Can I post some of my thoughts after watching the video?
This thoughts aren't necessarily new topics, but they are common threads of discussion for the thread:
Fair warning: tl;dr.
Thought #1: 9 Million Dead.Big Ben's exact quote is:
"Two million dead on the first day. Another seven million by the end of the first week. Every defense annihilated. All our forces on the run... regrouping, somewhere. Reports are coming in from other major cities. It's a well coordinated attack, and so far it's been damned effective."
Point 1: We are given no specific context for this death toll. There is nothing to indicate that he is talking about a planet wide, continent wide, country wide, city wide death toll, or if he's saying that he watched that many people die from his sniper position in Big Ben.
Point 2: We are given good reason to suspect that this is not a planet wide toll. If reports are "just coming in" from "other cities," then we
know several things:
1. We do not have information from every city.
2. Communications are down, or in ****-shape, which makes sense. It's been over a week and reports are "just coming in." Taking down communications would be your first objective in an invasion.
3. A random soldier, isolated on the battlefield, is
not going to have up to date or widespread knowledge. More likely, he was briefed on the death toll in London before going out in his specific city to try and fight the reapers. Really, why would a soldier need to be briefed on the planet wide situation.
Point 3: Already pointed out: if you're up on your grammer, the context of the quote is: "Situation A: 9 million dead. Sitation B: The rest of the planet." So, the way the quote is worded, it sounds like the 9 million dead is a seperate issue from the effectiveness of the planetary assault.
Point 4: Already pointed out: The reapers want to harvest humanity (and presumably all organics). Not just wipe them out completely.
Thought #2: Why invade earth?
ME2 established that the Reapers are pretty keen on harvesting humanity. If they consider Humanity their greatest threat and their most valuable asset, it only makes sense invading earth first.
Another good point, already brought up, is the proximity of our "Local" system to the exterior edge of the galaxy:
http://www.platformn...-effect-map.jpgIt's not the closest thing to the origin of the reapers, but it seems like the target that is both closest and a high priority for attack.
Finally, in the end of ME2, The Human fleet is currently the strongest in the galaxy. The other races were still reeling from getting their asses handed to them in the end of the first game, and presumably rebuilding their forces is going to take a long time. I think it's safe to assume that Humanity is still in a position of dominance at the beginning of ME3, and if the reapers wipe out the Human race first, the rest of the galactic genocide will be relatively smooth sailing.
Thought #3: The Reapers are not smaller, calm the F' down.
Ya'll seem to forget about this thing called "perspective." Ya'll also seem to have these rosey memories of Sovereign being the size of Jupiter.
Compare the existing pictures of Soveriegn landing on Eden Prime, or fitting comfortably within the arms of the Citadel with enough extra room for frigates to fly around attacking him. ETC:
Eden Prime:http://3.bp.blogspot...- Sovereign.jpgSovereign + Geth Ships, Which you remember were not that huge, and in fact were small enough to be killed easily via the Mako or SAM turrets in ME 1.http://img301.images...nap26212fd6.jpgSovereign dwarfed by the citadel, and more comaparable in size to the Turian ships than any of the other rediculous exagerations seen on this forum:http://i.ytimg.com/v...kiiopocDA/0.jpgNOW: Look at the trailer, what do we see? We only get a quick glimpse of the Reapers---they're on screen for about
7 seconds, from 0:45 to 0:52. We also ge this glimpse as part of a massive panoramic sweep of all of London. This is a masssive camera pan, take for a minute and think about the scale of *everything* in the shot. Then consider that we never get a good look at the reapers. In 7 seconds we see 4 reapers in the midst of this rapid and incredibly deep camera pan.
http://fc06.devianta...szi-d34syoj.pngThe reaper furthest back is some miles away, on the horizon of the shot, and therefore appears small: It looks exactly the same size Sovereign looked on Eden Prime when you saw it from far away... If anything, it looks bigger than soveriegn since it seems to be a similar size from a greater distance. The distance here is greater than 10 miles, IMO.
The next closest Reaper is still far away. It is across the river from Big Ben, which a quick trip to google maps will tell you is a distance between 1.2~1.7 miles, depending one exactly where that bad boy is on the other bank. At this distance, still a rather large distance, the panorama contains all of Big Ben, but just the "tentacles" of the closer reaper ship. Obviously this reaper is massive in scale.
Finally, the closest reaper drops a tentacle right next to Big Ben. This Tentacle alone completely dwarfs big ben:
http://fc06.devianta...szi-d34szls.pngIn fact, this tip of the tentacle is bigger than the entire clock tower, roughly double the height. Lets do some math, shall we? The tower is 316 feet tall, acording to Wikipedia. So if we assume that a tentacle tip is 632 feet long, and we look at the earlier picture of Sovereign that I posted next to the geth ships, where the entire length of sovereign is about 16 or 17 tentacle tips, then we could estimate the last reaper in the trailer to be about 10,112~11,744 feet long. This gives a total reaper length of 2 miles, the exact same size of the derelict reaper from ME2.
http://masseffect.wi...Derelict_ReaperIn short, the reapers are the correct size.
Thought #4: That is definitely Jason Stathom.
And I hope he is a squad mate.
