I'm playing SoU with Xanos, and although I equip him with a crossbow (and enough bolts) he keeps switching to melee attack when a fight starts (doesn't happen *always*, but very often). It's very frustrating. Is there any way to stop him doing this? Thanks

Remove all melee weapons (and shield, if applicable) from his inventory. (method applies to all hench with accessible inventory, regardless of module)

There should be an easy, but working, full list of options through the dialogue, the "tactics" one.
You're not using Tony K's AI, are you? That should solve it, as it's probably one of the reasons why I installed it in the first place. If not the inventory, I'm such a packrat...
Check my inevitable list in my signature, Tip *1. 'guess why it's N°1... :wizard:

Not to mention that guy is almost useless anyway. 'hated him. Like any henchman spellcaster. Some obvious and reassuring AI problem, even with TK's one...
If you wanna see some real and smart magic, 'better do it yourself.
Use Dorna(?) instead, or try my tip *42) Mischa Waymeet, from the same unavoidable list below, to play with that blond paladin girl as your companion.

What class do you play?

I'm contemplating a SoU run with Mischa as a companion...

Awww, jml!  He's so misunderstood... just like all half-orcs.  You just need to know how to talk to him.  Pretend you agree with his screwy ideas and he becomes docile as a lamb.  So gullible!

edit: just realized this was posted in the wrong forum so removed all potential spoiler text.... doh!:pinched:

Thanks for the replies. I was away and just came back.

Not using any mods. I want to stick with Xanos for roleplay reasons, so I'd rather not change him. I also already played Dorna before...

Playing a bard/RDD build. (RDDs are supposed to be overpowered, so that's another reason to have a weak henchman ;))

Anyway, taking away his mellee weapon did work, but that actually causes an even worse problem of him not switching to mellee when he is attacked in mellee. I want him to use ranged, but in the few cases where he actually gets attacked by enemies in mellee to switch to a dagger to avoid AoO (which was a big pain in the original campaign)...

Yes spellcasting henchmen are terrible. But like I said, I'd like to have him for roleplay reasons. Looks like I'll just keep him and treat him like a necessarily evil or a minor annoyance at worst, and a small useful extra bonus at best..

Thanks for your replies. If anyone still has any ideas, please post...

Use Tony K. Ask him to switch to melee when urgently needed.
Et voilà.

Time difference, I'll be away soon.
Merry Christmas to all!

Until when or if you find Tony K's AI under christmas tree, do what I do with confused casters... force them to use up all their buffs before entering combat.  It doesn't really matter if you cause them to rebuff over and over if it's melee you want to force. It's a low-down and dirty trick fer sure but a sorc can't cast what it doesn't have, eh?  Then furnish Xanos with a nasty greataxe (IIRC his default barb level-up pkg will include this feat) and let him hack away.  He was always an excellent tank each time I've used him in SoU and never seems to run out of raging.

If you prefer him using the xbow, that's an option but I believe his barb levels may go to Str rather than Dex. Dunno for sure though. At least raging won't help the xbow attack. A half-orc with high Cha is really an bizarre combo IMO.
