hitting once because they could never close enough for long enough to execute a hit.

Image IPBImage IPBIt was especially bad when you were trying to cast a healing spell on someone with a centimeter of red left.

I think its the case that, like tmp mentioned, the enemies still "shuffle" as opposed to zoom zoom dash like the controlled PC or companions. So conceivably, you'll still be able to attack enemies at a distance while they close in, its just that now your controlled characters can zoom in once they're in a given range.

How about Q being "left step" and E being "right step"  Press them faster to run!  Then once you've started running, spread them out more to lengthen your stride at a penalty to balance and agility.

I would suggest that you toggle into walk mode and play a female Hawke, and do just that. Mmmmrrrrowwwl. Her walk is a prefect blend of strong and sexy to my eyes.

Now I'm reminded of the end of Modern Warfare 2 on PC crawling towards the gun..."Right click! Left click! Right click! Left click!"

But still no whole party walk toggle? Just the PC walking with everyone playing catch up sprint/stop/sprint/stop?

Oooh oh, that reminds me. Have the companions in DA2 learnt to walk around when the player does, rather than to the run-stop thing to catch up every now and then? Image IPB

edit: kinda ninja'ed.

Not to get too off topic, but there is a flash game called QWOP, in which the Q, W, O, and P buttons control your character's left thigh, right thigh, left calf, and right calf. You have to hit them in the right order, with the right timing, to make your character run a marathon. It is awesome.

To affect my own sanity and get me back to being excited about this game (gah, how long has it been since I was excited?) I should only read Mr. Laidlaw's posts.  Most of the time they reassure me in the right ways.

And that last bit?

It took more than one button press to make it happen, but Mike pressed buttonS and something awesome happened.
:wizard:

They reassure you because he is a blood mage.  Once he gets into your mind he can make you think anything.

Toggles themselves don't necessarily involve kittens and plate glass windows, only forum requests for them - especially the ones  that don't consider the amount of work they'd involve, or dismiss it as a simple or easy thing.

That's my impression anyway.
