Toggles themselves don't necessarily involve kittens and plate glass windows, only forum requests for them - especially the ones  that don't consider the amount of work they'd involve, or dismiss it as a simple or easy thing.

There's just toggle for kitten effect in BioWare office.

That's my impression anyway.

Quick Question: In all serious do the reviewers get paid by BioWare/EA to review...I'm just wondering why there isn't critical feedback...

*trying to remember the time he read a preview for any game ever that was decisively negative*
*fails*

I mean, I'm sure they exist, but back when I used to read gaming magazines and the like - every preview was glowing, even for games that inevitably had mediocre reviews.

Well, I hardly read game reviews so I wouldn't know. I wasn't talking about decisively negative just some issues they encountered.

I understand that there's a fair amount of politics involved in that sort of thing. For example, if you give them a negative review, the publishers don't give you access to the next game, diminishing your ability to review games, which is your job. (Or in the case of previews, an advanced copy to review)

Not saying that's the case here, just that generally speaking it's in the interests of previewers (and to some extent, reviewers) to be positive.

I would suggest that you toggle into walk mode and play a female Hawke, and do just that. Mmmmrrrrowwwl. Her walk is a prefect blend of strong and sexy to my eyes.

After your comments about the - quite frankly atrocious (IMO) - UI being final and wanting to evoke the feel of an action game, I was rather put off, which is odd considering your comments usually alleviate certain concerns I have. But the return of NWN's jigglemesh™ may just be enough reason to get DA2.

I think in previews developers are given the benefit of the doubt over issues that could potentially be addressed in the final build.  When issues are glaring I've seen them brought up in the context of it being a "challenge" or "ambitious."

This may have been answered elsewhere, but:

On consoles, specifically the PS3, can you assign specific actions to each button? Or are they preset according to what class/companion you're playing?

Jeff Gerstmann? Gamespot? Kane and Lynch? Albeit that was a review, but pretty shady things were brewing there.

There are more negative previews out there (but rare like you said), but most of the time they seem to be for smaller scale games and not titles from big publishers- I'd imagine ad revenue and such may have some role in that, as cynical as that may seem.

Image IPBImage IPBI don't know about what control schemes will or won't be available, but you can map abilities to  square, triangle, and circle, with X as the attack button (regular attack).  There's another layer of moves behind that accessed by one of the trigger buttons.  Basically, it's the same as before.

The Rock, Paper, Shotgun preview from Gamescom wasn't glowing either and in retrospect they even mention the animation frames missing which seemed evident from the Dev diary.

Bad previews poison the well. Game press is beholden to developers and publishers for advertising and timely access to titles and staff.

Gerstmann went to Giantbomb (Whiskey media) after the Kane & Lynch fiasco. He's still surprisingly kind to publishers when discussing issues that irritate most gamers (Project :10bux:, DRM, etc), which is surprising given what happened. I think their 'Quick Plays' tend to be pretty forthcoming with their true opinions, but they definitely get much more diplomatic if the developers have a representative present.

So I guess playing on the PC with a 360 controller isn't going to play like the Console version (at least in terms of auto-attack)?

It's not supported, so no, it won't.

We explored it, but it became evident that doing so would present a third layer of input that we did not have time to support.

And, preemptively: no, it's not as easy as you'd think.

I don't have a controller for my PC, but I think that's unfortunate.  Understandable, of course, but unfortunate for those people who do.

Of course, next we'll be hearing from the 360 players who use a USB keyboard and mouse with their 360 wanting support as well...

Thanks Mike, a useful and interesting set of answers. Feeling a lot more comfortable with the game now. Tending strongly towards a rogue Hawke as well, backflips ftw.

Maybe because in the demo prologue there are no Rogue companions but there is a mage (Bethany) and a warrior (Aveline/Carver)?

Though the section in Kirkwall does have Varric.

If the enemy was using a big attack, like an ogre raising its hands to do an AOE ground pound, then we evaluate the damage on the "impact event." If you're not there when that event fires, you don't take damage. Easy peasy.

This has been brought up a bit as of late, so, the enemy damage on the PC or companions is not front loaded, while the attacks performed by the PC or companions are front loaded? Hence, why you'd be able to flip out of a ogre attack or an attack by a hurlock when you see their arm raised about to strike?

It's not so much front loaded, so much as large attacks, like the ogre, have deliberate telegraphing so that you can respond to them. Though the party characters are much more snappy about getting their hits in. No more 5-counts before you -finally- fire your archery special move. Man, did that ever bug me.

I found it -very- satisfying if it hit. But if it missed it made me rage <.<; Taking so long and then I get the "Miss" thing made me nearly flip my keyboard (Not strong enough for table)
