Man... I wish I'd have kept up on this thread tonight. Good stuff. Lots of irony and comedy gold. A couple of things I think are relevant to any discussion on TES or FF...
Final Fantasy has changed systems so often because Squaresoft has always known that you have to keep things fresh and always try to do new things in this industry. Stagnation will crush your sales (and there is a fairly large and growing concern of Japanese developers in general about their inability to innovate, not just RPG devs).
While a lot of people didn't love Final Fantasy XIII, a TON of people liked it. Was it my favorite in the series? No, not even top 5, but I did appreciate that they tried to do something new with it.
As for The Elder Scrolls? Bethesda does create a unique sort of product, that's to be sure. My first Bethesda RPG was actually the old Terminator game, and even back then I was astounded... almost overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things you could do. I remember dieing as Reese after cops were called after I stole a hammer from a hardware store, and I remember figuring out that as the Terminator you could just hit the military base right away, steal a rocket launcher and 3 or 4 rockets, go find Connor and game over.
I digress, but my point is that one of the best things about the video game industry is how different games from different studios really have their own styles. You usually know what you are getting even before you look at vids, dev diaries, blogs or whatever. I would imagine that there is really a 0% if you really stop and think... a 0% chance that you will have sky high expectations with ME3 and buy it on day 1... then absolutely hate the game.
You should know, at least to some extent, what kind of experience you can expect with most of these AAA titles before you decide to purchase. So, to TOP or anyone else with heartfelt pleas for things to be X or Y, my free (and trite, I'll admit it) advice is to just relax and watch the process over the next year. Come Holiday 2011... you'll know in advance if you want the game.
