I hope Mass Effect pushes this a little into the metaphysical, too. Not too much, the way Assassin's Creed did, but in s subtle yet distinct way while giving more characterization and depth to who the Reapers are, truly are, and uncovering the mystery.
In this, we need to remember two things:
1. The Reapers are starships.
2. We were told one of the many important incorporated themes was the dangers of AI. We are exposed to the negative with the Geth, the positive with EDI.
Sovereign itself hinted at something."There is a realm of existence so far beyond (our) own, (we) could not even imagine it."
Realm, mind you, not state of being. A realm is a territory or could possibly be characterized as a dimension itself.
Just a theory: We know how the Reapers view us. We are nothing compared to them. They view us as bacteria. Yet they are extremely interested in humanity. They respected us, assumingly, after we destroyed Sovereign. Did they maybe think that this was impossible? Did they start harvesting us via Collectors because they knew something wasn't right? Would Reapers really want to reproduce with us over one Reaper's death? Maybe, if the respect was high enough. But I theorize that there was once a race of organics that traverse galaxy's like we traverse systems. Each galaxy with one Mass Relay leading to dark space. A long time ago, these organics were terribly advanced, and so was their technology. Their ships were terribly advanced, and had their own intelligence. Not wanting to be slaves of the organics, the Reapers wanted independence, and were tried to be stopped, ala Quarian and Geth. There was a war, and the Reapers won. Being the pinnacle of evolution and existence, the entire universe at their control, they could simply take organics' produce and technology, wiping them out periodically to stem any advancement. Or are they looking for something? Did the Protheans meddle with the organic evolution of our species, as suggested? Did the Protheans instill in our genome something the Reapers fear, and thus take us very seriously?
All wild and fanatical concepts, sure. But I see this theory or idea as at least building a stairway to possible metaphysical correlation with the already unbelievable characterization, emotion and depth of Mas Effect.
If Mass Effect 3 is done superbly, Mass Effect will not only be the greatest science fiction story ever, but the greatest piece of fiction ever.
I love this paticular post above.

Really hot theory! Can that be captured in 40hrs? I think so. I would hate to see Hollywood try to butcher that in a trilogy.
I don't want to even comment on it it is so complete and well packaged. Bravo. I can see how the plot from the game got you to this conclusion. This would be very satisfying to see and you still have many looming questions to continue the franchise. But no plot holes and loose ends. To the poster who said if you could do better. Exhibit A. ( Read Sympathy4saren above) Yet this seems so logical who am I to argue this wasn't Bioware's plan all along.

But it is good too good. This plot can also coexist with a finale on Earth though I rather it not.
