I'm not really going to think too much about it until they actually start talking about the game, but eh, this trailer is kind of meh. Then again, that probably has to do with the fact that Reapers attacking, even if it's Earth, isn't exactly some "OMFG REALLY?" moment.

I'm more interested in hearing about squadmates and what we'll actually be doing.

Btw.: Did you notice that they used the Mass Effect 1 soundtrack at the end of the trailer?  ;)

Out early next year? Is that right?

I'd say X-mas 2011 or early 2012.

It says Q1 2011 at game trailers. Thats early next year.

Says "holiday 2011" on the trailer itself.  Therefore, this time next year.

From ME1 to ME2 was 2 years.
From ME2 to ME3 is 1.9 years plus the developers said they working on it before the release of ME2 would put it about 2 years. Minus the need for a major overhaul of the graphic system and already knowing how the story will play out, will also decrease the developing time. I trust Bioware, they don't usually rush out games.

Alright, having Reapers marching around London "War of the Worlds" style is awesome.

What would be neat is if there were sections in the game after Shepard completes major missions where we play as British Guy going through the ruins of the city, seeing what the Reapers are doing first hand could really make them more Sovereign scary instead of Harbinger annoying.

I hope the Reapers are doing more than just attacking Earth. Why not force the Galaxy into submission first? Otherwise they're just leaving themselves open to the all armies of the other races and risk they're plans for humanity being jepordized, as what is being implied by the game's description.

The Reapers are smarter than that, right?

Squadmates?  Nobody from ME1 or ME2, besides maybe Liara and certain unkillable NPC characters in the background, plus maybe that British guy in the trailer.

What we're doing?  Recruitment missions for the races of the galaxy.  Like Dragon Age Origins...

WAIT A MINUTE!!!!

ME3= Dragon Age Origins...IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEE!!!

Well based of the leaked description from the EA store, we are going to be recruiting other races around the galaxy. We will probably be visting the homeworld of other species.

I'm hoping they open the citadel relay and cause a lot of destruction and stuff...

Hell...That could explain why this game is confined to Earth (if it is), the relay network has been shut off, and Earth stands alone.  The artcturus fleets are probably days away from Earth...

I'm hoping that's just London.  Considering the Reapers are lovecraftian horrors from beyond the galaxy, I think the body count of them attacking our puny blue planet should be a little higher than a few million.

The Combine killed billions of people in just 7 hours, and I'll be damned if the Reapers can't beat that figure...

For the reapers sake you better be rightImage IPB
But  very good points Good point since before they bum rushed the galaxy made now their spreading out and earth is one on many battle front because I couldn't see the Earth surviving thousands of Reapers and two it would make the game kinda "Meh" if we weren't fighting the reapers on other planets or systems too. But man I kinda wish I didn't kill so many mercs in ME2 cause now we're going to need all the guns we can find throughout the galaxy

I believe that this attack will be at the end or close to the end and this just their first stop.

It looks awesome...

But personally I hope that either we drive the reapers off Earth 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the game and have the endgame somewhere else with more... galactic significance or somewhere new but with major significance to the Reapers...

If they use Earth as the site of the endgame then I hope its utterly destroyed/transformed into some form of unrecognisable reaper construct...

I'm sure the game will be amazing regardless!

You all seem to assume that Mass Effect should be centered around the position of humanity in the galaxy. This is just what I hate about most sci-fi's, they give you a universe full of interesting characters and races and yet they don't focus on for any reason. At first, most of the reasons that Harbinger gives for the alien races not being used instead of humans are good, but one specifically stands out: the turians.

"Too Primitive"

Really? Seriously, Bioware? Turians are "too primitive" while Humans have barely begun exploring space?

What, are you taking ideas from fanfictions?

Hopefully Bioware won't spoil half of the game through the trailers and teasers like they did with ME2.

I don't think Humans are primitive in the Mass Effect world. In fact they are the most diverse.

I think he ment it in a genetic level and not in a social level. They were not making us into reapers because were socially superior.

That is the falling body of whatever it is he shot with his rifle. It is definitely human shaped (not a collector), but it may be an alien we haven't seen, or a husk, or indoctrinated humans.

Mixed feelings about the tralier. Kind of badass, but I don't want to see ME3 all grey and washed out like much of that was (though I suppose one could say "London" as justification for that...). There are enough games as it is like that that are either Gears of War grey or dull and brown.

Much depends on how literal the trailer is: whether this is something that's really going on from the start, something near the end or what. For starters, there's the whole plot of ME1: if The Reapers can just so easily and quickly attack Earth en masse like that, then it kind of makes a complete mockery of the first part, which is why it depends purely on the context. The first teaser for ME2, after all, wasn't particularly literal and had more questions within it than answers, so I suspect this is the same. If this really is literal, the main question I want answered is: how did The Reapers get there so quickly given ME1's plot.

Finally, given how badass the Reapers have been purported to be, I didn't think Earth (or any homeworld for that matter) would seriously be able to hold it's own and stand up to them for more than a few days. If ME3 really does have this as the start of it and you're spending months traveling around the galaxy recruiting allies and saving kittens in-between, would there really be anything left to come back to?

I'm guessing that if they wanted to keep their casualties-to-reproduction ratio low, they would have relied on the cycle discovered in ME 1 to ensure that they had the element of surprise, as well as the probable decapitation of their entire government in the first attack.

They would be bound to lose at least a few, maybe a dozen, maybe more, if they just attack outright every time, and they can clearly only produce about one new Reaper per cycle. And hell, this is possibly the first time in millions of years the cycle has been disrupted. If it ain't broke...

Well, I'm going to call the guy Ben for now, since I don't know his name.

Anyhow. I couldn't say whether he's a companion--at the moment, he's on Earth and it doesn't seem like Shepard is going there until he gets the...uh...treaties, I don't know. Of course, generally BioWare announces particular companions first, as we see Legion and Morrigan before anything else. So it's not impossible that Ben is either an early or a late companion.

ETA: Also, Bethany and Varric were one of the first characters we saw for DA2, and Isabela got quite a long feature in the Destiny trailer.

So now both Halo and ME series have something in common. The last chapters of the both series are about saving Earth.
