How is "save the galaxy/universe/timestream/country/dimension" that drastically different?

As the center of government, it has information they can use to plan their strategy - which species has the best defenses and should be attacked first, where are the most people concentrated to make a Reaper-smoothie from, stuff like that.SavesTheDay wrote...
Why would the Reapers want the Citadel? Surely they've done something about the Mass Relay by now. Other than the mass relay, I don't see why the Citadel is that important. But I might just be overlooking something.

Once again, just because a trailer/teaser is set in earth, doesn't mean that the game is entirely set in earth.
This. Anyone plotting ME3 off the teaser trailer should recall the ME2 trailer. Plotting off the ME2 trailer would involve a lot of Shepard laying dead on the surface of some random planet.

People REALLY need to stop making conclusions from teaser trailers.
It's not just based off teaser trailers.
If you see three drawings... and the first one shows a car driving near a cliff... while the second shows the car flying off the cliff... it doesn't take a very intuitive individual to surmise that the third image will be of burning wreckage at the bottom of a canyon. Not that Mass Effect is a car crash... far from it, but you see my point. There's definitely a pattern forming, here.
It's the trailer... mixed with the change in direction in ME2... contrasted with the more traditional role-playing-centered approach of the first game.

The Reapers are invading London.
What alien hero loves to thwart alien attacks on Earth?
That's right, ME3 is about to get an epic "companion".
Batman?
Alex Mason? Scorpion?
Sorry if I don't get the reference/joke.
You are not the only one who is wondering what the reference is? What alien hero is he talking about? Enquiring minds want to know.

Oh goody. The entire galaxy must prepare itself to face the reaper threat and what does BW do? They give us a tired, worn out plot. Once more, earth is attacked by aliens.
Well, at least ME1 has replayability.
Yeah right. Your going to be there at the midnight release.
And the reason the Reapers need the Citadel is because it is the Master Control for the entire relay system. Destroy it and the Relays shut down totally. If they control it, they control who can use them, IE, themselves.
It most certainly won't, actually, judging from the game's description. You'll be traversing major alien planets, I imagine. Come on Thessia! Palaven! Whoo! For the love of god, female aliens.

Well, exactly that--the Mass Relay. For millions and millions of years now, they've had one, single attack strategy: Get the Citadel, get the galaxy. The Citadel is currently out of their reach--with it, they control all of the Mass Relays, communications, the hub of galactic civilization.
They have the power to travel between stars, but the civilizations of galaxy currently rely on the Relays to travel from place to place. Without them, they'll be unable to mobilize in time to save whatever planets the Reapers strike, and without communications, they won't even know until it's far too late.
OK. I see why the Citadel is important now. Thanks for clarifying. I think that the Citadel will still be important but not as important as it was in ME1 (to gamers at least) because Shepard will not spend much time there. She didn't in ME2 and if she could convince the Counselors that Reaper threat is real, then maybe they could deal with securing the Citadel. Or maybe the Turians. Aren't they the biggest force protecting the Citadel.
Citadel.

If people didn't do that, I think Bioware would wonder if the Reapers came and replaced the forumites with Husks. It's natural form to see people jumping to the wrong conclusions after seeing only a couple of minutes worth of a trailer.LegendaryAvenger wrote...

Instead of working together to save all races, the Earthcentric tone of the trailer says Humans are the only race that's important.
Sorry, been there, played that. Bored with the plot, actually, got bored with that plot 20 years ago.

I think the biggest thing for me is if they find a valid reason for the Reapers still getting to the Milky Way. Nothing would upset me more than the first game being entirely pointless because Mac Walters decided to make it so.
Nothing keeps them from having a redundant array. Hell my tiny datacenter has N+1 failover... why wouldn't the Reapers?

