I'm having an EXTREMELY tough time with the combat in the game. From my perspective it seems if you dont lvl your characters for AOE effects....you'll be pretty much be DYING/LOSING on every mob encounter (BTW this is on normal difficulty). Sad to say it seems like there is a WRONG way to spec in this game.

Sorry, but I disagree. Sure, there's "easy" specs that you can take, which make the game a joke.
But everything is doable. Some tactics just require more micro on your part.
A mage with the right abilities (and someone who knows how to use them) is downright broken, it's true.
But you can survive without any healing if you know what you're doing.
Just get more practice.

There is in most games! You are more or less right though, some type of AoE will be recquired at points. Well actually you don't, it just becomes a lot harder.

Every character has AoE options during leveling. Bards, mages, Mage makes it easier, yes. I think it is possible, though, if you are thoughtful. For instance...use your team at your home base. Don't make potions on the road so much...use whomever at camp make sure you have more than enough. The only character I have specced that would die if left alone (no offensive skills...not many anyway) is Wynn. She's a dedicated healer with some AoE. Everyone else, though, gets both. But I try not to overlap skills, except that it's helpful to always have a trap-expert and a lock expert in your party. A rogue can use daggers and a bow for backup (and can be darned good at that). And can be either a bard or an assassin.
There's so many permutations and possibilities here it is endless. You just need to spend more time thinking about it before assigning points.

hmm my second mage has no area dmg spells and he can pretty much solo any encounter at this point
, Aoe is not a must at all, infact most in the high difficultys you might find your better of without most of them.

I've been playing on normal dif and auto-leveling the NPCs and I haven't noticed any supreme deficiencies in whether or not I can handle the fight. I'm going after the archdemon right now, and I've killed both of the big bosses (NPC quest, and the baddie that comes with a gong... trying to avoid saying too much) with relative ease.
Next playthrough I'm going to level the npcs by hand for some specific build ideas i've got.

How is that sad? Should I be able to kick ass with my warrior if I put all his points into magic?

I think you can spec pretty much any way if you play on easy. Except for the above example of a warrior putting everything in magic. That would be wrong on so many levels. Just don't do a jack of all trades and put only 1 point in every spell. You need to max out some trees. Other than that, most of the spells do have some value.
I know archers and shapeshifters get a bad rap, but I bet you can clean up on easy with those characters. In fact, I may try an all melee warrior party. 2 warriors, the dog, and myself as a warrior. That might be interesting. I'd have to play on easy of course.

The difficulty slider: it is your friend.

Also, a huge part is correct set up of tactics to take advantage of situations and to have characters work in concert without your input all the time.

Crowd Control is obviously an important aspect of the game, Not having any CC abilities will of course make the game very very hard. But it's pretty much impossible to not get any CC abilities with a mage, (Seriously, unless you spend all your points in Wisp you should atleast be able to get cone of cold or Walking bomb)

I'm sorry, but, archers become totally bad ass late game. Its all about getting a bow with "Rapid Aim." It is necessary to be viable. Once you have it, though, they pop out arrows like Legolas in the movie. Leliana was tearing it up with scattershot. And arrow of slaying's tooltip should be updated because it sounds identical to Critical Shot but it does WAY more damage.
I loved my team near the end before Morrigan left me. Cone of cold three mobs, stonefist one, critical shot one, and overpower one. 'Twas glorious.

One of the biggest breakthroughs I made tactically was noticing the Acid Flasks I'd looted and realising I had two characters who could use them (my Rogue and Lilliana), those tipped the balance whilst I was doing the long fight towards the end of the Warden's Tower.
I agree the game is tough at times, but there's always *something* you can do to ensure you have the right resources.

Oh yeah Leliana became a dps monster when she got a bow with rapid aim

in late game you pretty much HAVE to have some sort of AOE disabling/damage ability.
Be it the dog's aoe stun, morrigan's aoe confuse, etc. Because you will be fighting entire groups of people. If you can't some how delay their attack you are going to have a horrible time.
To go completely without out any AOE effects is possible but it really is not worth the hassel (for me).
