What if the Earth can't be saved. What if the Earth is actually destroyed by the Reapers and the future of mankind is to become this rogue, orphan species in the Universe... and the future of the Mass Effect story becomes our quest to establish a new society and a sense of belonging, as we try to find the respect of the other alien races in the galaxy...

So, I haven't exactly read all the pages in this threat, but has anyone actually brought up the possibility that you'll be playing the guy in the trailer, a resistance soldier on earth?  At least in the beginning of the game.

I'm just saying, because they created the possibility of Sheppard dying in 2 and still being able to continue that story in 3.

While true, I didn't know you were using a value of "stopped" that meant "inconvenienced". Earth is out near one of the arms, and thus a "closer" target than many other worlds.
Addendum: When did three become "the entirety of the Reaper fleet"? Or did I just not see like a thousand Reapers in the background of that video?
And we did stop them from seizing control of the Mass Relay Network, along with all the government data kept by the various Embassies and other offices aboard the Citadel itself, and thus completely crippling our ability to coordinate a defense.

We've dodged the bullet, but they still mean to beat us to death with the gun.

To be clear, my post was sarcastic in intent -- in other words, saving the Citadel didn't stop the Reaper fleet, it just evidently slowed it down for a few years.

If we see three Reapers in that trailer, then there are likely more in the rest of the London area, which is HUGE, and more in the other cities under attack.

The last words of ME2 were "we will find another away." The destruction of sovereign and the CB just postponed it. The invasion is inevitable. It's repeated several times in both games.

Remember Mordin's favourite nephew speech? That's why Earth makes thematic sense for the final battle. It makes it personal - it brings the epic scale of a galactic extinction to a personal level. Or at least it does for me. Or maybe that is just because I'm from London!

Also - why have the Reaper's been downgraded (as another poster said)?? It's been made very clear that the Reaper's HARVEST their victims. Earth is not Alderan and the Reaper's are not the Death Star, They have a purpose, they Harvest. Vigil talked of the long process - Indoctrination, the indoctrinated being taken in by other colonies... I know it was the whole galaxy, but it took centuries. This has all been made clear in the canon storylines of two games as well as the books. I don't understand why people are confused and disappointed.

And this is what I'm afraid of... Earth being the last stand just makes me think of every cliched alien invasion movie ever been made.   I don't like the idea of an Independance Day style ending where it all took place in 'Merica and then we see a few fleeting cutscenes reminding us that the entire world was at stake... It might make it seem personal to some, but for others it could feel like a downgrade from Galaxy vs. the Reapers to Earth vs. the Reapers.

The Galaxy is the stage, it always has - not Earth... And while I'm sure the Galaxy will still be at stake, I'm worried that it'll no longer feel at the forefront of the mission, and that we'll be so focussed on saving Earth, and when we do save it, we'll merely get a little cutscene saying "oh and while  you were busy doing that, the rest of the galaxy was saved too"

I hope I'm wrong, and that Earth will just be the start, and not what the whole game is about.

It's aweasome how people, after a single trailer (a teaser no less) jump to conclusions as if they just read the game's prima guide. Earth (according to me, myself and I) is just a starting point, the first attack. If you put all the pieces together, you can tell that the it's just the first week of the Reaper's invasion on the galaxy.

Earth is, in other words, Eden Prime. After it, we'll play the game like the two others. Taking missions and visiting planets.

I doubt it will end with just a simple "final battle for Earth". ME is above that. The ME3 features thread says that vehicle exploration will return, so that gives hope.

Well based on this trailer the whole game is going to be set in London and will be about recruiting and saving just London <sarcasm, of course>. It's silly to worry about a game that coming out next based of a 1 plus minute trailer. All we can do is have fun and guess what the story is going to be about. It was released to get people interested and hpyed about he game. We know next to nothing about the story to fret about it. And to be honest at this point, complaining about a game that's a year away will do nothing. They aren't going to change the game at this point in the cycle. Just relax or don't buy the game. But we know most of you will buy it anyway. I'm sure Bioware appreciates your business.

At any rate, I'm stoked and can't wait to get more info on this game.

I just downloaded "earth.zip" from the video page and it seems it has French subtitles on it? I tried in Quick Time, MP, and VLC. Can anyone confirm?

(Still a cool scene, even if I didn't like the only thing it reveals about gameplay.)