I love Mass Effect to pieces, but I need to be honest. I'm extremely disappointed by what I've seen sofar. Very, and I'm actually kind of sad. Literally sad. I cannot believe that there is going to be such a focus on Earth in this final game. I know people will counter-argue that the Reapers are focusing on humanity because they perceive them as a threat (remember, we are only like bacteria to Reapers), but I was told that Reapers would darken the sky of "every world".
Maybe the Reapers were given a characterization of such power that anything would be a letdown, a testament to BioWare genius in developing characters. Because let's face it, unless you did what Martin Sheen (spoiler sidestep) wanted you to, the Reapers should be able to destroy Earth within days. Complete eradication. Any other outcome is a weak lessening of characterization, and a large letdown for a great developer who focuses on characterization. Our atomic bombs can kill more people in 15 seconds than Reapers killed in one week, and they are gods compared to us. There needs to be airtight explanations in-story.
The biggest letdown and cause of my disappointment is, as mentioned by many of my fellow fans, is the focus on Earth. Now, yes, assessing storyline, I can see an obvious focus on humanity. We are humans who discovered mass effect technology, and are discovering ourselves in a new golden age, but for the Reapers. But like many others, I have also groomed my Shepard to be seeking to make humanity an equal group among a civilization spanning the galaxy, not dominant or superior. We may be viewed as superior by the Reapers, based upon our actions, and rightfully so...I mean, yeah, we are probably the only species ever to give them fits. But the focus to Earth and humanity? It is glaring apparent. In the story of Mass Effect we players are escaping that boring blue planet we live on to explore space. We see earth every day. We work our assessing of on that planet to get by. We live and die on Earth. Earth becoming a focal point subconsciously shifts our perception of the Mass Effect IP away from the rest of the galaxy, thus consciously making the universe feel smaller and more narrow.
It looks as if I must recruit other species to help humanity. Well, since in my story I am a Citadel Council member, shouldn't I receive help automatically? Shouldn't I have at least the full force of the Turians and Salarians, crippled though they be still from Sovereign? And if I gave Cerberus Reaper technology, wouldn't their defense of Earth make any help from others sort of pointless?? Yeah, every little bit helps, but humanity's tech would far exceed, unless Cerberus hasn't had time to utilize the tech I got them. But beyond all of that, I simply do not want to recruit anymore. Mass Effect 2 was an excellent middle chapter, a fresh, action-packed...middle chapter. But I spent 90% of main-story gameplay recruiting. I now want less recruiting and more storytelling. With the initial perception among fans that we will be recruiting again, its making some of us "lukewarm".
BioWare, you are my favorite developer of games. You are excellent in every facet, and we like your games because you are innovators, you produce quality, and you know what makes a good RPG. And just so its clear, the majority of your fans despise Halo, Call of Duty and a lot of other crap holding back gaming. You are great, and im sure it sometimes feels like we are ungrateful brats. Our complaints, though, are tough love. And this is tough love. I feel that, with the way it feels Mass Effect 3 is heading for, based upon the information at hand, that this could utterly derail the entire franchise. It just has the feel of a C- ending to literally the best piece of fiction in the history of the world. And it mostly has to do with an apparent focus on humanity and decharacterization of the Reapers.
Mass Effect is my favorite game series and story ever. Up until now, it is literally The Best Piece Of Fiction Ever. It was so awesome seeing the Reapers. But I cannot get excited, as much as I want to be. As one of your die hard fans, I feel extremely, immensely disappointed.
This.

That seems like WAY too much of a cop out at this point. I can just see Satan going up to Saren and saying "dude, what were you thinking? Why didn't you just use the secondary array that nobody knew about?"RinpocheSchnozberry wrote...

Any explanation at this point would have to cost the Reapers something. Sovereign wouldn't endanger itself unnecissarily like that.

You know what else is boring? People who make huge assumptions with limited info. You know exactly sweet dick all about ME3. Stop pretending that you know what it's all about and that you're bored with it. Biggest cliche EVER. The game will come out and you'll buy it.

At any rate the trailer was neato, hopefully we'll learn more about the story faster this time than we did about ME2 when it's trailer was released. If I remember correctly we didn't see anything for months.
