Another thing people should consider is the reason why the death toll isn't THAT high is because it's likely the Reapers are trying to harvest at least some of the human population rather than just outright exterminate them.

If extermination were there goal they could just fire their mass accelerators from space.

What was the point of ME2? Seriously. What exactly did that game do to progress the Reaper plot?

The central plot of ME2 was about revealing the motivations of the Reapers.

And about Shepard building up a kick ass team to fight off the oncoming onslaught. Very, very relevant.

Yes, the squadmates recruited only for the suicide mission that could all die and thus won't be returning in a significant way for ME3. Yes... they'll be very useful against the Reapers.

The human-reaper was the only thing in ME2 relevant to the Reaper plot. The rest was filler. It was filler that made sense and was appropriate, but filler all the same.

Well here is my theory. I believe 5 squadmates will be coming back from ME2 (if they dont die of course.) Probably, Tali, Garrus, Mordin, Legion and Miranda/Jacob. Then there will be Liara and Wrex from ME1. And lastly we will have 5 more squadmates introduced in ME3.  This will ensure that even if you killed everyone off you will still end up with 6 squadmates in ME3 (5 new + Liara) the same amount as in the original. And if you saved everyone you will get 12, just like ME2. As for those without a save file theyll probably end up with 9 0r 10 squadmates.

This is the only solution that makes sense in my mind. And with Bioware you know they arent afraid to punish people for not playing the previous games as was the case in ME2 (No Wrex, no Conrad and others).

It must be a nightmare for those scripting the game, but thats the situation they put themselves in.

So yes, I still feel the characters and story in ME2 is very relevant. it did progress the plot because we know more about the reapers intentions and how obsessed they are with Shepard. It would only make sense that they go after his home world.

They're likely attacking every nation on the planet.  Mr.Big Ben said other cities are being attacked and the world looks pretty screwed up when Shepard is looking at it.

So the 7 million deaths in the first week are in Britain and not the world population?

thats the london eye witch its amazing its still there since this is set long in the futer

You think it's amazing that is there and yet... Big Ben is there too?

Houses of Parliament were rebuilt in 1830 with stone from where I live (was shipped down to London via canals), so THAT being there is pretty damn amazing too :P

350+ years and it all comes down to some damn aliens destroying it.

DAMN YOU REAPERS! KENNETH DONNELLY IS GONNA KICK YOU IN THE DADDYBAGS!

I have mixed feelings about the trailer.

It makes sense storyline-wise. We knew there was going to be a massive Reaper invasion across the universe. We know this is part of a cycle that the Reapers have perpetuated for God knows how long. We also know that it's highly likely that the Reaper incursion would make it's way to Earth as I'm sure all other planets with sentient life on it. So no surprises there.

What has me alarmed is the focus on Earth and this first person narrative in the trailer. It leads me to believe a number of unsettling possibilities. For example it could be construed that BioWare is doing what Bungie did with the Halo franchise. That we may just see ME3 with a predominant Earth/human perspective storyline. Or, perhaps it's a set up for a future spin-off FPS that is set on Earth where you and other humans fight the Reapers. That is something I don't care for. Why weave a story with all these interesting races and worlds only to dump it all for something that mimics Halo: ODST, Halo: Reach, Quake 4, Resistance, etc?

A major reason I've enjoyed the Mass Effect story so far is the fact that it includes a number of other races besides humans, other races and other worlds. I've groomed my Shepard character to be concerned not just for humanity's survival but the survival of all sentient life. I've built relationships with non-humans, and it's been more than clear to me in ME1 & ME2 that without co-operation between the different races, without an Asari Biotic or a Krogan warrior saving Shepard's butt on multiple occasions, that Shepard and humanity wouldn't survive very long in the universe.

I dunno. It's like there are different factions in BioWare and/or with EA where some see the Mass Effect universe as being a much bigger place that humans are only a mere part of like the Turians, Salarians, Asari, etc. and this other faction that wants to run with the formula of everything being about humanity vs the alien invaders.

At any rate. I was hoping to see a trailer on ME3 with many battlefronts from the Quarian Flotilla to Omega to Illium, to the Citadel, etc. where everyone is fighting off the Reapers. Instead I got the feeling it's all about humanity's plight. The universe just got smaller.

Had similar thoughts among others.

I wouldn't worry too much about the details in the trailer - whoever made it would've been given limited info.  Watch the ME2 trailer by Blur - a lot of the details in that are wrong, which didn't matter since it did its job.

Just speculation but yeah that's probably what he means.  Also, like I said earlier I believe the Reapers are trying to harvest humanity rather than just exterminate them.

Britain is a part of the European Union--in any case, I suppose they just picked a place that wasn't New York City.

Because NYC has well over a million times filled it's quota of "attacked by aliens". BioWare probably wanted to do something unique. Someone else be the butt monkey of the world, and they picked London. Lucky guys!

Didn't they say somewhere in the game (the codex, maybe?) that Calcutta was one of the most important cities on Earth? Or was that the richest? It could mean that it could be another city we see in the game.

Very likely, I'd even go as far as say it's London only. London seems to have grown a bit with all those large skyscrapers.

That trailer made me want to cry. It really did. Yet another Earth-is-under-attack-by-aliens and another generic Caucasian male space marine...

Sadness. ._.

A bit miffed that CoD dude Sgt. Woods won the Character of the Year award instead of Ezio (ACII/ Brotherhood) but BioWare makes up for that. HELL YES ME3!!!

Looks like no more playing around for Shepard. All out to save Earth.

"Earth will be the starting point...and enough to convince the rest of the galaxy to prepare for the final war." -mark my words it will happen this way.

It makes sense....Shepard goes offf the grid for a bit after Mass Effect 2...most likely comes back nearing three or in three....is announced publicly, then Reapers jump in from dark energy portal or something...and Boom! Earth quickly attacked....time to rally galactic forces.....spend some time rallying forces...but too much time will mean Earth will be drained of life more and more. Then, you find out that there is something on Earth. Something of great importance to the Reapers. OR...there is an artifact elsehwere that can end the Reapers.....

Do you continue to pursue the artifact? OR do you gather the forces and just go?

The choice is yours, Shepard.

Since the nations are more unifed wouldn't Britain have it's own army to combat the Reapers or are invidual armies replaced for a global one.
